I too, keep holding on to the hope that Melinda just gave him to someone, and you're completely right, so many forgotten, and so many unknown...their poor families, the heartache just never ends...

Some days I can believe that but other days I fear the worst.

I do believe that whatever she did with him she never told another soul.
Cara passed a poly so I don't really think she knows anything about the actual disappearance. If anyone knows anything I think it coud be the Grandmother and then only because she suspects not because Melinda told her.

This little boy has found his way into so many hearts and so many care about him.
I pray every night tht he is safe and warm and that he will be returned to his family . I do know that if he is gone from this earth in is flying with the angels.

It would be very easy for someone to hide a small child Trenton's age when he went missing, even when LE was out searching for him everywhere and following up on leads to everyone Melinda knew. The problem I think would be when he gets to school age but by then he might not be recognized unless someone did an age progression photo on him. I just don't think Melinda harmed him.

I think if she did harm it it was an accident or else she just snapped with all the pressure mounting. There was the fake e mail and the BOA theft thing over her head. It is very unfortunate she did not take the help she needed when she had the chance.

The event, called "Beacon of Hope for the Missing," will feature 32 groups ranging from law-enforcement agencies to the family of missing Leesburg boy Trenton Duckett. Attendees can have their fingerprints taken, see area lawmakers and law-enforcement officials, give blood, and learn about a variety of safety issues.

Lawmakers will highlight a proposed law set to be introduced in the spring session of the state Legislature that requires law-enforcement agencies to adopt written procedures for handling missing-persons cases and obtain DNA samples of people missing for more than 90 days, among other things.

The Kesse's have been so supportive of the Ducketts. It was very nice of them to ask Trenton's family to participate.

Normalcy is something Duckett longs for. The son of a convicted killer and the father of a missing toddler, Duckett has been thrust into the media spotlight since he himself was a toddler. His father, James Duckett, was convicted for the 1987 murder of 11-year-old Theresa McAbee. James Duckett was on on-duty Mascotte police officer at the time of the murder. He is now on Florida's Death Row. Josh was only 18 months old at the time.

Fast forward 19 years. Duckett, now a father himself, is going through a nasty divorce and custody battle with Melinda Eubank Duckett, the mother of his 2-year-old son Trenton. He is facing criminal charges stemming from alleged e-mailed threats to Melinda Duckett and he has temporarily lost all custody rights to his son.

Then there's a knock at his door in the late evening on Aug. 27, 2006. It's the police. Trenton is missing and Josh is the prime suspect. Early into the investigation, Josh Duckett is cleared, and the focus turns to Trenton's mother. Less than two weeks after Melinda Duckett reported her son missing, she killed herself using her grandfather's shotgun at his home in The Villages.

Duckett case

There has been no sign of Trenton since he was last seen with his mother the day before he was reported missing. Duckett stayed out of the spotlight in the first few days following the disappearance, but then embraced the media. He talked to numerous media entities including CNN's Nancy Grace. Melinda Duckett also was a guest on the show, she killed herself just hours before a fist-pounding interview with Grace grilling Melinda Duckett was set to air.

Duckett, his mom Carla Massero and family friend Laurie Konnerth formed Team Trenton, and like the Kesses, they too formed a Web site and tip line. They held numerous fundraising events including a charity football game and booths at local festivals. They also had shirts and bracelets made and those were sold to help fund the efforts to find Trenton.

Massero opened a flower shop in downtown Leesburg and fliers of Trenton are posted on the windows and near the cash register. Keeping busy helps, she said. Dreaming also helps her cope. Over the past several months, Massero has had a recurring dream about finding Trenton. The house is the same in the dream and each time Trenton is playing on a blue and white swing set.

"Maybe this is God's way of letting me know Trenton is OK," she said choking back tears.

Massero said knowing Melinda Duckett as well as she did also gives her hope.

"I don't believe in my heart that Melinda killed Trenton," she said. "Until I have proof, I'm going to stick with my gut feeling."

Duckett also made mention of the "club," as Kesse did. Many of these families look to each other for support, Duckett said.

"It's a group that you never want to be a part of, but once you are, you don't ever want to leave it."

