Amber Alert: Baby Kidnapped from Local Hospital

ORANGE, Calif. -- An Amber alert was issued today as police searched for a woman and her 10-month-old son she allegedly kidnapped from Children's Hospital of Orange County.

Alakahi Thompson was taken from the hospital at 455 S. Main St. in Orange around 10 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

The suspect is identified as Ida Marybel Torres, a Latina who is 5 feet 4, 125 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Investigators say Torres also fled with her 5-year-old and 11-year-old children. It's believed she is driving a rental car-- a silver 2008 Chrysler Sebring, license plate 6AHA682, and may be headed for Kentucky.

The Sheriff's Department said the boy's father has legal custody of the child and Torres only has visitation rights.

The baby was being treated for pneumonia and was in need of medication, officials said.

The alleged kidnapping was not believed to be a breach of hospital security, according to investigators.

ORANGE – A statewide Amber Alert has been issued after police say a 33-year-old mother abducted her three children, including her 10-month-old son, who was hospitalized with pneumonia at Children’s Hospital of Orange, authorities say.

Shortly after 5 p.m. Wednesday, Ida Torres took her 10-month-old-son and her 5- and 11-year-old daughters while the father was in a different part of the hospital talking to staff about his son’s condition, said Orange police Sgt. Dan Adams.

The Amber Alert was issued because of the infant’s illness and his need for medication, Adams said.

"We don’t have any evidence that would lead us to believe that she may harm the kids," Adams said. "We are trying to locate her to find out why she left."

The father, Aleni Thompson, of Fountain Valley, has had primary custody of the children since December, according to a court order. Torres moved to Kentucky in January and came back Friday to visit her children, Adams said.

The boy, Alakahi Thompson, got sick and was admitted to the hospital over the weekend.

Torres is believed to be driving a silver 2008 Chrysler Sebring, California license plate 6AHA682, but it’s unclear where she might be headed. The car was rented at John Wayne Airport.

Investigators worked through the night and called her cell phone, looked up records and talked to family who may lead them to her.

Mom Who Kidnapped Hospitalized Baby Arrested

ORANGE -- An Amber alert has been cancelled for a 10 month old baby allegedly kidnapped by his mother from Children's Hospital of Orange County.

The baby has been found safe in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

Alakahi Thompson was taken from the hospital at 455 S. Main St. in Orange around 10 p.m. Wednesday, according to the Orange County Sheriff's Department.

The suspect, identified as Ida Marybel Torres, is under arrest along with her cousin. Her other two children, 5 and 11, are also safe and in police custody.

Broadcast reports indicate someone who knew Torres saw the story on television, called her on her cell phone and told her to surrender to authorities.

The baby, who was being treated for pneumonia when he was kidnapped, is being taken to a hospital for evaluation.

The Sheriff's Department said the boy's father has legal custody of the child and Torres only has visitation rights.
