JOHNSTON COUNTY (WTVD) -- Sheriff's deputies in Johnston County are scouring the area for the young boy.
The Smithfield Police Department is searching for missing child, Siraj Unir Davenport, but his mother says he answers to Raji.
Davenport is a 3-year-old Asian male, approximately 3 feet, 0 inches tall, weighing 35 pounds. He has dark brown hair and brown eyes.
He was last seen wearing light blue T-shirt with a yellow truck on the front, dark blue sweat pants and Addidas tennis shoes.
Detectives tell Eyewitness News that the boy was at the Brightleaf Flea Market with his mother around 10 a.m., when she says she turned to load her car with groceries and turned back around to find the boy gone.
Investigators say the mother and other customers searched for two hours on their own before calling police around noon.
Since then, Smithfield police, Johnston County sheriff's officials, search and rescue teams and fire officials have been scouring the area inside and outside the flea market. They have also launched several boats off a nearby ramp looking for clues along the Neuse River.
Authorities say they closed down the market early, clearing out everyone and searching each car as it left the parking lot for clues.
As for leads, police say there are few --investigators say Raji may have been abducted, but they have no information on any estranged family member or anyone else who would want to harm the boy.
Meanwhile his mother is working with police. The boys father is overseas.
If you have any information regarding this abduction, contact the Smithfield Police Department at (919) 934-2121, or call 911 or Highway Patrol.

Smithfield — An Amber Alert was issued after a 3-year-old boy went missing in a Smithfield flea market Sunday morning.
Siraj Munir Davenport walked away from his mother at about 11 a.m. at the flea market on Bright Leaf Boulevard near U.S. 301 South, the Smithfield Police Department reported.
The boy’s mother and her friends tried to find him first, but called authorities when they couldn’t locate him. Smithfield police searched for the child for about 30 minutes before deciding that the time lapse between the disappearance and the time it was reported was too long and more help was needed.
The police department contacted Johnston County Sheriff’s Office and the search area was enlarged, said Sgt. R.L. Capps with the Smithfield Police Department. Search teams were looking for the child throughout the day.
The boy has dark brown hair and brown eyes, is about 3 feet tall, and weighs 35 pounds.
Those with information on the child’s whereabouts are asked to call Smithfield Police Department at 934-2121 or the Johnston County Emergency Communications at 934-9411.

News 14 Carolina's Ilin Chen has more on the disappearance of a 3-year-old Smithfield boy.
The boy’s mother told police she was putting groceries away when the boy disappeared. Authorities have not said whether they think he was abducted, but they did search the nearby Neuse River and conducted a ground search for clues.
While police searched for Siraj Davenport, family and friends of the boy said they were praying for his safe return.
"It's sad, you know? And I immediately told [the boy’s mother] I'll call the church, our church, and I got the prayer chain started because I know that prayer changes things,” family friend Bridgette Olive said.
The ground search was called off because of bad weather Sunday, but they were expected to start up again Monday morning.

Missing 3-Year-Old Boy Found Safe In Smithfeld
SMITHFIELD, N.C. -- Authorities have confirmed this morning that the 3-year-old boy missing from the Brightleaf Flea Market since Sunday has been found safe.
Siraj Unir Davenport was last seen in the parking area of the flea market on Brightleaf Boulevard and Highway 301 shortly before noon. Following his disappearance, authorities quickly began searching the areas surrounding the flea market including the Neuse River.
Rescue workers Monday searched a mile of the river in each direction. They also used all-terrain vehicle and helicopters to look for the missing toddler.
A candlelight vigil also was held for the boy's family in Four Oaks Monday evening.
Authorities this morning have said very little about where they found Davenport and under what circumstances. The Smithfield Police Department will hold a news conference at 11 a.m. Tuesday.
NBC17 will bring you more details as they become available.

