Police: Vanished man could have traveled to N. Utah
Article Last Updated: 09/10/2007 10:28:38 AM MDT
Posted: 10:29 AM- The police chief looking for the missing Enoch man says he's confident the man's Chevy Blazer was spotted near Park City.
Enoch Police Chief David Browning also believes an old head injury could to blame for the man's disappearance.
A truck driver reported seeing Christopher Robin Coan's 1994 Blazer on Saturday at a Sinclair gas station at the junction of Interstate 80 and U.S. Highway 40.
Browning said the trucker accurately described the Blazer's maroon-over-silver two-tone paint as well as the stickers in the vehicle's rear window.
"I believe the trucker to be fairly credible," Browning said.
Browning said Coan's girlfriend traveled the 250 miles from Enoch to Park City during the weekend to view surveillance camera footage. The outside footage was not available, Browning said, and Coan was not spotted on footage from inside the station.
Coan disappeared Sept. 3 after finishing his shift at a Subway restaurant in Enoch. The search for him has concentrated on the off-road trials around Iron County, where police thought Coan might have driven his recently-purchased sports-utility vehicle.
Browning said there are no more searches planned in Iron County following what he described as a "fabulous job" by search and rescue crews.
Browning said Monday he's leaning toward a hypothesis that Coan is in northern Utah suffering from the effects of a head injury sustained when he was 7 years old. The effects surface occasionally over the years, Browning said, with Coan losing focus on his surroundings and overreacting to minor incidents.
Coan's last hours working at the Subway restaurant in Enoch might have been a catalyst for such an episode, Browning said. The restaurant's manager corrected Coan, a new employee, on a couple of points.
"To the ordinary person it wouldn't be an issue," Browning said.
If approached, Coan is likely to avoid eye contact and deny his identity, Browning said.
Anyone with information about Coan's whereabouts can contact Enoch police by calling 435-586-9445,

Investigators hope fresh look at case will find missing man
January 16th, 2009 @ 6:00pm
By Alex Cabrero
It's been almost a year and a half, but the case of a missing Utah teenager may soon be getting a fresh look.
Christopher Coan was last seen working at a Cedar City Subway in September of 2007. He was 18 at the time. Now, investigators in the small city of Enoch are thinking of asking the Iron County Sheriff's Office for help.
Every single day, every single time the phone rings or there's a knock at the door, David Coan hopes it's his son. "As life goes on, you have your missing son in your heart all the time," he said. "You always think that: Don't move, don't change phone numbers, don't do anything like that because Chris might be trying to call us."
The Enoch teenager got off work on Sept. 3, 2007, and just disappeared. "All we can do is rely on leads," said Enoch police Sgt. Daniel Raddatz.
But investigators with the Enoch Police Department say leads have stopped coming in, which is why they're thinking of asking the Iron County Sheriff's Office for help.
"If you stare at a case for as long, as we have, you might be overlooking things. You get a fresh set of eyes on it, and maybe they see something you haven't for all this time," Raddatz explained.
At this point, Chris's dad just wants an answer, good or bad. "Whatever happened, we want to know what it is. We want, I hate to use the word ‘closure,' but we do want to know," David said.
In the meantime, David's friends help him. Lisa Groove runs a record shop in Cedar City, where Chris's missing poster and t-shirt are reminders he's still missing. "I can't imagine what its like," she said.
"We traveled the Southwest some ourselves, looking, talking to people. We've done what we feel we can do. Now, it's like waiting to see what more we can do," David said.
A private investigator is helping the family. There have been rumors of Chris being in Silver City, N.M., even Salt Lake City; but so far, nothing.

