St. Paul Police, Family Search For Missing Teen

ST. PAUL (WCCO) ― A St. Paul family is asking for help finding their 17-year-old son. Joey Kaiser left his house on Tuesday located on St. Clair Avenue.

Joey suffers from bi-polar disorder and his mother said he was extremely agitated. The junior at Cretin-Derham Hall has not been heard from since.

"He ran out of the house, grabbed a bike, had nothing with him. No ID, no wallet, no money," said his mother Molly Kaiser.

Joey left wearing a gray sweatshirt with colored graffiti on it and blue jeans. He is 6 feet, 2 inches and 200 pounds. He was riding an older brown mountain bike with one pedal.

Anyone who has seen Joey in the past two days or may be aware of his location is asked to call the St. Paul Police Department missing persons unit at 651-266-5646 or 651-291-1111.

Joseph C. Kaiser, who is 6 feet 2 and 200 pounds, is considered vulnerable because he has bipolar disorder, police say.

St. Paul police are asking for the public's help in finding a vulnerable 17-year-old boy who they say left home Tuesday morning in a "manic state."

Joseph C. Kaiser, who is 6 feet 2 and 200 pounds, rode off on a one-pedal bike, police spokesman Peter Panos said Wednesday.

He is considered vulnerable because he has bipolar disorder, police say.

There is no indication of foul play, Panos said.

When last seen, Kaiser was wearing a light gray sweatshirt, bluejeans and a black backpack.

He lives in the 2100 block of St. Clair Avenue.

Anyone with information is asked to call the department's missing-persons unit at 651-266-5646 or 651-291-1111.

I am so worried about the fact that he only had on a sweatshirt and jeans. Unless he had a jacket or hoodie in the backpack, that is not enough for how cold the evenings still are.

He may have gone to a friend's house or found an outbuilding to stay in overnight. Keeping prayers up for him, and hope he comes home today.

St. Paul police and fire department officials searched for a missing teen Saturday near St. Clair Avenue and Mississippi River Boulevard in St. Paul.

Joseph Christopher Kaiser, 17, left his home in the 2100 block of St. Clair Avenue about 11 a.m. Tuesday and hasn't been seen since.

On Friday, police recovered a bicycle near the base of a footpath along the Mississippi River. Police did not confirm nor deny it was Kaiser's bike.

The police plan to show the bike to the family Tuesday. But after watching TV reports, one family member said the bike appeared to belong to Kaiser.

Kaiser's dark bike has one pedal, said his mother, Molly Kaiser. She said he had no money or identification on him.

Police called the Fire Department while searching the area because patches are difficult to navigate, St. Paul Deputy Fire Chief Michael Gulner said.

The Fire Department provided a boat and rope team.

Kaiser has bipolar disorder and left home in a manic state, his mother said.

"He's never gone away like that," she said.

Kaiser is 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 200 pounds. He has blue eyes and was last seen wearing a light-gray sweat shirt with colorful graffiti-like text, blue jeans and a black backpack.

Anyone with information about Kaiser is asked to call police at 651-266-5646 or 651-291-1111.

Police and family continue to search for 17-year-old Joey Kaiser. Kaiser took off from his home on Tuesday in what his mother describes as a "manic" state.

"He had been on a drug the last two weeks, a new drug for a bipolar situation. He went into a manic episode," said Molly Kaiser, his mother.

Police started their search on Wednesday. On Friday evening, they found what they believe could be his bike along the banks of the Mississippi River near St. Clair Avenue. On Saturday, crews with the "Search, Rescue and Recovery Resources of Minnesota," along with fire and police crews, searched the area looking for additional clues.

Meantime, family and friends have handed out thousands of fliers describing Joey and the circumstances of his disappearance.

"The fact he's not back yet is extremely shocking to us," said Jennifer Kaiser, his sister.

"He's the nicest kid in the whole world," said Molly Kaiser. "We're just praying Joey's going to walk through that door."

Search crews will resume their search Sunday morning. Family and friends are also coordinating their own search. They're asking volunteers to meet at Groveland Park at 9 a.m. Sunday. The park is located at the corner of Prior and St. Clair Avenues.

Joseph is described as being 6 feet, two inches tall, having brown hair and blue eyes and weighing 200 pounds. He was last seen wearing blue jeans and a multi-colored sweatshirt. He was carrying a backpack and may have been riding a mountain bike.

Anyone with any information about Joey Kaiser is asked to call St. Paul Police at 651.266.5646 or 651.291.1111.

ST. PAUL (WCCO) ― Hundreds of people are spending their holiday weekend searching for a missing St. Paul teenager.

Joey Kaiser, 17, hasn't been seen since Tuesday. He has bi-polar disorder and his family is worried he's in danger.

Volunteers have been meeting at Groveland Park in St. Paul to cover as much of the metro as possible. They're searching for any sign of the Cretin Durham Hall junior.

"The state he left in, he wasn't himself. He wasn't Joey at all," said Jennifer Kaiser, Joey Kaiser's sister.