1. The mom LEFT the flea market to go home and get a translator. So there was a 2 hour delay.
2. The boy is described as exceedingly obedient, and his teacher believes he is obedient enough that he could have gone with someone who told him to.
3. The father is travelling abroad at this time.
4. The mom’s name has been released.
________________
“The boy was last seen by his mother, Rosnah Thomason, some time after 10 a.m., but searchers lost critical hours when the mother, who does not speak English, drove home to get someone to translate for her after searching the grounds herself.
The boy’s mother and translator then went to the management at the flea market, who called the police. “There was about a two-hour delay from when the child went missing to when we were called,” Gillikin said.
The Johnston County Sheriff’s Office joined the search, offering a boat to motor down the nearby Neuse River looking for any sign of the boy. The river flanks the flea market area at the base of a steep embankment. Recent rainfall has produced a swift current, Gillikin said.
The flea market was closed early and customers’ cars were searched as they left the lot, ABC News’ Raleigh-Durham affiliate WTVD reported.
Conditions Sunday prevented authorities from conducting an aerial search, but Gillikin said that an aircraft would scour the area today for any sign of the boy. The FBI has also joined the search, he said.
Authorities will continue to sift through tips from witnesses, a time-consuming process that so far has not yielded any solid leads. “The good part is you get the calls. The bad part is that you’ve got to weed out the bad ones,” Gillikin said.
The exact location of the boy’s father is unknown, but he reportedly is travelling abroad on business. “They are still nailing down where he is,” the police spokesman said.
Susie Barbour, who identified herself as the boy’s preschool teacher, described the child as “very obedient.”
“I couldn’t imagine him wandering off,” Barbour told WTVD. “He’s a very mannerly child. If someone was to ask him to go help him do something or find something, he could have been swayed off.”

Police: 3-year-old was never missing

Smithfield, N.C. — Police say the 3-year-old reported missing from a Smithfield flea market on Sunday was never missing and that the report was a hoax.
Smithfield Police Chief Steve Gillikin said the child was not even in Smithfield over the weekend, but declined to comment further on details. He said the investigation was still ongoing.
State authorities issued an Amber Alert Sunday for Siraj Munir "Roji" Davenport after his mother reported him missing from Brightleaf Flea Market.
The Amber Alert was canceled at 12:27 a.m. Tuesday after the boy was found. Gillikin said the child was not with his mother but was safe with family members.
"The child was never at the flea market. We know that for a fact," he said.
Roji's mother, Rosnah Thomason, spent most of Monday talking with local and federal investigators. Gillikin had said the mother was not a suspect in the boy's disappearance. The boy's father reportedly was out of the country at the time.
Local, state and federal investigators searched Sunday and Monday for Roji and the Four Oaks community held a candlelight vigil for the child Monday night.

Authorities: Missing NC boy was never in danger
A 3-year-old boy whose mother reported him missing from a Smithfield flea market was never actually missing, the town's police chief said Tuesday.
Siraj Munir Davenport is currently safe and with a family member, said chief Steve Gillikin. But he offered few details Tuesday about the boy's alleged disappearance, other than to call it a hoax. He refused to elaborate during a short news conference.
"The child was never in Smithfield," Gillikin said. "The child was not abducted from the flea market. The child is safe. We know the whereabouts of the child."
Authorities issued an Amber Alert Sunday afternoon and launched a massive search for Davenport that eventually included flights of a Highway Patrol helicopter. About 200 people attended a candlelight vigil for the child Monday night in Four Oaks.
But Gillikin said Tuesday that Davenport hadn't been in the Smithfield area since the weekend, a fact he said authorities didn't learn "literally until midnight" Monday. Moments later, Smithfield police called off the search.
"This did not happen in Smithfield and it wasn't as it was originally reported," he said. "The child was never in any danger whatsoever."
The chief said investigators still are talking to the boy's mother, Rosnah Hassan Thomason of Four Oaks. He declined to say whether anyone would face criminal charges, but said state and federal prosecutors planned to meet and discuss the case.
"At this particular point, it's out of our hands locally," he said.

