"Tell us about a time you shared with someone or someone shared with you. For every story you share with us, we’ll donate a meal to a family in need through America’s Second Harvest.
Nothing is too big or too small. Whether you made dinner for a friend or helped out at your community soup kitchen, we’d like to hear your story.
Your stories will make it possible for families and friends across America to enjoy the simple pleasure of sitting down to a meal together."

The nicest thing I ever did was one I have always kept secret and to this day the giver does not know who did it. It was a young woman that worked for me. She told the story of her and her mother visitng the college she wanted to attend (a state school) and her mother breaking into tears realizing there was no way she could afford it. Her heart was broken. We had our own sons ..surely we were struggling to keep our head above water too but somehow we found the monies and it was done. We were only able to help her for that first semester but she went on to finish the four years...I feel we were part of getting her on her feet. I am so proud of her.

Thanks for the link. Will share my story with them and you.
There are 5 of us kids. It was time for our Christmas food drive at Sunday School. All of us had to take a canned good or box of mac & cheese - nothing extravagant.
The food was going to the "Neediest family" at our church.
We were so proud.....marched up to the box with our classes and gave them our food. Some family was going to be so happy & surprised tonight!!
~~~~
We got home from Sunday School and the doorbell rang. It was one of the men from the church and he was carrying in boxes of food.
The food was for us. WE were the "neediest family" in the church.
~~~~~~~~~~
The thing is....my mother didn't feel needy. She felt rich that she could go into her cupboard and get 5 cans of veggies for someone who really needed it. She'd grown up in an orphanage, where food was scarce, so to have 5 extra cans of veggies made her feel "rich".
I still cry when I think of my mom's face. :1187603408.CR.Mothe

What beautiful stories these are!!
Probably the nicest thing we've ever done was to drive to another state to see a friend who was struggling with her husband having been arrested, by her hand, for molesting her two daughters.
Penniless, and in so much pain it hurt to breathe, we knew we had to do something.
So, we drove to CT, and showed up the week before Christmas with a carload of presents for her and the kids, food from the local grocery store, and enough money to pay a couple of mortgage payments. We brought a tree, and an old friend dressed up as Santa for her one child who still believed. We were there for the weekend, and I took the girls out for haircuts, always the right choice for a woman in pain. Hubby and our son got holiday lights up, and we did general home repair of things she couldn't do herself. Like get the dryer fixed so it blew hot air.
2007 Christmas update:
She's a phlebotomist now, and works FT at the hospital. The little boy is 10, has a Big Brother, and is in counseling. The oldest daughter is married and building a new house. The other daughter graduates HS in June.
Dad got 15 years, and charges are pending in VT.
She has a BF, the house has been sold, cash, asking price, by the church behind her. She can stay until June, when she buys a condo.
Life is wonderful!!

Let me reword that. The church bought the house for her asking price, cash. They want it for a minister's home.
