FROM STNG WIRE REPORTS

Police are looking for a man who abducted his two children from their Little Village home and possibly fled with them and his new girlfriend over the weekend.

Juvenal Benitez, 32, took his sons, ages 8 and 10, from their home in the 2500 block of South Homan Avenue for a custodial visit on Saturday, May 3, according to an alert issued Monday by Harrison Area detectives.

The children’s mother, who is their custodial parent, allowed Benitez, their non-custodial father, a “courtesy visitation” with the boys, but he never returned them to their home, a Harrison Area sergeant said early Tuesday.

Benitez did not have any legal visitation rights, but the mother was trying to be nice, the sergeant said.

The alert indicated he may be headed to either Ohio or Mexico with the children.

Benitez is a resident of Columbus, Ohio, but because he is Mexican, police fear he may head there with the children, according to the sergeant.

The release said Benitez "does not intend to return them [children] to their mother."

He was driving a black, four-door compact vehicle similar to a Chevrolet Cavalier, the alert said. Benitez's girlfriend and newborn infant could also be in the same vehicle.

The vehicle apparently does not have any license plates, according to the sergeant, who said that may be why an Amber Alert has not been issued for the children. A license plate number is often required to issue an alert, he said, if a description of the vehicle is not specific enough.

In order to prevent abuse of the Amber Alert system, one of the criteria for issuing an alert is that a sufficient amount of descriptive information can be provided, including information about the suspect’s vehicle, according to the U.S. Department of Justice’s Amber Alert Web page.

Benitez is described as a Hispanic male, 5-foot-5 and 140 pounds with black hair and brown eyes.

As a part of their investigation, police are in close contact with the children’s mother, the sergeant said.

Anyone with information should contact Harrison Area Special Victims Unit detectives at (312) 746-9259.

If a judge denied him visitation, there must have been a reason for it.

She let her guard down. I'm sure the boys wanted to see their father.

I hope they will be found safe.

If his car has no license plate, it should be easy for LE to spot and pull him over. Unless he steals one, then I hope it's reported stolen right away so they can have an idea which way he's going.

Yes! me too-- however, if someone stole my tag it's likely I would not notice it for some time. The only time I look at it is when I am outside working- Maybe I should start paying more attention.
