Texas inmate to die Tuesday, state's first execution in nearly 9 months
EXCERPT
Sonnier was convicted of killing his 27-year-old neighbor, Melody Flowers, and her 2-year-old son, who were found murdered in their Houston-area apartment. Flowers had been stabbed, beaten with a hammer and strangled. Her child was stabbed eight times.
At his trial, Sonnier's lawyers argued someone else was responsible for the murders.
"He's maintained his innocence and still does but it's been rejected by every court," Jani Maselli, Sonnier's lawyer, said Tuesday.
No last-day appeals to save his life were filed. Maselli said they would have been fruitless.
