Cortland city police are seeking help from the public in locating a Delaware County woman last seen 11 days ago.

The woman is identified as Rebecca E. Gruver, 21, of Walton. Police said Gruver had previously attended the State University College at Cortland.

Gruver is described as 5'5" tall, weighing 135 pounds with medium length brown hair and brown eyes. She is operating a 2001 blue Pontiac Sunfire with Ohio registration DXU 3647.

She was last seen in Cortland on May 8, when she told her roommate she was packing to go home but never showed up there. On May 14, she was reported missing by her mother.

Rebecca is my niece, my sister's daughter. We know she is either with someone or something bad has happened. If anyone knows her or has seen her, please let her know that "Mom isn't mad - she is worried and scared. Please at least tell someone one you know to let Mom know you are okay if you are able" We love you very much and want to hear from you. Aunt Doreen

Police search for missing woman

WALTON _ A 21-year-old Walton woman has not been heard from for two weeks, but Walton Police Department Sgt. Paul Olson said there is no indication of foul play.

Rebecca E. Gruver was last seen in Cortland on May 8 when she told her roommate she was packing to go home to Walton.

"Nothing about this appears to be suspicious," Olson said Wednesday. "Everything leads us to believe she is up near the Cortland area, but we can't eliminate the possibility that something is wrong until we find her."

Olson added, "The time frame is beginning to get scary, but she could have met some new friend on the Internet or be somewhere where there is no cell-phone service."

Olson said the Walton Police Department has been working with the Cortland Police Department to try to locate Gruver, who is 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighs 135 pounds and has medium-length brown hair and brown eyes.

Gruver is operating a 2001 blue Pontiac Sunfire with Ohio registration DXU 3647. Olson said her father lives in Ohio.

Sharon Gruver contacted the Cortland Police Department on May 14, after her daughter had not returned home.

Olson said Rebecca's friends, relatives and work associates have all been contacted, but none of them have heard from her.

"I can't even tell you the number of kids we have talked to about her," Olson said. "She has a lot of friends and some of them have told us that it's not uncommon for her to go away for a couple of weeks.

"She had been home just prior to her disappearance and she was making arrangements for the final payment on her apartment," Olson said.

He said there is no criminal action of any kind pending against Rebecca Gruver.

She had attended college in Cortland for several semesters, but was not enrolled in the spring semester.

Peter Koryzno, SUNY Cortland spokesman, said she was enrolled in the fall semester that ended in December, but did not attend this year.

Peter Voorhees, Tompkins Cortland Community College spokesman, said Gruver was enrolled in the spring 2007 semester.

"This was the fourth place she had been enrolled," Voorhees said Wednesday. "She transferred credits from SUNY Cortland, Columbus State Community College in Ohio and from SUNY Delhi."

Voorhees said it isn't uncommon for students to move back and forth between SUNY Cortland and Tompkins Cortland Community College.

Gruver worked at Pontillo's Pizza on Groton Avenue in Cortland according to an employee who answered the phone Wednesday. Jeff Constantino, owner of the restaurant, did not return a call to comment on the disappearance of his employee.

Olson said, "Technically, Rebecca is an adult who has the right to just get in her car and drive away, but her mother is extremely worried about her."

Sharon Gruver did not answer her phone Thursday afternoon or night and does not have an answering machine.

Olson said Sharon Gruver admits she is hard to reach by phone, but police are hoping Rebecca will call friends or the police.

Police are asking anyone who has seen her or knows where Rebecca may be to call the Cortland Police Department at 753-3001, ext. 0 or the Walton Police Department at 865-5400.

Mother awaits news about missing woman
By Patricia Breakey
Delhi News Bureau

WALTON _ The mother of a missing 21-year-old Walton woman is traveling between the Walton and Cortland police departments anxiously awaiting news of her daughter's whereabouts.

Sharon Gruver said Thursday night that she had last seen her daughter, Rebecca, on May 2 when she left her home in Walton to return to Cortland.

"My last words to her were I love you and I will see you on Thursday,'" Sharon Gruver said. "It was just the same as every other time she left."

Rebecca Gruver has not been heard from for more than two weeks, but Walton Police Department Sgt. Paul Olsen said there is no indication of foul play.

"It's odd and I am hoping that is all it is," Sharon Gruver said of her daughter's disappearance. "I just want to know where she is."

Rebecca Gruver was last seen in Cortland on May 8 when she told her roommate she was packing to go home to Walton.

Olsen said the Walton Police Department has been working with the Cortland Police Department to try to locate Gruver, who is 5 feet 5 inches tall, weighs 135 pounds and has medium-length brown hair and brown eyes.

Her car is a 2001 blue Pontiac Sunfire with Ohio registration DXU 3647. Olsen said her father lives in Ohio.

Sharon Gruver contacted the Cortland Police Department on May 14.

"There was nothing unusual about my not contacting the police for so long," she said. "It was a case of I thought she was there and they thought she was here and it took a while before we realized that no one knew where she was."

Gruver said she is particularly concerned that no one has seen the car her daughter was driving.

"A person can be hard to find," she said. "But how do you make a car disappear?"

Olsen said her daughter's friends, relatives and work associates have all been contacted, but none of them has heard from her.

Rebecca does have a cell phone, and she has never vanished like this before, her mother said.

"She may have gone somewhere for a couple of weeks, but someone always knew where she was," Gruver said. "This time I have talked to people who have talked to people, and we are all baffled. If she is somewhere with someone, it has to be somebody that no one else knows."

Olsen said it was hoped that the published accounts of Rebecca's disappearance would generate information.

"The longer this goes on, the more concerned I get," Olsen said.

"There have been several false sightings," he continued.

She had attended college in Cortland for several semesters, but was not enrolled during the spring semester.

Gruver worked at Pontillo's Pizza on Groton Avenue in Cortland. She was planning to move back to Walton and commute to work, her mother said, which she had done in the past.

Police are asking anyone who has seen her or knows where she may be to call the Cortland Police Department at 753-3001, ext. 0, or the Walton Police Department at 865-5400.

WALTON _ A 21-year-old Walton woman is still missing, but Cortland police are pursuing leads, Lt. Paul A. Sandy said Monday.

Rebecca Gruver has not been seen or heard from since May 8. Her mother, Sharon Gruver, contacted the Cortland Police Department on May 14 to report her daughter missing.

Sandy said Gruver's disappearance is "being worked diligently and the search is escalating on a daily basis. We have pulled out all the stops and are absolutely trying to check every lead.

"She is not in trouble," Sandy said. "People seem to think she has done something wrong, and she hasn't."

Sandy said police departments in Walton, Buffalo, Elmira and Ithaca, as well as in Lancaster and Columbus, Ohio, are among others involved in the investigation of Gruver's whereabouts.

"We can't verify it, but she has probably gone somewhere of her own accord," Sandy said.

Sandy said Gruver is not using her cell phone, which could have helped track her movements.

Gruver was last seen in Cortland on May 8 when she told her roommate she was packing to go home to Walton.

Sharon Gruver, Rebecca's mother, said Thursday night that she had last seen her daughter May 2 as she left her home in Walton to return to Cortland.

Her car is a 2001 blue Pontiac Sunfire with Ohio registration DXU 3647.

Sandy said time between the disappearance and the police notification gave Rebecca Gruver a "whole week for a head start."

Police are asking anyone who has seen her or knows where she may be to call the Cortland Police Department at 753-3001, ext. 0, or the Walton Police Department at 865-5400.
