Steven Romero (MISSING PERSON)
Steven Romero Missing April 24th, 2008 Steven Romero has been missing since April 14th, 2008. He is 61 years old and a loved father, grandfather, brother, husband and friend. If you have any information in regards to his disappearance or if you have seen him please let us know.
Here is what we know so far:
Steven Romero went to a doctor's appointment in Albuquerque, New Mexico and left at 4:30 pm on Monday, April 14th, 2008. Little is known about what happened once he left the appointment. What we do know though is that his truck was found abandoned with two flat tires close to mile marker 35 on New Mexico Highway 117. The family had the tires examined and the tires were not damaged but were out of air.
The following is from a story in the Albuquerque Journal.
LESLIE LINTHICUM Journal Staff Writer New Mexico State Police are asking for the public's help in unraveling a mysterious missing person case.Steven Romero, 61, left his home in Magdalena on April 14 to go to Albuquerque. He told his sister, who lives in Albuquerque, that he had a doctor's appointment and would spend the night with her. He asked a neighbor to feed his dog and said he would be back the next day.
No one in his family knows which doctor he was supposed to see or whether he made the appointment, but he never showed up at his sister's house or contacted any other friends or relatives in Albuquerque. His truck was found Friday on the shoulder of N.M. 117, the highway that cuts through El Malpais National Monument south of Grants.State Police Patrolman Craig Vandiver said Monday that ranchers hauling cattle had seen the truck last Wednesday and police had been called about it Friday.Vandiver said it appeared the truck was traveling south when it stopped with two flat tires. It appeared that Romero had changed one tire but couldn't change the second one because he had only one spare.
Romero's daughter, Stephanie Hull, said the family had a mechanic look at the truck and determined that the tires were not damaged, only deflated.Vandiver said the truck was not locked and was stocked with fruit, granola bars, sodas and water and showed no sign of a break-in. A ball cap, a halffull soda and a copy of the April 14 Albuquerque Journal were on the console, Vandiver said. There were no footprints leading away from the truck, and tracking dogs from the state penitentiary spent six hours searching the area last Saturday and lost Romero's scent at the road, leading police to believe he got a ride from someone.Hull said no one in the family knows why Romero would have been headed south on that road when his business was in Albuquerque. "It's a huge mystery to us," Hull said.
Romero has a mild case of adult-onset muscular dystrophy that causes him to walk with an odd gait, Hull said, but he is in good health and has no mental problems or memory problems.Police consider Romero's disappearance to be a missing person case."There was nothing in or around the truck to indicate any struggle or anything criminal," Vandiver said.
He said, though, that police have no idea whether Romero might have come to harm after he left his truck.Romero was driving a 2003 blue extended-cab Ford Ranger with a camper shell. Police are asking anyone who saw Romero or his truck to call the State Police office in Grants at 287-4377. ROMERO: Last heard from on April 14