Joey Kaiser left his St. Paul home with a bike with one pedal, wearing a graffiti print jacket and a backpack and may have had a book on atheism. He had no money, no identification, no food or medication.

"We're worried he could've hurt himself because he wasn't himself," Jennifer Kaiser said. "He could be a danger to someone since he's not in his own state of mind right now."

Police discovered a bike Saturday near the Mississippi River, not far from Joey Kaiser's home. The family feels confident it's his bike, but police are not confirming the bike's owner. The family hopes to see the bike in the next couple of days.

"He was angry when he left so he may have just ridden around and then just tossed the bike. We just feel like he's out there somewhere and we want him to come home," said Joey Kaiser's aunt, Rosie Gavin.

A group of family friends and classmates put up flyers and looked for clues around Minnehaha Falls on Sunday.

"When I heard that he went missing, like my heart sank because he's one of the coolest guys ever, " said Katie Cornet, Joey Kaiser's classmate.

Not knowing where to look is frustrating for the group and every additional day brings more worry.

"I'm going to keep trying until, until it's finished," Cornet said.

Joey Kaiser's family is very grateful to the hundreds of people who've come out all week to help in the search, some people they don't even know.

If you have any information about Joey Kaiser's whereabouts, you should call the St. Paul Police Department.

Police, family search for missing St. Paul teen

Last update: May 27, 2008 - 8:12 AM

Dozens of friends and relatives of Joey Kaiser spent Memorial Day retracing their steps to see if they overlooked clues as to what happened to the St. Paul teenager missing since last Tuesday.

"Anywhere we can think of that Joey might have gone, that's where we're going," Jennifer Kaiser, his 19-year-old sister, said Monday afternoon.

Authorities focused their search on the Mississippi River after Friday night, when a passerby found what could be the 17-year-old's bike in bushes on a river bank at Mississippi River Boulevard and St. Clair Avenue. Officers spent Saturday combing the river and the bushes, but found no trace of the teen.

Police won't let the family see the bicycle until today because they wanted to conduct DNA tests on the bike.

Jennifer Kaiser said her father saw the bike on TV and believes it is his son's.

"We're about 95 percent positive it's his," she said. "The bike that Joey has is extremely distinct. ... There's only one of them out there."

Family members could not see whether the bike on TV had a missing pedal like Joey's bike, she said.

Dogs searched the riverbank Saturday but didn't find a scent trail, she said.

On Sunday, more than 200 volunteers scoured the Twin Cities, suburbs and the riverbank. Among the places searched were storm drains feeding into the river because Joey Kaiser liked to explore them, his sister said Monday.

She said searchers also checked in downtown St. Paul to see whether her brother might have gotten on a bus.

"The search is still going on; [police] can't do anything else until they have another lead," she said Monday. "It's been a hard weekend for us."

St. Paul family still looking for missing teen

It's a cold and cloudy spring morning in St. Paul, and Molly Kaiser has her door open.

Sitting on her living room couch, just past the entryway of her St. Clair Avenue home, she talks about how she still holds onto the hope her teenage son will walk through the door, any second.

"I just want to know where he is. Every day I pray, and say, 'Please God bring him home. Please, God, we love him so much,' " she said, repeatedly running her hands through her hair, trying to hold it together. "I just can't take it another day."

It's been two weeks. Two weeks since 17-year-old Joey Kaiser left on a bike with one pedal, in a frame of mind that shocked her, talking nonsense after being put on a new medication. Joey Kaiser had recently suffered from anxiety and depression and may possibly have a bipolar disorder, but has not officially been diagnosed, his mother said.

Since then, more than 100 of his classmates at Cretin-Durham Hall High School have assembled for a vigil, and hundreds of family members and friends have posted fliers across the city. On Grand Old Day, Kaiser's face stared out from every lamppost along Grand Avenue.

It began at 11 a.m., May 20, a Tuesday. He'd stayed home from school and seemed frantic.

"He was not in his right mind. I saw my beautiful son turn into someone I didn't even know," Molly Kaiser said. The boy had been on a new medication for two weeks. He entered an extreme state of excitement and agitation that Molly Kaiser struggled to comprehend.

He was also in the midst of studying for finals at school.

In a burst of energy, Joey stuffed something small into what appeared to be an empty backpack. The things he didn't take worry his mother more: his wallet, money, ID, phone. Molly Kaiser ran to the front door to lock it, but Joey fled out the back and mounted his bike.

The mother screamed, "Joey, come back, I have something to tell you," as he rode away. He had never come close to running away before.

"Within 10 seconds, I called 911," Kaiser said. For as long as police would let her, she rode with them and then tried to take her own car.

A neighbor, seeing the state she was in, stopped her, worried for her own safety.

"I was ballistically out of my mind at this point," Kaiser said.

Days passed. After a long and worrisome three, police found Joey's bike at the base of a path leading to the Mississippi River bluffs. The path — a short distance from where St. Clair Avenue dead-ends into Mississippi River Boulevard — is a few blocks away from his home, in the 2100 block of St. Clair Avenue.

