I was across the street from this motel about 3 weeks ago at 1am. My son had alternator troubles.
Across the street from the motel is a 24/7 truck stop. What appeared as a stationary cop inside. The lights were dim and it's very dark on the road. I cannot imagine walking anywhere from that motel. My first thought is a trucker only b/c that is all that's at that spot.

I am the mother of the missing teen. I pray none of you have to go the hell my family and I are enduring at this time. My child is still missing and the police are largely responsible because an office had the opportunity to pick her up yesterday after I located her but refused because he said, "I don't want to get involve because I am not familiar with the situation." The Durant Police Department has responded in the most unprofessional manner one could ever imagine. Moreover, the Holmes County Sheriff Department refuses to issue an full amber alert so that the highway patrol can get involved because "the Durant Police Department is handling the situation." The Deputy Mitchell of the Holmes Co Sheriff Depart informed me that the Highway Patrol would have to issue the amber alert. While the Highway patrol says its a county decision.

I was in the same hotel room with her. She was not prone to sneaking out. It is ironic that people can always find a way to blame the parent. My husband and I have been the best possible parents to our children. We have two girls and they both are different as are all children. We are still searching for my child without much help from police. So rather than point fingers try to find a way to help or just shut up.

So since you people have all the answer maybe you can help me find out what to do when no one seems to really be interested in a black 15-year-old girl who has been missing for over 48 hours in a town that barely registers on the map.experienced, habitual offender

To all who read the story and do not understand. The girl in question is my niece. My sister was visiting Durant to preach at a church there and while they were asleep in the hotel D'atra snuck out. Her mother was thinking she was safe in the room with her older sister. My sister is a very good mother and so is her father. They were both looking for her all day and night and without the help of authorities were the ones that finally located her this morning.

Where Is My Child?
15 yr old missing since May 4, 2008
My 15-year-old daughter has been missing since 5:15 am, Sunday, May 4, 2008. The local police department refused to file my report unitl 8pm Sunday night because they had a good feeling she would "turn up and I should be patient and wait." An official Child Missing Report was sent to all residents of Holmes county at 9:00 PM however the Police did not see the need to do a real search for missing person until Monday, May 5, 2008. My husband and I located my daughter behind an abandoned house in Durant, MS. She was with an older girl who clearly had full control over my child. Dee said that she knows she shouldn't have left but had no choice. She wanted to come with me but only if Casey permitted. Casey is an habitual offender, who's mother describes her as a predator.
Upon assessment of the situation, I called the local police department and request assistance in picking up my child. Officer Randle arrived on the scene was within 5 ft of the girls but refused to pick them up because, "I don't know anything about the situation. I just got on duty. Nobody had told me anything. Office safety is my first priority. I don't want to get involved." Casey stated that she was not going back to jail so she took off and my daughter followed her. Note: she did not run away from the park, she walked and the office refused to pursue them or drive around to block their path. When Chief Bankhead arrived on the scene, he scolded the Officer Randle for allowing the girls to get away and proceed to assist in the church. Durant PD worked diligently during that shift, but when the shift changed so did the search.
Apparently, it is not the police of the Durant PD to inform the next shift of previous incidence or in this case search efforts. I have continually called the DPD regarding status of the search and received conflicting reports. When I called this morning, the dispatcher informed me that he just came on duty at 12 midnight and was told nothing about a missing child, "as far as I know there is no missing child."
Now, for all those person who have questioned my parenting skills on the Clarion Ledger blog. Can you please tell me (1) what I have failed to do? (2) what else I need to do? (3) Who can help me find my child?

It's really disturbing to hear that one shift didn't get reports that were placed during previous shifts.
Hoping for D'atra's safe return.

The motel is out by the interstate. The actual town of Durant is a few miles down the road IIRC. VERY DARK and rural roads. It seems there are woods on both sides of the road into town. It's been a few years since I've been into the town. I cannot see this child walking to Durant.
This map shows the Motel compared to the town.

I'm very disturbed by this also but not surprised. You would have to know the background of Durant.

I can imagine and it seems I've heard things like this in other areas too. So much valuable time and chances of finding a clue or so in cases of missing persons is lost when people sit on their heels.

Datra's mom found her with the girl who is supposedly into drugs, the cops didn't intervene. My thoughts are she is still with this young lady. The cops should know where to find her because she has a record with them. I cannot imagine being in a situation like this. I pray Datra is safe and will call her mom.

Mr. Floyd & Minister Keys:
It is me, Doris (the ones who used 2 follow u & Floyd around singing everywhere :)) and on behalf of my family, and newly formed church family, we extend our sympathies to u all. I believe that u r definitely undergoing some trials and tribulations right now, and we are sending up prayers for you. In the meantime, my fiance is a detective in JPD and could probably offer some pertinent advice or tips, so if u're interested, email me: divinedeeva@hotmail0com and I'll respond asap.
May God's grace and mercy be with you.
Your sister in Christ,

Datra Keys was found safe.
SHE IS SAFE FINALLY!
My niece called me today to come and pick them up from where they had been hiding. Although they were hungry and dirty, they had the good sense to hide in a church of all places. Casey, who I met and appears to have been given a bad rep, is currently at the Holmes County Sheriff Department because her mother refuses to pick her up. My niece is currently in my bedroom here in Jackson on the phone.
Thank you for all your prayers and comments. We are glad to finally close this chapter so that we can allow the healing to begin.
Oh and by the way Casey is not an older woman she is a 16 year old girl with no family and no where to go. Turns out they were both running not because they didn't want to go home but because once they saw the police they thought they were going to jail.