Magdalena man missing a week
Steven Romero was last seen on April 14
Audry Olmsted El Defensor Chieftain Managing Editor
State Police are looking for a 61-year-old Magdalena man who has not been seen since April 14, when he told family members that he was going to Albuquerque.
Steven V. Romero's abandoned truck was found Friday on N.M. 117 near Mile Marker 35. The truck had two flat tires.
Magdalena Marshal Larry Cearly said he received a call from the Department of Transportation that Romero's blue Ford Ranger had been found and went to his house on Oak Street to see if he could find Romero.
The marshal said Romero's house is up for sale and he contacted his real estate agent, Mary Miles, to see if she had heard from him. She had not. He then went to talk with Romero's neighbors.
One neighbor, Paul Lucero, said he has been feeding Romero's dog in his absence.
"He said (Romero) had been gone for quite a few days and he always took his dog with him," Cearly said.
"His plan was to go to Albuquerque on Monday (April 14) to see his sister," the marshal said.
Romero's daughter, Stephanie Romero Hull, of Richmond, Va., said her father e-mailed his sister in Albuquerque, Mary Chavez, on April 13, that he was going to Albuquerque on April 14. He e-mailed Chavez that he had a doctor's appointment and that he had severe allergies. Hull said her father was scheduled to have a doctor's' appointment in Magdalena on April 14, but he did not show up for it.
Hull said her family has looked at her father's bank accounts and saw that he did actually go to Albuquerque on April 14, and he went to a bank there at 2 p.m.
"We have no idea what he did after that,' Hull said, "he did not contact family or friends."
According to his bank records, he ate an early breakfast at the First Street Café in Grants on April 15. Hull said they do not know where her father spent the night between April 14 and April 15. She added that his records show he got gas at a Chevron gas station in Socorro before going to Albuquerque on April 14. He also got gas at a Shell Oil gas station in Grants on the same day.
Romero's truck was first discovered by ranchers on the highway on April 16.
Cearly acquired a key to gain entry into Romero's home, but was unable to find any information to indicate his whereabouts, according to a police report. There was no sign of a struggle at Romero's home.
According to an Albuquerque Journal article, Romero's truck was not locked when it was found on the highway. It was stocked with fruit, granola bars, sodas and water. There was no sign of a break-in. It appeared as though Romero was driving south when he got the flat tires, according to State Police Patrolman Craig Vandiver.
No footprints were found leading away from the truck, the Journal article reported. Tracking dogs from the state penitentiary spent six hours searching the area over the weekend, but lost Romero's scent at the road, leading police to believe he got a ride from someone.
Cearly said they even took out Romero's dog to see if it could pick up a scent, with no luck.
Hull said her family believes Romero might be in El Malpais National Monument, which is near where his vehicle was found.
Hull said she would like anyone who saw Romero or talked with him to contact police.
"Someone saw him at the café. Someone saw him at the gas stations," she said. "I would like any information at all to help find him.
Romero has a mild case of adult-onset muscular dystrophy that causes him to walk with a with an odd gait, Hull said.
Police are asking anyone who saw Romero or his truck to call the State Police Office in Grants at 505-287-4377.
Cearly said Romero is about 6 feet tall and weighs 175 pounds. He has gray hair, a gray beard and brown eyes. Cearly said it is possible that Romero had shaved his beard.
Hull said her father normally wears jeans and T-shirts or long-sleeved sweatshirts. He also wears glasses and normally wears some sort of hat. He always has a blue backpack with him.

Search continues for missing man
Thursday, May 1, 2008 6:48 PM MDT
GRANTS - Steven Romero, 61, of Magdalena, has still not been found.
According to officials with the New Mexico State Police, family members notified their office of his disappearance on April 18.
“We of course can't discount that my dad got into someone's vehicle. We have found no trace of him. He has literally vanished,” said Stefany Romero Hall, his daughter.
Romero is described as being six feet tall and weighs 175 pounds. He has gray hair, a gray beard and brown eyes.
Romero's vehicle was located about 20 miles south of Grants on State Road 117. The vehicle had a flat tire. “It was very apparent to us that Romero started to change the tire but did not finish,” said Captain Dominic Pargas of the NMSP.
Since finding the vehicle, officers have conducted a search with a human tracking dog. The dog was not able to pick up Romero's scent. A roadblock had been set up at one point to question motorists. Officers have also conducted a search of the area using a helicopter but that search was unsuccessful. The captain added that Romero's name has been entered into National Crime Information Center and officers have notified two media stations in Albuquerque about the man's disappearance.
The case remains open.
Pargas said he has attempted to hold a tele-conference with family members but that has yet to take place.
According to the family the Magdalena man has not been seen since April 15. “My dad went hiking every week without fail. He was an avid and experienced hiker and was familiar with the area,” said Stefany Romero Hull the missing man's daughter. She also said friends of her father from the Magdalena area did a search on April 22. She and a cousin also searched the following day.

John Doe body found in arroyo near La Cienega
5/7/2009
Santa Fe County Sheriff's Department investigators are trying to identify the body of a man whose identity was as elusive in life as it is in death.
A resident of Las Estrellas Road off the Interstate 25 frontage road, near The Downs at Santa Fe in the La Cienega area, found the decomposing body in an arroyo about 50 yards behind his house around 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Sheriff's investigators described the man as havinglight gray hair and a light goatee and being clad in only a T-shirt, boxer shorts and brown shoes.
But Undersheriff Robert Garcia said late Thursday he had yet to identify the body, which is so badly decomposed that it could have been there for a "couple of months."
Investigators found a plastic bracelet on the body from Christus St. Vincent Regional Medical Center, indicating the man was admitted around Jan. 16, but it identified him only as "John Doe." more at link
