Still awaiting the outcome of Ely's most known cold case leaves Heather Lewis' family and the White Pine County Sheriff's Department wondering what really happened to the long-missing teenager. http://images.townnews.com/elynews.com/content/articles/2008/04/02/lifestyle/life01_thumb.jpg (http://javascript%3Cb%3E%3C/b%3E:thumbnailWindow%28%27/articles/2008/04/02/lifestyle/life01.img%27,%20400,%20420%29)

Her father said she might look a little different than this image. She has red hair and might be tall and thin.

Her family believes she ran away, but they also fear that her leaving home at 13 could have turned the situation into a runaway gone bad including the possibility of abduction after she left the area.
The sheriff's department continues to look at the case as that of a teenage runaway.
Lewis disappeared after cigarettes were found in her possession at school and she was suspended. She did not go home and has not been seen in Ely since.
<snip>
Shortly before she disappeared, Lewis told friends in Ely that she missed her mother, older brother and maternal grandparents in Oklahoma and wanted to visit them. In 2003, Lewis lived with her father and stepmother in Ely. By then her father and biological mother had been apart for several years.
<snip>
“After the posters went up we had a resident of McGill say he had seen her in a convenience store and she and some other girls were talking about how they were going to get to Las Vegas,” Stolk said.
That was the last tip investigators had of a credible report of a local sighting of Lewis. Since then, the sheriff's department received other calls from people saying they thought they had seen her in White Pine County.
The websites include that of the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children and a MySpace.com (http://ads.stephensmedia.com/click.ng/site=ely&channel=ely&size=300x250) page posted by her family. The Internet exposure has generated numerous tips from various parts of the country.
Stolk said the sheriff's department interviewed more than a dozen middle school students in 2003 who knew her. “She and a friend had discussed running away,” he said. The other girl told investigators that she did not know what happened to Lewis. Detectives have never identified the girls that were with her in a store in McGill.
Heather Lewis has red hair and hazel eyes. At the time she disappeared at age 13 she was 5-foot, 4 inches and weighed 85 pounds. Her father said she is probably tall and still very thin.
Anyone with information about where Heather Lewis is or what happened to her should contact the White Pine County Sheriff's Department at 289-8808.

Hope her mom and dad's families are keeping in communication if there would be any contact from her or someone that has seen her.
A friend of mine disappeared and was gone for a year. Turned out she was with a sister in California but no one had let on to her mother.

I wonder what time of the day she was suspended and why the school didn't contact a family member to come and pick her up. If they allowed a child that young to walk off campus without adult present to take responsibility of her then they should be investigated for child endangerment. I pray she is somewhere safe, but that antsy meter goes up with cases such as this one.

ITA with you. It seems odd that they let her leave without having an adult pick her up. IMO I pray she is found.

When I was in high school, when you were suspended you were expected to finish the day. A note was sent home with you notifying your parents and one went out in the mail as well. Anyone could just walk out the doors provided you got by the hall monitor who check for your pass and without one you were then escorted to the office. Its just too easy to walk out, then and now.
