It's all Michelle Pfeiffer's fault.

I was just about over my desire to grow my hair long when I saw a picture of the 49-year-old actress. She looked absolutely gorgeous -- with long, shining, gloriously highlighted locks.

I realize she's a celebrity who likely has a lot of help to look that good. But I've also noticed more and more "normal" women in their 40s and even their 50s sporting beautiful, long hair.

So -- I'm back to square one: Should I cut or should I grow?

I have a friend well into her 70's with long beautiful hair. Men still turn their head when she walks into the room.

Wow, Harlett that is long hair! I used to have it too, but my hair is thick and wavy and I find I can still do many styles with it short.. I was around 40 when I cut it and really haven't looked back since. :happy0207:

Check out those before and after pics in the link.. pretty amazing.

I am thinking of going a bit shorter, maybe another 6" but that will be it. I can throw it up in a ponytail in the summer, or wind it up with a clip when in the pool.. it just works so much better for me. I actually had to spend more time fixing my hair when it was short :67302:

OMG the last time my hair was that long I was a teenager!

There was an article in the NY Daily News yesterday, about a woman who hadn't cut her hair for 45 years. She had it all cut off and looks a lot younger now. Check it out:

How do you keep the snarls out? When my hair was longer and straight, I had problems with getting snarls, especially underneath. I have baby fine hair, but a lot of it. I just got it cut to above my shoulders, which is easier to take care of until I get a perm again.

As for should older woman wear long hair, I think it depends on how it looks on the individual woman.

I think it depends on the woman. Some women look fantastic well into late life with long hair. Some women, don't. I'm one of those women who do not look good with long hair. IMO

I think it's harder for older women to wear long hair well. Especially if it starts getting gray. Coloring long hair is difficult, too.
I keep mine in a bob now, much easier.

20 year old's can carry long hair, not me.

Yikes!

When I was driving at lunch time the other day, I saw this girl walking on the sidewalk, from the back. She had her hair in a clip at the nape of her neck and her hair was ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE BACK OF HER KNEES! Lordy I have NEVER seen hair that long. I did a double take. She was Oriental....quite striking. Probably in her late teens or early 20's.

I remember reading many years ago that not all people can grow their hair really, really long. I tend to believe it. When I was much younger I'd let my hair grow for years at a time and it would never get longer than about the middle of my back.

When I hit around 50 my hair started thinning so I don't keep it as long anymore.

I'd say, if you can look like Michelle Pfeiffer, go for it. :zm10:

I was approaching the entrance to a store today and happened to see a woman just ready to step off the curb at the same time. She was probably 50's to 60, and she had gorgeous, long hair. I stopped to tell her, "Your hair is so pretty." She gave me a really big smile and thank you.

:basic44:Well it depends on the woman I agree. I love short hair, cannot stand my hair long it's too fine and too thin, it's always been that way. I had long hair as a child, another reason why I think I hate it so on me.....ICK! I had spikes for yrs, I mean about 20 yrs, now I have a pixie. I really love it, but it is expensive to color short hair.....so I do it myself and get highlights sometimes. I love the pixie cut, because its so soft, no guck in my hair, a little paul mitchel or bed head if I want a messy look and tada viola. Keep it simple sherlock! Dh told me this week he thinks I look like twiggy, so yes it's just like twiggy's old cut.

Well, for my very first post I think I will chime in on the hair issue. I have a love/hate relationship with my hair, lol. It drives me crazy and always has. I don't look good with short hair, right now it is all about the same length - maybe 3" below my ears. I really need bangs, but I have a slight cowlick, so my bangs used to always look uneven. Oh well, the color is good, it's relatively healthy and it's always clean, so I guess I shouldn't complain.

Long or short, I think whatever suits the person is the way to go.

My hair is very long. I'm not old, but I'm not twenty, either. It's naturally wavy, so I can go straight, or very curly. I love the versatility. I think length depends on the individual. Jane Seymour is my hair role model. She's way older than I am, and looks good with her long hair.

I love Jane Seymour's hair! You're so fortunate to have the option of going straight or curly. I used to be able to do that, but as I've gotten older it just kind of does the frizz thing and I have to use the flat iron. I'm so glad to have a super good hairdresser, she keeps my split ends to a minimum and does a fantastic job on my hair color.

My hair is just to my shoulders. I have always worn my hair long but it takes so much time to blow dry. I have an appointment the end of this month and getting a shorter hair cut.

As so many have said it depends on the woman as to how long they can wear their hair. I have seen some really scary long hair on older women.
Looking for a picture with short hair that I like that I can take with me.

Is this a part of the Website that belongs only to the women? Women are suspected (by men) of being very concerned with their hair. Most men find a style that they think suits them, and that they can maintain with a minimum of attention. Comb it in 30 seconds with just water, even including that little cowlick that won't stay down. Color it at your peril--every woman in a 30-mile radius can tell instantly that you colored it. I don't give much of a damn how a man wears his hair, so long as he doesn't look like a woman. Or like a man with a mullet.

