Columbia (WLTX) -- The City of Columbia Police Department is investigating an incident where they say a young child was left in a daycare vehicle for about three hours.

Brick Lewis with the police department says the child is being treated at Palmetto Richland, and she is in stable condition.

No charges have yet been filed in the case, as officers say it is too early in the investigation to be sure.

Investigators say the child was left in the vehicle, which was owned by Conyers Early Learning Center on Colonial Drive, sometime between 8:30 a.m. or 8:45 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. to 12 noon.

Police say a City of Columbia employee who was working next door heard cries coming from the vehicle. That's when she went to daycare to alert daycare workers, who found the child inside the vehicle.

Columbia police was called to the scene, and they alerted the child's mother. The child was transported to the hospital.

"We certainly believe someone that is operating a daycare has a huge responsibility," says Capt. Thomas Dodson with City of Columbia Police.

For officials, that responsibility may have been neglected today. "As we all know, the temperatures are very high today... You throw in the humidity and you throw in a metal bus encased with glass and temperatures rise very quickly. We hear all the time temperatures can exceed 145 to 150 degrees," he says.

Officials say the doors were open on the bus, but an unattended child at daycare is still cause for concern. "The awareness falls back to the owners of that daycare, to make sure they're in compliance with common sense standards," says Dodson.

City of Columbia police are hoping their questions will lead to answers. Dodson asks, "Quite frankly, how does it happen? Someone forgot to take the child off the bus. Someone's responsible."

And lead to more parents questioning the people in charge of their child's safety. "Ask them on a frequent basis, are they following their own rules in addition to state regulations? Can't ask too many questions, sometimes you don't get a second chance," he says.

Investigators are still interviewing the driver of the vehicle.

What in the heck is wrong with these people that are supposed to be child care 'providers'? How do you misplace a 4 year old child?

Thankfully she is okay.

What in the world? Daycare providers and they leave that child alone for three hours....they need to loose their license, better yet, every parent needs to remove their child(ren) from their care.

Every bus that carries children must be checked before the driver leaves that vehicle. How scatter brained can someone be to forget to remove a child.

Do they take attendance? Good thing that worker heard the cries of that child.