Chris Coan was reported missing Sept. 3, 2007.
The mysterious disappearance of Chris Coan, who was reported missing Sept. 3, 2007, is still under investigation until his whereabouts are revealed.
Coan, who was 18 years old at the time of disappearance, was last seen leaving from his job at a Subway restaurant at 8:30 p.m. driving a 1994 maroon and silver Chevy Blazer.
He was wearing black corduroy pants and a green t-shirt reading "Almost, almost, almost" underneath a Subway vest.
Private Investigator Marquita Davis from Salt Lake City said she is not giving up on the case until Coan is found.
Davis and Nick Herrera organized a group called Utah Missing Persons Organization, which is solely dedicated to recovering missing people in Utah.
The Coan family received the position of family liaison of the UMPO, through which they will help organize fundraising and help families of missing people.
Davis said she's working on the case through media attention on MySpace, YouTube and airing the case on the television show America's Most Wanted.
"At this point all we have to do is get exposure and let Chris and his family know we haven't forgotten about him," Davis said.
Shannon Coan, Chris Coan's mother, said an anonymous person tipped a sighting of his vehicle in Silver City, N.M. Davis searched the area with nothing to report.
"(We want) to know where he physically is right now and if he's physically alive, how is he," Shannon Coan said. "The more time goes on, the harder it is for us to believe he would continue to be gone and not let us know."
Dave Coan, Chris Coan's father, said he recalls vividly the day he last saw his son.
"I could tell there was something bothering him, but he seemed fairly normal," Dave Coan said. "I thought it was a little odd he stayed so long with us on Sunday because he usually spent time with his girlfriend."
Dave Coan said there are two alternatives, other than the runaway theory, that could be the reason of his disappearance.
"Because he left the area, he left with someone else," Dave Coan said. "He didn't have his wallet with him, nor his driver's license. Possibly he left with someone else or more than one person."
The? second alternative to explain the disappearance is a possible abduction because Subway is close to Interstate 15, Dave Coan said.
The latter alternative is the primary reason why the Coans want to change jurisdiction from the Enoch Police Department to the Iron County Police Department.
"Right now I'm putting pressure on Enoch, and if I don't get any results I will talk to the mayor," Dave Coan said. "Our immediate goal right now is to get the jurisdiction handed off."
Dave Coan said Iron County Sherriff Mark Gower wants to look closely at two things. First, if kids know anything, and second, if anyone was waiting for Chris after he left work to abduct him.
"At this point we want to let him know that we love him," Dave Coan said. "It's not important to why he left but what we can do about the situation."

Body of teen missing since 2007 found
Updated: 04/09/2009 04:56:16 PM MDT
The body of a Enoch teen who disappeared in 2007 was found Wednesday in a car that apparently rolled down a cliff near Cedar City.
A man was searching for his dog in Right Hand Canyon about 7 miles east of Cedar City when he came upon a wrecked car containing a body believed to be that of 18-year-old Christopher Robin Coan.
Searchers reached the car early Thursday and found one body in the car, said Enoch Police Chief David Browning. Clothing on the body matched descriptions of what Coan was wearing when he disappeared Sept. 3, 2007, after leaving a Subway sandwich shop in Cedar City, Browning said.
The vehicle identification number on the wrecked maroon and silver Chevrolet Blazer matches Coan's car, Browning said.
The car was about 1,500 feet from the winding mountain road, Browning said.
Browning said Coan's family has been notified. They were shocked but hoped the news would bring closure, Browning said.

Body of missing man found
April 9th, 2009 @ 5:28pm
By Alex Cabrero
CEDAR CITY -- Missing for a year and a half, the body of 18-year-old Enoch resident Chris Coan was found Thursday morning near Cedar City.
According to Enoch Police Chief David Browning, Chris' body was found outside his truck by a search and rescue team located in a Cedar City canyon.
KSL 5 News spoke to Chris' father, David Coan, by phone Thursday afternoon. He's obviously very emotional after hearing about his son, but at the same time he said he's relieved to finally have an answer as to what happened to his boy.
Chris was last seen on September 3rd, 2007, working at a Subway restaurant in Enoch. He seemed to have disappeared until Iron County resident Rex Rushton stumbled upon the accident scene Wednesday night.
Rushton was walking his dogs near Right Hand Canyon when one of his dogs started running away from him. He followed his dog through thick brush and snow for about an hour when he found his dog and a pickup truck he recognized from missing person's fliers posted throughout town. He then called police.
Thursday morning, a search and rescue team went back to the area, found the pickup truck and then found Chris' body outside the truck. Chief Browning believes Chris lost control of his truck while driving in the canyon and rolled to the bottom.
Browning says this had been a case where they've followed hundreds, if not thousands, of leads in the past year and a half. It's taken them from New Mexico, and even to Canada. If nothing else, he's happy Chris' family finally has an answer.

This case brings tears to my eyes just reading about it. This poor family has waited for almost two years to find out what happened to Chris. When I first read about this case I just could not figure out where this young man had gone to. Now in hindsight knowing he drove along a canyon road the whole situation makes sense. May Christopher rest in peace and may his family have closure.