I was intrigued when reading the Bible as part of Freshman English. Specifically, I was intrigued by the story of Samson, whose long hair was his pride and joy, and eventually his undoing. "Who's been plowing with my heifer?" he bellowed. His heifer was Delilah, who did the cutting. Well, what did you expect, she was a Philistine, and you know what they're like.

But I've thought a lot about women's hair ever since I realized that it was part of their sexual allure. No, I don't mean that they sit and plan what will be the biggest magnet for men. They don't have to. Men are drawn by it, even when they don't know it. Stop here if you're planning to call me a pervert, or a girly-man. I don't care what you think in that regard, but it's embarrassing to be called those things in public.

Not being totally blind, I realized early in life that past a certain age hardly any women wore their hair long. Someone has suggested 30, but I don't think even Stacy London and Clinton Kelly, who don't mind telling women What not to wear, have set that age. Stacy has long hair, and she's forty if she's a day.

So I had to ask myself, "Why?"

(1) Is it a rite of passage, passage from unarried young-womanhood to married mature-womanhood? There are plenty of examples of that. You change the hibiscus from your left ear to your right. Or you stop wearing pretty clothes and dress in black (ever traveled in rural Italy?). Is this a way to deflect the interest of young men by letting them know you're not available?

(2) Or perhaps, older women just get tired of fussing over their hair, and cut it for convenience' sake.

(3) Or perhaps, in one of those reversals of vanity, showing the other side of the coin, older women don't want to appear vain, trying to hang on to their youth, trying to compete as though they didn't have better things to do than their hair. Be cool, admit your maturity, cut your hair.
__________________________________________________ __________________

There is also the beauty part. I like female beauty, and I don't mind admitting it. And hair is undoubtedly an attractant.

There has probably always been the notion that the first thing men notice about a woman is not her face--or her hair, or her clothing, and so on. Actually this has been researched, and men DO notice the face, usually first before anything else, jumping to other points of interest thereafter.

My theory is that the first thing a man focuses his eyes on when first encountering a woman is that which is best lit, that is, most visible, which is often the face, because of its light reflective color. But if the woman is somewhat distant, he will notice anything light, such as the legs or arms, or anything in motion, and if the woman is jogging, the hair will very likely to be bobbing up and down, or flying about in some other pattern. You think men don't notice? Some do, and they like it. Even bobbed hair will bounce when you jog. And even if they say they don't notice, well, men don't always notice what they are noticing, do they?

Other things that bounce? Well, in that case you're probably talking about someone in closer range. But remember, you've got peripheral vision, so even if you're focusing on the face, other things are not invisible.

Chapter 3. Smokey as a pervert.

In high school I was often thrown together with Betty Pahuta, the prettiest girl in the class, and a natural blonde. (We were co-editors of the school paper.) She never shaved her limbs, which were covered by fine, blonde hair, quite visible but very attractive. Actually I'm not repelled by unshaven limbs no matter what color the hair as long as there's no really thick, black hair reminding one of Planet of the Apes. (Fine black hair does not bother me any more than visible stubble does.)

Later in life I occasionally had the opportunity to see other parts of the female body, such as tummy and back, protected by natural hairs. I know women don't shave their backs, but I don't think they need to shave anything. I haven't been asked my opinion about axilla-shaving, but I don't think I care. Maybe one ought to shave there before a really big dance. __________________________________________________ ________
DId I mention that in my sophomore year of high school, my neigbors included the Robinson family? Mrs. Robinson was a bearded lady. She shaved every day, but had five-o'clock shadow all day long, worst late in the day, but conspicuous even right after she shaved. She wore high-neck dresses, but still, her rather thick chest hair pushed out over the top of her dress. She used to sit in her parlor with her husband, discussing current matters of interest just like any other couple in the world.

I was pals with one of her two sons, and often visited him in his room, as he wasn't an early riser. Even in the winter (this was in the snow belt of Central New York) he would leave his windows wide open, and many's the day I found him in bed surrounded by snow in his room and on the bed. He didn't draw his shades, and occasionally some neighbor would complain that they were getting a better view than they wanted. His hair, if you care, was lighter than that of his mother, so he shaved less often.

So those are my views, in brief, about female hair.

I've never thought about whether it was a good idea when I reached 40, to cut my hair. What I think is important is to maintain your hair at any age and your hair will look nice. I never look at older women with longer hair as not appropriate IF the hair doesn't look like a huge bomb exploded and the hair went every which way.

I don't look good with short hair either, but because my hair is naturally curly, I tend to keep it a bit longer.

The ONLY time i ever liked my hair was when it was cut like "Frankie" from the Sitcom, "Sisters" or Donna Mills from Knots Landing. I didn't need a perm and I felt like it was stylish.

For me, short short hair works best. Often, friends say they would like to wear their hair like mine, but, it would never work. Usually, their hair is same as it was 30/40 years ago. If their hair is long, none let it hang down their back. Such a view is plentiful at Wal-Mart, for instance. Difficult to imagine so many older women who have very long hair ...dull and drab in appearance. Invariably, it strings down their back. Grayish/brownish color seems most likely to appear drab even when freshly shampooed if allowed to be long and stringy. A woman who maintains gorgeous hair is also noticeable. :)

I don't think there's an age to cut your hair. Seems silly to me, kinda like the "Don't wear white after Labor day" old rules.

