This is wrong on so many levels I'm not even sure where to start. Monkeys, aren't domestic animals. I love my dog, but dogs have been living and working in partnership with humans for for thousands of years. Stealing a monkey from the wild, before it is likely old enough to be weaned quite frankly strikes me as animal cruelty.
I won't pretend that on some level the dogs I have owned may not have been in some way been substituting for the children I never had, and I will admit to refering to them as my babies. Although, I never thought of feeding them at the table, or dressing them up in outfits. Beagles have their furry dignity, and trying to dress them up would be an embarassment to both of us. I adore the fact that I'm sharing my life with an animal that lives comfortably with humans, yet is unquestionably different in many charming and fascinating ways. The years I have spent trying to figure out the canine mind have given me great pleasure, I hope the dogs, have had as much trying to figure out the human mind. Whatever I have wanted from a dog it isn't a little baby who will never grow up, my dog gives me unconditional love but he gives it to me in his own way, he is still a dog and not a little baby who will never grow up. He is what he is and I love him for that, I love him for being a dog and not for trying to be something he can't be.
I'll climb down from my soapbox now, and take my dog out for a quick game of fetch, but I'm going to say it again this just ain't right.

I have to agree with you on this, pretty sick.. the video I saw on the site shows that problems definitely arose as the monkey grew up. I don't know how any intelligent adult could think a wild animal could substitute for a child. It takes all kinds I guess.
As far as dressing dogs, mine does wear sweaters, snow suits and the occasional jean jacket, LOL.. but I know she's a dog and she doesn't seem to mind.

I may have been a little over the top on the dog outfits, I will confess to trying to get reindog antlers on my Trey for Xmas one year. We did come to an understanding on it though, I don't try to put antlers on him, and he doesn't indicate his displeasure by peeing on the carpet. As with most relationships, ours is a series of compromises.

Monkeys have canine teeth and they do go thru the terrible 'teen' years in their own way. They do bite, they do throw things, can behave very badly and do reach sexual maturity with all it entails. Sadly, most of them end up somewhere other than in the home that bought them.
It is outrageous that anyone would compare them to a human child in any real way.
It is also a cruelty to take baby monkeys in the wild and it is a well know fact that this involves killing the mother.
Taking those born in captivity is another cruelty. They are grieved by the mother who can spend many days looking for them. They feel real sadness at the loss. They are an animal that lives in a group and losing a member is a serious emotional issue for them.
I am so sick and tired of the selfish who for a few dollars to satisfy their temporary lust for that which they do not have, will seek out those who make money in this trade. In many parts of the country there are strict laws regarding the keeping of monkeys and many inspections to make sure they have the room to exercise and are allowed the dignity to be animals. I wish more states would enact the restrictions and those who earn money by furthering cruelty would be put out of business, not because of lack of idiots who want them because you can never stop the stupid, but because no state will tolerate the cruelty.

I was horrified watching Primetime last night. Removing their teeth??? Cutting off their fingers??? That is sick & should be ILLEGAL. As for taking the babies from their mothers - just plain evil. Primates mourn the loss of an offspring. How can someone cause the poor mothers so much pain? As usual, it's all about the almighty dollar.
Besides all that, who the HELL wants a 2 year old for the rest of their lives??? Are you friggin kidding me? No thanks, I'll pass.

A hundred years ago when we lived in Phoenix, our friends had a monkey and they lived in a small apartment. I don't know what kind it was or anything, but I know it use to throw poop...gross!

That's nasty. Why would anyone want that?? I will admit that they're cute as heck, and it would be fun to play with one & have it ride around on your shoulder & all that, but that would only be fun for like a day. Or until they threw poop at me. Whichever came first. Then I'd be over it.

It's estimated there are 15,000 monkeys living with humans as pets or surrogate children in the United States.
Surrogate children! :rolleye0001:
What they are doing is cruel. They should be arrested for cruelty to animals not making headlines as if what they are doing is fine. Treating them like they are babies? There are so many babies/children that need adoption, why not do that.

I must say, the Primetime segment they had on did not glorify having monkeys as pets. Actually, it was mostly the opposite. They showed injuries caused by pet monkeys (which were horrible), they went to a rescue for ex-pet monkeys, and they told about the horrible things people do to them. They even showed video of someone taking a baby from its mother. I was actually pleased they covered the story honestly and not in a "cute" way.

I didn't watch Primetime, but to me that article posted somehow was glorifiying keeping monkeys as babies.
I'm happy to hear it was shown as a dangerous pet to have. Besides all the diseases, their teeth are sharper than a dogs, which is why some removed them. It's cruel and I believe it is illegal to own a monkey. They cannot be domesticated.

Yeah they showed why it isn't such a good idea to get a monkey. Even my friends that had the monkey said he could be really mean. So let's see; he mean and he throw's poop. Who would want that?

I always say I want a monkey, but I'd never own one. They don't belong in a domesticated lifestyle. But I don't like the fact they are tested on either.:frown: If I had a hundred acres & millions of dollars, I would take in newly unwanted ones though just because I know I'd make sure they were safe and taken care of. (I'd have a dog, cat, bird, monkey area and many more)

When my dad was younger one of their neighbors had a monkey. They went somewhere one day and left him in the car and it died from heat.
But they also had an alligator too. The dad had some job where he traveled so he'd bring exotic animals home.

People are stupid.
There was a family here in town that had an alligator but a neighbor complained and there was a huge lawsuit.
There had never been any accidents with it but the neighbors kick-a-poo "dog" wandered into the yard and the neighbor freaked even though it didn't even touch the dog. I think they actually ended up moving 8 miles out of the city and kept it.