POSTED: 7:37 pm EST February 25, 2008
UPDATED: 8:01 am EST February 26, 2008

ORLANDO, Fla. -- An Orlando woman said she has visions about two big local missing person cases -- information that could help solve the cases.

"I will see images. I will hear a voice," Maggie Giono said.

Giono said she can channel spirits, talk with the dead and see into the future through meditation.

grew up with that gift. I've seen accidents before they happen, plane crashes before they happen," Giono said.

Giono said sometimes it can be very hard to know what to do with the information she sees.

She struggles to make sense of her visions, but hopes they can help with investigations that, to this day, baffle detectives -- cases like missing Orlando woman Jennifer Kesse and missing Lake County toddler Trenton Duckett.

"It's time for me to help bring closure with the gift I have to families like the Kesses and Trenton Duckett's family," Giono said.

Since 2-year-old Trenton Duckett disappeared from his mother's Leesburg apartment in August of 2006, Giono said the little boy has been talking to her, trying to lead her to him.

"Trenton has told us a lot of things. We've had many readings with Trenton," Giono said.

Those readings guided her across hundreds of miles in Lake County on her own time -- eventually leading her to Emeralda Marsh off county Road 452.

"These sheds are like what I saw," she said. "It was after many days of digging and searching that we actually found a location that had absolutely every landmark."

Giono called investigators, so they went with it, combing the private property for two days hoping this was the break in the case they needed.

"The tip said, he's here, right at this specific location," Lt. Robert Hicks of the Leesburg Police Department said.

Giono's remains convinced Trenton's body was there at one point.

"It's my feeling he's been put in the trunk of a car and moved," Giono said.

Leesburg police, like most departments in Central Florida, said they've never paid a psychic to help solve a crime.

"We really don't put much faith into them," Josh Duckett, Trenton's father, said.

Duckett said he's been let down by too many psychic tips to be a believer.

"If they were seeing things, and they could tell what happened and where he's at, then obviously, he'd be home now, he wouldn't still be missing," Duckett said.

Father Drew Kesse said not one of the many psychics that has contacted them has been able to help find his daughter, Jennifer.

She's been missing since January 2006.

Police believe Jennifer left her apartment for work and someone abducted her between her home and her car.

Giono said she has seen a different story.

"I believe she was abducted at the Mobile gas station at Kirkman and L.B. McLeod," Giono said. "That someone climbed in the back seat of her car and held a knife to her throat."

Giono said she believes Jennifer Kesse is in a waste management manhole off L.B. McLeod Road.

An Orlando police detective said they have searched waste management there based on Giono's tip.

They have also drained a retention pond, but they only found chicken bones and a lot of sludge.

They said they are willing to search this area with new concrete evidence that Jennifer Kesse is actually there.

Giono said she cannot change skeptics' minds that wonder how she can possibly be seeing what happened to Trenton and Jennifer when they're still missing. She said it is not her intention to change skeptics’ minds.

For desperate family members, it doesn't matter if police or a psychic solves it.

"We're just looking for Jennifer, whoever can bring her home," Drew Kesse said.

"The main thing is closure," Duckett said.

Giono said she is just the channel and the medium.

There was an article about this case on CNN today. They are investigating the porn videos that they have but did not pursue. They are now going back and taking a look at the person who posted these on a web site. They have a feeling that someone videoed those tapes and could possibly be involved or know someone that could have taken Trenton. Let's pray that they find this adorable little boy soon! The investigators have not forgotten him and said they will do everything within their power to find him.

Lawsuit against Nancy Grace, CNN in connection with woman's suicide moves ahead

OCALA, Fla. — A federal judge has refused to dismiss a lawsuit that claims CNN's Nancy Grace pushed the mother of a missing toddler to suicide through aggressive questioning.

CNN and Grace argued the wrongful death lawsuit brought by Melinda Duckett's family would "severely chill" journalists' coverage of missing-persons cases. But U.S. District Judge William Terrell Hodges on Thursday denied their motion to dismiss the lawsuit.

