(Victor, N.Y.) -- Adam Falcon, of Victor, Ontario County, was a third-year student at St Lawrence University when he drowned in the Grasse River near the Canton, N.Y. campus in 2004.
At the time, his death was ruled an accident; but, now, two retired New York City detectives wonder if Falcon was murdered.
The detectives are investigating the deaths in rivers of 40 young men
around the country. Due to the timing of the deaths, they believe a group of serial killers may be responsible.
Good Morning, America featured this story on Monday morning. In that broadcast, the detectives said all of the victims are young, male, athletic college students with high GPAs.
They speculate that the men are separated from their friends. Most are last seen at or leaving a bar.
Falcon's blood alcohol level at autopsy was .21 percent.
Officials also believe the men's deaths are connected because, in many instances, a smiley face was found drawn near the scene. They did not say whether or not such a symbol was found in Falcon's case.
Minneapolis TV Station KSTP (http://kstp.com/article/stories/S424705.shtml?cat=1) has been reporting on the story in connection with the 2002 death of a young man from that area named Chris Jenkins.
Jenkins' death was the only one of the many deaths now officially ruled a homicide.

Coincidence or something more?

************* Autopsy update. 2nd apparently shows the same as the first (http://www.timesunion.com/AspStories/storyprint.asp?StoryID=684577).
****update****
Monday - 4/28
2nd autopsy (http://www.dailygazette.com/news/2008/apr/28/szostak0428/)on Josh Szostak is complete. No word on the results yet.
After the two former NYPD detectives appeared on Good Morning America this morning the story is starting to get picked up all over the country.
Here’s (http://www.foxnews.com/story/0,2933,352960,00.html) the Fox News report. Another report here (http://wcbstv.com/seenon/serial.drownings.murder.2.710715.html) out of NYC. This (http://a11news.com/57/smiley-face-murders/) site lays it all out in chilling detail, including this statement:
“…the smiley face gang would plant evidence such as wallets or cell phones far away from where they actually dumped their victim’s unconscious bodies in the water, local police following up on the missing person’s reports would assume the young men were accidental drowning victims instead of deliberate murders.”
It all sounds so bizarre. But so did the Manson, Son of Sam, Bundy, and Dahmer cases.
**************
From Friday - 4/26
Police have ruled Josh Szostak’s death (http://timesunion.com/AspStories/story.asp?storyID=683319&category=REGION&newsdate=4/24/2008) an “accidental’ drowning. There may be more to the story though.
While cops in Albany are shutting the door shut on Josh’s death a report is out this week that two former NYPD detectives have been investigating dozens of similar disappearances across the country.
This is chilling (http://kstp.com/article/stories/S421846.shtml).
And here (http://kstp.com/article/stories/s424705.shtml?cat=1v=1)is part 2 of KSTP’s story in which the Josh Szostak case is mentioned at the very end. This after my on-air conversation with KSTP reporter Kristi Piehl on Friday.
The two former NYPD detectives who are looking into these “accidental” drownings are also scheduled to make an appearance on Good Morning America. Also scheduled - a news conference in NYC Monday.
*****************
So far, only two other local media outlets (aside from myself and WGY) even consider the Szostak death “news” anymore. Cap news 9 did a story based on my conversation with Josh’s father Bill. Check it out here (http://capitalnews9.com/default.aspx?ArID=114867). However, the piece contains no mention at all about the investigations of other similar “drownings”.
Fox 23 also did a story. You’ll find it here (http://www.fox23news.com/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=4c017391-6d6e-4840-9964-b8cd59440f60). And they are now reporting (http://www.fox23news.com/news/local/story.aspx?content_id=0d975618-bfd4-48ef-8c8d-0fe769c9839b) that there will be a 2nd autopsy.
*****************
There may be other cases that are also strikingly similar. David Reilly (http://www.websleuths.com/forums/showthread.php?t=56647), although a bit older at 30, still has not been found.
Here (http://footprintsattheriversedge.blogspot.com/2008/04/link-between-disappearances.html), here (http://www.vanceholmes.com/court/trial_missing.html) and here (http://www.nicholasgarza.org/) are other sites on “missing” or found “drowned” college kids.
Maybe more questions need too be asked and/or answered?

Face found near possible drowning site
http://i64.photobucket.com/albums/h169/avataralley/missing/zsfjoshsouz.jpg ALBANY - In a bizarre, new twist in the case of Joshua Szostak, whose body was found in the Hudson River on April 22, a smiley face has been spotted painted on a tree at the Port of Albany.
Police believe Szostak went into the Hudson River near the port on Dec. 23.
The smiley face is similar to ones found painted across the country. In each case, the faces have appeared near where young men have drowned.
Two former New York City detectives believe it's the work of a national gang targeting young, drunken college men. They say there are 40 similar cases in 11 states.
Albany police say they do not consider the face, found Wednesday, to be credible. They maintain their case is closed.

Autopsy report(s) results
and EXCERPT
A theory is circulating that Szostak could have fallen prey to a roving crew of killers who are said to be targeting male college students around the country and leaving smiley-face graffiti at the scene.
Detective James Miller, spokesman for the Albany Police Department, said interviews with two independent witnesses have ruled out the possibility that the local graffiti was drawn by anyone connected with Szostak's death.
"We don't believe it's related to his drowning death at all," Miller said. "More than likely, it was just a cruel hoax on someone's part."
Szostak questions the reliability of one or both of the witnesses. He said he continues to collect evidence and collaborate on the case with the two New York City detectives who developed the "smiley-face killer" theory.

Sounds like they know the graffiti may have been done by locals doesn't it.

I am astounded by how many of these drowning victims were headed to a bar, last seen at one or leaving one. Smiley face killers are stalkers and bars is one of their favorite hangouts.
They are also favorite hangouts of students. This is bizarre, as someone said above, but it sounds like there is something to it. God bless the families of these young men.

Patrick McNeill's parents were on the news this morning, and they believe his death was murder. I think I understood his father to say that he was bound and tortured yet the police supposedly dispute that. Very confusing.

Thank you, Harmony. I am wondering what the autopsy shows in Patrick's case since the father and LE seem to have different opinions.

YVW, Packy!!! It is difficult to fathom such opposing perspectives on autopsy results so I, too, would like to look at autopsy results.
