Police are trying to identify a man found dead Thursday morning in the courtyard of a south Lansing apartment complex.
At 10:38 a.m., police responded to "an unknown medical call" in the 2600 block of Risdale Avenue, Lansing police Lt. Noel Garcia said.
When officers arrived, they found the man bloodied on a sidewalk in the courtyard, Garcia said. Officers did not feel a pulse.
"His body shows signs of severe trauma," Garcia said. "We are not sure yet what caused the injuries."
The death is not being called a homicide, Garcia said. An autopsy is expected to be conducted today.
Garcia said they hope to be able to identify the man through fingerprint analysis.
Several residents at the apartment complex who live near where the man was found said they knew little about the incident, hearing about it only through neighbors and news reports.
One woman said she saw a man lying facedown on the ground. Another resident said that at about 10:30 a.m. he followed others running in the direction of where the body was found.
The man, who asked not to be identified, said it initially appeared that the man had fallen, but he said when he saw blood and lumps on the man's body, it looked as though he had been attacked.
He described his neighborhood as a "war zone."
Resident Eve Sylvester, 33, said police knocked on her door at about 10:45 a.m. to see what she knew about the incident. She knew little, but she said she then looked outside and saw a gym shoe, a white shirt and blood on the ground not far from her apartment - near where the body was found.
"There wasn't a lot of trouble out here before," Sylvester said while watching her nieces, nephews and son play outside Thursday evening. "That's why we're so shocked."
