BRIELLE — NJ Transit police are investigating a fatality in the area of the tracks between
the Manasquan and Point Pleasant rail stations.

NJ Transit spokesman Joe Dee said that at approximately 1:40 a.m. this morning, train No. 4785 traveling outbound from Long Branch to Bay Head on the NJ Coast Line struck a person on the tracks, who has not yet been identified, but is described as an adult female.

Dee said the engineer saw the woman on the tracks, sounded the horn and applied the emergency brake, but was unable to stop the train in time.

Dee said the woman was not near a station or crossing at the time she was struck.

The 20 passengers on the train at the time of the accident were taken by bus to their final destinations, Dee said. No injuries occurred among passengers.

The accident occurred at the end of service for the evening, and passengers of the final two trips of the night were taken by bus to their destinations.

Rail service for today is not affected.

No one has come forward for this woman yet. What a shame in a town like this everyone knows everyone and the summer people haven't invaded yet.