I had long hair for quite awhile, all the way down my back, then decided to cut it. Mine is fairly fine, totally limp. But also, there is a common meaning to the length of your hair, used in movies and possibly part of why women change the length of your hair - shorter hair is considered, generally, more professional, longer hair is more attractive, in general. It's interesting - every movie where they want to transform a female character from just an ordinary someone to the heroine, they start her with long hair, and cut it. In terms of watching the non-verbal cues I was giving to job interviewers, I decided a shorter haircut would help (female in a very male dominated profession).

For me, I look better with short hair, and it's easier to care for - I've got a short style, with a perm - I can shower at night, sleep on it wet, get up in the morning, brush it in the car, and it'll look decent. And I do. So that's what I've settled on. But I'm a lazy person in the mornings, so anything that needs work just won't work for me. With body, I think long hair would work.

You go girl!!!!!

Everyone should wear their hair, makeup and the clothes that make THEM feel good...and the heck with what anyone else says or thinks.

My daughter does the walk for life every year with hubby in memory of my mom, sister-in-law and wonderful FIL. My sister just started Kemo for her brain tumor, I told her I will buy her the wig(s) of her choice if she looses her hair, and she is considering LONG ones :)

I would like to request, anyone with long hair that chooses to cut it, find out if it could be donated to locks of love; The International Order of Rainbow for girls three years ago, donated about foot ball fields length of hair...getting it cut right there at their Grand Assembly.

I have read your post, Rockford, and many others here with great interest. At the moment the former CTV board is closed, so I can't check up on the pictures of you ladies. Kill me if I'm wrong, but I remember Rockford as having hair just short of shoulder length, framing her face nicely. Why did you put a question mark after my name, Rockford? No matter, I still love you.

I'm so sorry that I don't remember off-hand MaryHaze, in whom I delight for her no-nonsense attitude about defending her animals, and whom I remember (correctly or not) as being close to the northern border of New Hampshire. Janicelee I find extremely attractive for her views, and you know how that goes. Love their mind sufficiently and that's enough to transcend any lack of physical perfection. I remember being slightly confused by Tracian's pictures of Pixie (a nice-looking babe) and some dark-haired female that was impossibly glamorous. If she's the one who's squishy, I want to do a little squishing.

Did I mention my own attitude towards longer hair on older women? No? Well, I ought to have done, oughtn't I?

The gray/brown/stringy Wal-Mart women are a breed among themselves, and if they're happy, then ok...whatever. It does sound snobbish. I take pride in my long blonde hair. It's so versatile. I can make it straight or very curly or have a steam curler Miss America style. My hair is a big part of my identity, and I doubt that I'll ever have short hair by choice.

Since the tight curly styles went out, I've kept my hair short. Up until losing all of it due to Lupus, it was so thick and the really tight curls worked great for me. When my hair grew back, it is thin and straight as a board and has no body what so ever and won't hold even the slightest curl.

It's just easier and looks better on me when it's short. BUT, if the tight curly look ever comes back in, I'll be the first in line for a tight perm. Wash it, gel it, let it dry and pick it out. Works for me!

I wear it mostly up with clips divided in two parts (a customer showed me how, it really works) I pull the stringing things on both sides down, sometimes curl them. I have straight hair and just found out after all this time to take your long hair twist it to top of head at nite with one of those scrunchy's and walla..in the morning you have curls.. All you have to do is set the front.. my picture is on Kim's bucket photo's on Cttv board.
(actually the other day I was at home with my hair down and my 28 year old male friend said I should wear it down, I said I thought I looked too old he said No I look younger, what do I know??..now I wear it both) Yeh:basic44:

Checked you out and what a pretty lady you are. Love the color of your hair. I am so fair and have been blond all my life. Recently, my hairdresser added low lights to give my hair some depth. I do have some grey so I color about every 5 - 6 weeks. I got my hair cut a few weeks ago and I really like it. I've always had long hair and just got tired and wanted a change.

Hair is so personal and as a person is happy with their hair then that is all that counts.

Thank you for the compliment. I have cut my hair then cuss myself out since I have to curl it daily. Use to wear wigs and falls in the 60's when they were popular, so can alway go that route. Today they have some great styles. A girl at work must have had 20 wigs her style was different every day she came to work..They all looked cool.

Oh gosh, I have Lupus and my hair was thinning so I wore it long and in curls untill the nightmare.................

I had surgery and went into congestive heart failure and spent 3 months in the hospital waiting on a transplant (didn't get one) and my hair was trashed!

I started seeing my specialist who is a nutritionist also who put me on several supplements (special diet) including stress B Complex and I started using Nutri Ox shampoo and wow

my hair is so thick it's unreal and to top that it started growing back it's dark natural shade so...............I got it cut in a long version of Posh, having to use a high lift color to do my roots that used to be an easy grey color and everone loves it but it's hard to care for so I'm living in bad hair days because it grows so fast and color is so damaging..............heck being a woman!!:022:
