DOUGLAS— Police continued to search yesterday for a Rhode Island man believed missing since early Thursday morning in woods in Douglas State Forest near Wallum Lake.

Brian J. Silva, 34, of Smithfield, R.I., was last seen around 2 a.m. Thursday by his girlfriend, Lindsay Lima, with whom he lives, according to police. Ms. Lima told police she located his vehicle parked off Shore Road around 6:30 a.m. Thursday, but could not find him.

Police then launched an extensive search Thursday for Mr. Silva. State police helicopters, dogs and search teams combed the area around Shore Road, which runs along Wallum Lake. State Department of Conservation and Recreation staff and Environmental Police also assisted with the search.

Police Chief Patrick T. Foley said yesterday teams searched for Mr. Foley into the early evening Thursday. He said he scaled back the scope of the search yesterday morning, reducing the search team to a state police rescue dog team and local police. He said Smithfield, R.I., police also are assisting in the search; that department has officially filed a missing persons report. Chief Foley said members of Mr. Silva’s family also were walking the shoreline yesterday morning. At the height of the search Thursday, more than 100 people were combing the densely wooded area. Dive teams made up of police and fire department personnel spent several hours in the lake searching for signs of Mr. Silva, Chief Foley said.

Chief Foley said Mr. Silva may have been disoriented, and said he suffered from a medical condition that may have caused him to wander away. He is being described by police as a white man, about 6 feet 1 inch tall, weighing around 210 pounds. He is bald with a goatee and blue eyes, and he was last seen wearing a white T-shirt and blue shorts. Anyone with information regarding his whereabouts should call police at (508) 476-3333 or the Smithfield, R.I., police at (401) 231-2500.

Shore Road is a dirt road that runs along Wallum Lake, which is part of Douglas State Forest. The forest covers about 6,000 acres and runs along the borders of Rhode Island and Connecticut. A state park near the search area includes swimming and recreational facilities.

Search under way for man missing near Douglas State Forest

By Steven Foskett Jr.

DOUGLAS— Police here have been searching all day for a 34-year-old Rhode Island man who apparently wandered off into the woods near Douglas State Forest.

Around 6 a.m., a Shore Road resident noticed an unfamiliar truck in the relatively remote area on Wallum Lake, Police Chief Patrick T. Foley said. Police checked and found the vehicle is registered to Brian J. Silva, 34, of Smithfield, R.I.

After speaking with relatives and Mr. Silva’s girlfriend, authorities were unable to determine the man’s whereabouts and launched a search in the vicinity.

Local, state and environmental police, along with officials from the state Department of Conservation and Recreation, have been combing the woods and searching the lake throughout the day.

It is curious that one article mentions Ms. Lima said she found his truck but no signs of him and the other states a Shore Road resident noticed the truck.
