Talk about a happy ending.
Three weeks ago, lightning scared Mia, a Great Pyrenees, from her Colfax home while her owner was out of town.
Days of frantic searching by John Mathews, son of the dog's owner, who had been caring for the animal, failed to turn up Mia. The dog was reported missing to animal control officials, said Dena Erwin, Placer County's sheriff's public information officer.
Then came the unexpected.
Boaters on Rollins Lake in Colfax on Friday reported seeing a large white dog near the shoreline but were unable to get close to the lake's rocky edge, she said.
On Saturday, sheriff's deputies Mark Weisman and Carol Walsh received two reports of a dog in distress on the shore as they launched their boat for a day of routine patrolling on the lake, Erwin said.
They quickly found Mia, who was attempting to hide behind a large rock. The dog was frightened, injured, exhausted and hungry, barely able to crawl because her hind paws were so bloodied.
As Walsh approached the dog, she confirmed it was Mia, whose collar reads "Love Me Tender."
Several boaters gave the deputies food to help lure Mia. One of the deputies held the boat steady in the wake-roughened water while the other lifted Mia into the boat.
Nevada County Animal Control was notified, and an officer and Mathews met deputies at the Long Ravine boat ramp.
Mathews said he and his family are relieved and excited that Mia was found.
"At first I didn't think it could possibly be her," Mathews stated in a news release.
Mia received medical attention and is recovering at home with her family.

It's heart warming to know people care.