Questions remain in Amber Alert hoax
Siraj Munir Davenport
Posted: Jan. 1 5:33 p.m.
Updated: Jan. 1 7:21 p.m.
Smithfield, N.C. — More than seven months after an Amber Alert was issued for a Johnston County boy who was never missing, local and federal authorities continue to investigate the hoax.
A woman said 3-year-old Siraj Munir "Roji" Davenport disappeared from Brightleaf Flea Market, on U.S. Highway 301 South in Smithfield, on May 18 while she was loading groceries in her car.
Smithfield police, Johnston County deputies and the FBI searched for the boy on the ground and with the aid of a helicopter for three days before determining he hadn't been abducted and the report of his disappearance was false.
Investigators haven't said whether the woman who made the report, Rosnah Thomason, was the boy's mother.
"She say, 'I lost my boy,'" said Medel Flores, who owns a store at the flea market and was working when Thomason reported the boy missing.
Flores said the woman was reluctant to call 911.
"She say, 'No, I wait a little bit,'" she said.
A friend of the family told WRAL News the child was actually overseas at the time the report was made.
The FBI declined to comment on the case, saying it remains under investigation.
David Davenport, the boy's father, was reportedly out of the country at the time. He said Thursday the his son doesn't live with him anymore. He didn't elaborate on the boy's whereabouts.
When they determined the case was a hoax in May, investigators said the boy was safe and with family.
Davenport said he wants to tell his side of the story, but he can't because of the FBI investigation.
"There might be a point in time in the future when I can," he said.
Thomason still lives with him, he said.
People who helped search for the boy said the hoax still frustrates them.
"You sit and wonder, why would someone do something like this? Maybe she had her reasons (for having) all the people looking," said Wendy Ivey, who assisted in the ground search.

FBI: Woman lied about missing child
By Martha Quillin - STAFF WRITER
Published: Fri, Sep. 11, 2009 01:04PM
Modified Fri, Sep. 11, 2009 01:06PM
Federal investigators have charged a Four Oaks woman with filing a false report when she said in May 2008 that her son had disappeared from a Smithfield flea market.
Police discovered nearly two days into the search for 3-year-old Siraj Munir Davenport, known as "Raji" that the child had not gone missing, but was safe in another country. Now they say he wasn't even Rosnah Hassan Thomason's child, but her brother's child whom she had refused to return after a visit.
In a complaint filed by the FBI on Sept. 4, Special Agent Michael Sutton says that Thomason lied to police when she said the child had gone with her to the flea market and that he disappeared as she loaded produce into the car.
She also told police that she and Raji had spent the previous day together at a Raleigh park.
During their investigation, officers found that on the day Thomason and Raji would have been at the park, Thomason had actually flown with the child from the Raleigh-Durham International Airport to Atlanta and on to Minneapolis-St. Paul. Thomason returned the same day to RDU without Raji, the complaint says.
In a search of Thomason's home, investigators also found information printed from the internet on how to report a child missing. The printout was dated May 12, six days before Thomason's claim the child had disappeared, the complaint says.
Thomason admitted to police on May 19 that she had lied about Raji being at the flea market, but gave a series of other explanations that investigators later determined were false.

Rosnah Hassan Thomason walks to the federal courthouse in Raleigh on Sept. 11, 2009, to face charges that she lied about a boy being missing from a Smithfield flea market in May 2008. The claim prompted a statewide Amber Alert and a massive search by local, state and federal law enforcement.

