Authorities Saturday were looking for a missing Arizona man who last called his family from an Atwater convenience store Wednesday and whose car was found abandoned Friday in San Joaquin County, according to the Merced County Sheriff's Department.
Gregory Beach, 62, was driving from his home in Tempe, Ariz., to Yuba City in Sutter County. He called relatives in Yuba City from a pay phone about 5 p.m. Wednesday from the Atwater Circle K at 1021 Shaffer Road, said deputy Tom Mac-Kenzie, a Merced County sheriff's spokesman.
Beach's family has not heard from him since then. MacKenzie said Beach's family is concerned about his disappearance, because Beach has medical conditions that cause him to become "extremely delusional" without medication.
Sheriff's officials described Beach as a white man, 6 feet 1 inch tall, 180 pounds, with blue eyes and gray hair. He was driving a 2001 four-door Isuzu with Arizona license plate number AAX8296.
MacKenzie said Beach's car was found Friday along Highway 99 near East Lathrop Road, just north of Manteca. Nearby residents told authorities they saw a man fitting Beach's description walking away from the car Wednesday. San Joaquin County sheriff's deputies searched the area for Beach, but did not find him.
The Merced County Sheriff's Department considers Beach a missing person at risk and asks anyone with information regarding his whereabouts to call the nearest law enforcement agency or the Merced County Sheriff's Department at 385-7444.