Family reacts to finding of son's body
April 10th, 2009 @ 6:03pm
By Alex Cabrero
CEDAR CITY -- From fear and desperation to sadness and shock; the Coan family in Iron County has been through all those emotions and more in the past year and a half. Their missing son's body was found Thursday at the bottom of a canyon near Cedar City.
For the past 19 months, the Coans have been searching everywhere for their son, 18-year-old Chris Coan. Turns out, he was less than 10 miles away.
"I'm still in shock," David Coan said. "Every day we can look from our house and see where it occurred."
Chris was found at the bottom of Right Hand Canyon near Cedar City Thursday. Police believe he died after his vehicle went off the steep road.
As tragic as the news is for the Coan family, they're relieved to finally have an answer. "The next time somebody thinks they saw the vehicle or Chris, we don't have to go through [that] roller coaster of emotions ever again," said Shannon Coan, Chris' stepmother.
Enoch Police Chief David Browning says he received hundreds of tips. "We've worked this case well over a year and a half now, and there hasn't been a day gone by where we didn't think about it," he said.
It wasn't until Rex Rushton chased his dogs into the Canyon, when he saw a vehicle in the thick brush. He recognized it from Coan's missing person posters. "As soon as I walked down and saw it was an S-10 blazer, yes, I immediately had the feeling," he said.
Police think Coan fell roughly 300 feet from the road above after missing a turn. Even though his family now knows Chris died a year and a half ago, for them, it feels like he died just yesterday.
"It's all new feelings. It's all new emotions and a new shock," Shannon said.
But they also know that shock will soon bring closure. "From the beginning we said we wanted to bring him home, no matter what that means. Obviously, this isn't the way we wanted to bring him home, but at least we know," Shannon said.
The family is making funeral plans; they'd like it to be a celebration of Chris' life. They also believe they can now be at peace, but more importantly, so can Chris.

Christopher Robin Coan's Two-Year Disappearance Finally Solved
May 18, 2009
http://blogs.discovery.com/.a/6a00d8341bf67c53ef01157091b43c970b-150wi (http://blogs.discovery.com/.a/6a00d8341bf67c53ef01157091b43c970b-popup)
I first wrote about the mysterious disappearance of 18-year-old Christopher Robin Coan in September 2007. Now, nearly two years later, I can finally write the conclusion to that story. Unfortunately, there is no happy ending, but, in these kinds of cases, there seldom is.
On the night of Sept. 3, 2007, Christopher completed a three-hour shift at a Subway sandwich shop in Cedar City, Utah, and walked out the front door, never to be seen again. Christopher's girlfriend, Sasha Turner, worked a double shift on the night of Christopher's disappearance, and did not return home until 8:00 am on Sept. 4. It was then that she discovered that Chris was missing, at which time she alerted the authorities.
"The manager [of Subway] watched him leave," Enoch Police Chief Dave Browning said in a September 2007 interview with Suujournal.com. "There was no one around, because the Subway is in a shopping area where the rest of the stores aren't built yet."
In the days and weeks that followed, Christopher's family, local authorities, and community volunteers conducted several aerial and ground searches for Chris and his 1994 Chevrolet S-10 Blazer. Unfortunately, none of the searches turned up any evidence related to the case.
When Christopher first went missing, authorities speculated that a head injury that he sustained when he was seven years old might have caused him to lose focus and drive off, perhaps not knowing who he was or where he was going. However, those close to the investigation did not consider that a plausible theory, as Christopher had not exhibited that type of behavior in the past. They also believed that if that were the case, either Christopher or his vehicle would have resurfaced.
"He did not exhibit any sign of depression or stress that would cause him to leave," private investigator Marquita "Marki" Davis said in a November 2008 interview with Investigation Discovery. "He was in love with his girlfriend and happy with his life."
The mystery surrounding Christopher's disappearance continued until April 9, 2009, when a man walking a dog near Highway 14 spotted Christopher’s badly damaged SUV in some brush at the bottom of Right Hand Canyon. When police arrived on the scene, they found Christopher's remains inside the vehicle.
Investigators believe that Christopher lost control of his vehicle and slid down the 1000 foot canyon. The area had previously been searched; however, heavy brush and snow drifts had made it virtually impossible to spot the wreckage.
Christopher's family held a memorial service for him on April 25 at Southern Utah Mortuary in Cedar City. According to Christopher's father, Dave Coan, the event helped bring closure to the family.
The findchirs.org (http://www.findchris.org/) Website has since been updated and now contains a copy of his obituary and a link to a newly created memorial page (http://christopher-coan.virtual-memorials.com/main.php?action=view&mem_id=16486&page_no=1).
"It has been a long hard search for Chris but we never gave up the search nor did we give up hope that we would get answers," reads a statement on the Website.
While the way Christopher was found was perhaps not the most ideal, it has answered many questions for the folks who loved him dearly. At least now they will no longer have to continue to wait and wonder...