"Obviously, that becomes a very concentrated area in the search," said Cmdr. Paul Iovino, who heads the juvenile and missing persons unit of the St. Paul Police Department.

Since then, dozens of city and county law enforcement officials have scoured the Mississippi and its edge, helped by dogs, a rappel team for the steeper cliffs and sonar-equipped boats. Another boat — with a more sophisticated sonar array — is on its way from Duluth.

Though Iovino said he's received a variety of tips about supposed sightings, none has panned out. The dogs had a few "hits" in the water near the base of the footpath, but nothing that could be confirmed.

Still, Iovino said he has hope: "The search is still very much alive.

"We have nothing to suggest that there's reason to suspect foul play or we shouldn't be optimistic. ... We truly have not recovered anything, either at the house or anywhere else, to suggest he has fallen in harm's way."

Events such as this can pull a family together, or tear it apart. In this case, it appears to be the former — Molly Kaiser's 15 brothers and sisters and 34 nieces and nephews have recruited an army of hundreds of volunteers to form the core of a two-county search.

"People are coming out of the woodwork for him," said Peg St. Clair, Molly's sister.

"I got a call from a homeless woman," Kaiser said. "She said there were a lot of homeless people searching for Joey, too.

"As a mother, I still haven't given up hope."

This evening a prayer service was held beside the bluff where Joey's bike was found. About 250 people attended.

During a similar service Friday at Cretin-Durham Hall High School, about 160 students showed up to pray for Joey, a junior known to be adept at art and interested in music.

"That demonstrates the support he has. He was very well-liked," Principal Richard Englar said. "They're concerned, hopeful, prayerful. It's one of those things, you just don't know. ... We're scared to death, to tell you the truth."

Kaiser is white, 6 feet 2 inches tall and weighs 200 pounds. He has brown hair and blue eyes and was last seen wearing a light gray sweatshirt with colorful, graffiti-like text, blue jeans and a black backpack. He may have a skateboard with him with the words "Steel Jesus" and "Joey loves Dani" in yellow graffiti. The family has offered a $5,000 reward for information "that results in locating and/or the safe return of Joey Kaiser."

Tax-deductible donations to "The Find Joey Kaiser Fund" can be sent to any Wells Fargo Bank; the account is managed by bank officer Robert Fischer at 651-205-5492.

Anyone with information on Kaiser is asked to call police at 651-266-5646 or 651-291-1111.

Body found in river near Ford Plant could be missing teenager
Last update: August 19, 2008 - 8:28 PM

A body was recovered from the Mississippi River on Tuesday near the Ford plant in St. Paul, a police spokesman said.

That is the area where authorities searched for Joey Kaiser, 17, of St. Paul, who disappeared in May after leaving his house in a "manic state."

But police spokesman Peter Panos said that the body was so badly decomposed that gender could not be immediately determined. The Ramsey County medical examiner's office likely will have to rely on DNA evidence to make an identification, he said.

Jennifer Kaiser, the missing teenager's sister, said Tuesday that the family had no comment. She indicated, however, that there was little hope for a happy ending: "We just want to grieve in peace," she said.

Panos said city firefighters pulled the body from along a walkway that extends into the river from the Ford plant. It was spotted about 9 a.m. by members of the Hennepin County Sheriff's water patrol, he said.

ST. PAUL, Minn.

Authorities have pulled a body from the Mississippi River, near an area where they were searching for a missing St. Paul teenager.

The body was found Tuesday near the Ford plant in St. Paul.

Police say the body is too badly decomposed to immediately determine if it is that of 17-year-old Joey Kaiser. Kaiser disappeared in May after leaving his house in a "manic state."

The Ramsey County medical examiner's office is working on identifying the remains.

Pioneer Press (St. Paul, Minnesota)
August 20, 2008 Wednesday

BRIEF: ID of body pulled from river may take two weeks
Aug. 20--DNA will be used to try to identify a body found Tuesday in the Mississippi River in St. Paul, and it could take up to two weeks to get results, police said today.

Because of the level of decomposition, the person's gender wasn't immediately known, said Peter Panos, St. Paul police spokesman.

The Ramsey County medical examiner's office is conducting an autopsy.

The body was spotted Tuesday morning by the Hennepin County sheriff's office water patrol, and St. Paul firefighters pulled it from the water near the Ford Motor Co. plant.

Police will be checking whether the person had been reported missing. As of this morning, there were 89 open cases of missing and runaway adults and teens in St. Paul, said Cmdr. Paul Iovino, who heads the missing persons unit.

Police spokesman Peter Panos says no foul play is suspected in the death of 17-year-old Joey Kaiser.

Kaiser left his St. Paul home on May 20 on a bike with one pedal. Three days after Kaiser disappeared, police found his bike at the base of a path leading to the Mississippi River bluffs, a few blocks from his home.