Raleigh, N.C. — A Four Oaks woman who prompted a massive search and a statewide Amber Alert last year after reporting a boy missing from a Smithfield flea market appeared in court Friday to face federal charges in the incident.
Rosnah Hassan Thomason told authorities 3-year-old Siraj Munir "Roji" Davenport disappeared from Brightleaf Flea Market, on U.S. Highway 301 South in Smithfield, on May 18, 2008, while she was loading groceries in her car.
Smithfield police, Johnston County deputies and the FBI searched for the boy on the ground and in a helicopter for three days before determining he hadn't been abducted and that the report of his disappearance was false.
Thomason was charged with knowingly and willfully making materially false, fictitious or fraudulent statements to law enforcement, according to a criminal complaint filed Sept. 4 in U.S. District Court.
On Friday, she waived her right to a probable cause hearing and was released into the custody of a co-worker who lives in Spring Lake. She is prohibited from contacting the boy and must get permission from federal probation officials to go outside of Harnett and Cumberland counties.
Neither Thomason nor her attorneys would comment after the hearing.
Thomason's brother, Kamarudin Hassan, told WRAL News on Friday that he is actually the father of the boy, now 6. The boy's real name is Mohammad Haziq Hassan, his father said.
Hassan, who lives in Singapore, said he and his son visited the U.S. in September 2007, and Thomason convinced him to allow the boy to stay on with her longer. When he returned home, however, his sister cut off communication, he said, and he went for months without speaking to his son.
"I just couldn't believe she, as my very sibling, would do such a thing," Hassan said in a telephone interview. "I keep on calling her. I e-mail her. I want to speak to my son. My wife was crying and said, 'What happened to our son? How come Rosie's done this to us?'"
During that period, Thomason started calling the boy "Roji Davenport" and insisted he refer to her and her boyfriend as his mother and father, Hassan said.
Only when Hassan threatened to involve the authorities did she return the boy, he said.
The federal complaint states that Thomason and the child had tickets to fly on May 17, 2008, from Raleigh-Durham International Airport to Atlanta and then Minneapolis-St. Paul. Travel records show Thomason then returned the same day to RDU without the child.
Authorities said they found an Internet printout in Thomason’s possession explaining how to report a missing child.
Further investigation showed Thomason has a teenage son with the same first and middle names as the child she reported missing. The teen’s birthday was also the same as the child – Aug. 23.
Thomason was unable to provide proof to investigators of the boy's birth and that she was his mother. Eric Thomason, the father of the teen and Thomason’s ex-husband, confirmed to authorities that the boy was Hassan's son.
"I just don't understand why she changed my son's name, my son's birth date. What's the purpose? What does she gain from this? I don't know," Hassan said.
According to the federal complaint, Thomason admitted the day after the Amber Alert was issued that she had lied to law enforcement authorities. She claimed her brother had forced her to give him the child and that she would be able to reclaim the boy when she signed over part of her inheritance.
That same day, border crossing information determined that Hassan and the boy were on a flight that would be stopping in Japan. FBI and Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents met and interviewed Hassan in Japan and determined that his and the boy's passport information were legitimate.

Grand jury indicts suspect in hoax Amber Alert
Rosnah Hassan Thomason, Amber Alert hoax
Posted: Oct. 8 4:48 p.m.
Raleigh, N.C. — A federal grand jury decided Wednesday that the woman who initiated a fake Amber Alert in Smithfield last year should be tried for making false statements.
Rosnah Hassan Thomason, 43, of Four Oaks, told authorities 3-year-old Siraj Munir "Roji" Davenport disappeared from Brightleaf Flea Market, on U.S. Highway 301 South in Smithfield, on May 18, 2008.
The grand jury indicted Thomason Wednesday on those charges. In September, Thomason waived her right to a probable cause hearing and was released into the custody of a co-worker who lives in Spring Lake. She is prohibited from contacting the boy and must get permission from federal probation officials to go outside of Harnett and Cumberland counties.

Raleigh, N.C. — A woman who initiated a fake Amber Alert in Smithfield almost two years ago pleaded guilty Monday to a federal charge of making a false statement.
Rosnah Hassan Thomason, 43, of Four Oaks, told authorities that 3-year-old Siraj Munir "Roji" Davenport disappeared from Brightleaf Flea Market, on U.S. Highway 301 South in Smithfield, on May 18, 2008.

Thomason is scheduled to be sentenced on May 17, when she faces up to five years in prison and a $250,000 fine.
“The emergency reporting system needs to be taken seriously. It is for bona fide emergency situations that require medical treatment or police assistance, so that services can be dispatched quickly to those in need of help," U.S. Attorney George Holding said in a statement. "When a person reports a false emergency it takes from those in need valuable manpower and precious time while using resources already stretched tight.”

What a terribly mixed up woman. I hope that other people will hear of this case and it will prevent them from pulling a stunt like this.

I just don't get this entire case. I don't understand why she would report a child missing when he was in another country the entire time? What was she to gain from this???

People need to start being charged harshly when they abuse this system. It's usefulness is great to get to a child within that 3 hour rule. I believe this woman may have some form of mental illness. I wonder if she thought this child was her own...IDK how people think and get to this point??? :shrug1:
