Deschutes County Sheriff's Search and Rescue and U.S. Forest Service crews were scouring the Deschutes River and its banks late Sunday in the area of Benham Falls, southwest of Bend, after a Bend man's bicycle and pickup truck left in the area prompted concern that he might be lost in or near the river.
The missing-person case involving Bend resident Lynn McDonald began after his pickup was found Sunday near the Benham Falls east trailhead, according to a news release from sheriff's Lt. Kevin Dizney and Capt. Marc Mills.
A bicycle with McDonald's ID was found about a half-mile down from the trailhead on a walking/biking trail, the officer said.
The pickup was believed to have been parking at the trailhead overnight, and the bike was spotted around 8 a.m. Sunday and again in the late afternoon by a Forest Service employee patrolling the area.
Sheriff's detectives are trying to determine McDonald's actions, Dizney and Mills said, adding that it's believed McDonald went to the area alone, and that it's known if he entered the water or became lost on the ground in the area.
If the ground and water search ongoing Sunday night was unsuccessful, Dizney and Mills said the search will resume in the morning.
As a result, they said, it will be necessary to close the area to the public for search operations. The area will be closed to vehicle and pedestrian traffic from Benham Falls east at the parking lot to the trailhead, as accessed from Lava Butte, downstream to aspen Camp, including Dillon Falls and Slough Camp. Aspen Flat will remain open from there north to Bend, but several access points off Forest Service Road 41 will remain closed until the search concludes.
Anyone with information on McDonald's whereabouts or recent activities, or personal observations near Benham Falls that could assist in the search, was asked to contact the sheriff's office detective's division at (541) 617-3393.
Just over a month ago, the body of a possibly suicidal Bend man, David Kolbus, 59, was found downstream from Benham Falls after eight hours of searching.
And last Wednesday, Lisa Braughton, 48, of Silver Lake, Ore., drowned when the raft she was riding with a family member flipped while going over rapids at Pringle Falls, west of La Pine.
