A Gadsden man has been charged with the rape of a 14-year-old South Carolina girl he met on MySpace.

Jared Heath Gaskey, 21, was charged Tuesday with second-degree rape and soliciting a child by computer, Gadsden police juvenile detective Sgt. Chris Haney said.

The man met the girl through MySpace, an online social networking site, about a month ago, and they had been communicating, Haney said.

They eventually exchanged phone numbers and made plans for Gaskey to drive to Greenville, S.C., to pick up the girl on Friday, Haney said.

The man picked up the girl at the middle school she attends about 3:15 p.m. Eastern time. She rode back with him to Gadsden, and they arrived about 9 p.m., Haney said.

In the meantime, the girl's mother discovered she was missing and started searching for her. She eventually discovered information on the computer that led to Gaskey, Haney said.

Gaskey received a phone call late Friday from a police detective in South Carolina, who told him the girl was 14. The officer also told Gaskey he should contact authorities in Gadsden to turn himself in.

Gaskey apparently went to the Police Department late Friday or early Saturday and it was closed, Haney said.

He then went back to his apartment, where the girl was, and they had sex, Haney said. This occurred after Gaskey was made aware of the girl's age by South Carolina detectives, Haney said.

He was taken into custody. The girl's mother drove to Gadsden to pick up the girl early Saturday, Haney said.

He knew she wasn't but 14 and still had sex with her!! He had no intention of just sending her home or taking her to authorities. Argh!!

Since when do police departments close at night? That's their busiest time.
