FW pastor arrested after dad overhears 'sexual' call
09:41 PM CDT on Thursday, June 19, 2008
FORT WORTH - A Fort Worth pastor was released on bond Thursday after he was arrested for allegedly sexually assaulting a 16-year-old girl he met at his church.
Pastor James "Jay" Virtue Robinson IV is the pastor at Southwood Baptist Church in Tarrant County. He is also at the center of a sexual assault scandal that might have never come to light if it were not for a phone call.
The father of the alleged victim told authorities he heard his teenage daughter having a sexually explicit phone conversation.
"That of course led to a lot of questions for her father," said Lt. Paul Henderson, Fort Worth Police Department.
Police said when her father questioned the teen over the conversation, the girl revealed a surprising man was on the other end of the call, Pastor Robinson.
According to the girl, they began a sexual relationship about two years ago when she was 16-years-old.
When the church council refused to fire Pastor Robinson, the victim's father went to the police. Pastor Robinson took a polygraph test.
"It was the determination of the polygraph examiner that [Pastor Robinson] was being untruthful in his answers," read a police affidavit.
"[Pastor Robinson] asked what would happen to him if the sex was all after the age of 17," the affidavit said.
At that point, his attorney ended the session.
But, as officers investigated the case, church leaders didn't waiver in their support of the pastor. Robinson has stayed in the pulpit throughout the three month criminal investigation.
According to police reports, church members who did not support the decision were escorted off church property.
But while church leaders may have put their faith in Robinson, investigators arrested him this week for the sexual assault of a minor.
"We don't arrest people because we just think something happened," Lt. Henderson said.
