Police fear missing physician in danger
Sean Dugas • sdugas@pnj.com • July 10, 2008
Dr. Kirk M. Smith, 67, of Pensacola was last seen about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
Smith — a longtime fixture on the "Doctor Make Me Beautiful" show — canceled all his upcoming appointments on Monday.
He also told his secretary that this week would be her last week of work.
"Based on his actions just prior to his disappearance, we believe he may be in danger," Pensacola Assistant Police Chief Chip Simmons said. "Some comments he made indicated an ending of some kind."
Police believe Smith, who lives in the 4400 block of Devereux Drive off Scenic Highway, left his home on foot because he left behind his keys and cell phone.
The Escambia County sheriff's helicopter assisted in the search about 1 p.m. Wednesday in an area off Scenic Highway but did not locate Smith, Simmons said.
Smith is described as a white male, 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing about 180 pounds. He has gray hair and hazel eyes.
Bob Burk, general manager of BLAB-TV, said he was baffled by Smith's disappearance.
"He was always upbeat as long as I've known him," Burk said. "He was the nicest, soft-spoken man that you'd ever hope to meet."
Anyone with information about Smith's whereabouts is asked to contact Detective Rebekah Gardner at 435-1980 or the Pensacola Police Department at 435-1900.

Yeah - that was front page this morning, and last evening. He's done wonders on the ladies around here but maybe he just got burnt out. It happens to everyone. Unfortunately, it sounds like a suicide to me.

I read on pnj.com, the comments section, something about a divorce. Maybe he needed to get away. I hope he is safe.

Yes unfortunately he is in a divorce from what I see on public records. It also appears as though he's had money problems for some time, despite his prominence as a plastic surgeon. He's had a couple malpractice suits here in Pensacola and some civil indebtedness and a foreclosure. Life's rough sometimes but damn, just make lemonade out of the lemons.

Quelfemme - I don't believe anybody was "judging" or "criticizing" Dr. Smith. He is well respected in this community. I was simply giving information that is already public knowledge

i understand it is public information, but the comment about damn make lemonade out of lemons i feel was uncalled for. you have no idea what he is going through and why he decided to do what he did...it offends me because he is my father and things like that tend to hurt the loved ones trying to deal with this type of situation. maybe you ought to think more about how comments written can hurt or offend loved ones

Dr. Kirk M. Smith, 67, of Pensacola was last seen about 12:30 p.m. Tuesday.
“We understand he’s contacted a family member,” said Chip Simmons, Pensacola Police Department assistant police chief. “He will remain on the missing persons and endangered list until a law enforcement agency can verify that he’s OK.”
Simmons said he knows Smith is not in town, but did not know his whereabouts.
“There is no indication that he is in distress,” Simmons said.
Smith is described as a white male, 5 feet 9 inches tall, weighing about 180 pounds. He has gray hair and hazel eyes.
Anyone with information about Smith’s whereabouts is asked to contact Detective Rebekah Gardner at 425-1980 or the Pensacola Police Department at 435-1900.