Duckett, 21, was on Grace's show after her son Trenton went missing from her apartment in August 2006. Grace grilled the woman, accusing her of hiding something because Duckett did not take a lie-detector test and answered vaguely regarding her whereabouts.

Duckett fatally shot herself before the network aired the pretaped interview.

The family claims Grace's intense questioning caused severe emotional distress that led to the suicide. The lawsuit also claims that the decision to air the interview after her suicide caused the family to suffer severe emotional distress and media and public harassment. They are seeking a jury trial, unspecified damages more than $15,000 and punitive damages.

Duckett family attorney Jay Paul Deratany said attorneys will begin taking testimony.

"There is more information out there to be gleaned," said Deratany. "If Melinda had any information, Nancy Grace stopped the investigation in its track."

Police have said Duckett is the only suspect in her son's disappearance.

A message left Friday for an attorney representing Grace and CNN were not immediately returned.

This is the transcript to the show that was taped on 9/7/06 but aired on 9/8/06.

On 9/8, Melinda contacted a local radio station pretending to be her sister and asking people to watch NG that evening. She was outed by one of the radio personalities as being Melinda and not her sister.

Later that day her grandparents went to lunch. Just before they arrived home Melinda put a shotgun to her chin and committed suicide in a closet in their home. This was approximately 3 pm. NG's show aired at 8 pm.

MILLARD K. IVES

Staff Writer

LEESBURG -- Two years after his disappearance, sightings continue.

Tips still pour in -- even as hope of finding him alive fade. A lawsuit against the television anchor who some fault for the suicide of the boy's mother just got another boost. The lead detective in the case has retired.

And questions surrounding what happened to 2-year-old Trenton Duckett persist.

"We're still looking for that one major break, that one big lead," said Leesburg police Maj. Steve Rockefeller, who was a captain when the toddler disappeared on Aug. 27, 2006.

A walk into the Leesburg Police Department seems to confirm their continued effort. Posters of Trenton still hang on the building's front door.

Deep inside is a medium-sized office, called the Duckett Room. It is crammed with what looks like thousands of files on the case. They include interviews with his mother, Melinda Duckett, discussions with friends and family, talks with witnesses, Florida Department of Law Enforcement documents and a timeline drawing of the mother's whereabouts in days leading to the disappearance -- a sheet that spreads across the entire back wall.

Then there are the dozen black binders filled with the 927 leads detectives had received on the case by Friday -- when Detective Sgt. Greg Woodworth took time to thumb through them on Friday.

"We haven't given up," he said.

Melinda Duckett told police said she had been looking at television with friends at home when her son disappeared from his bedroom. The abduction quickly grew into a national story as questions began to surface about the role she might have played in the disappearance. The story became more intriguing still with the news that Duckett and her estranged husband, Josh Duckett, disagreed about almost everything.

Police said the mother had thrown away several items related to her son, including photos, clothes, toys and a sonogram image.

Those questions quickly turned into suspicions after Duckett took her own life after being grilled by CNN Headline News talk-show host Nancy Grace.

Melinda's death was a major blow to the case, leaving some to wonder if the only lead to Trenton's location had vanished.

However, Leesburg police have basically ruled out two theories. In an interview last week, Rockefeller said there's no evidence Trenton was abducted or that the mother passed him off to someone.

But Rockefeller stopped short of saying they are sure Melinda Duckett killed Trenton, adding there's no evidence that the toddler was murdered. He seemed confident that the mother was not being honest about what happened to Trenton, citing reports of witnesses not seeing her with the child on the day of his disappearance -- at times she said she was.

"We would charge her with his disappearance," said Rockefeller, when asked if Melinda would be in jail if she were still alive.

Marion County investigation

The search for Trenton also ran through Marion County in the Ocala National Forest. At one point, officials were considering killing alligators in their search for a possible body after receiving leads that Melinda had been seen near lakes there.

The Marion County Sheriff's Office has somewhat conflicting theories on the case. Based on leads Marion sheriff's investigators have, Maj. Chris Blair said Friday he believes Melinda Duckett handed off the child to another person.

If alive, Trenton would be 4 years old. Blair hopes the child's name and picture pops up soon if he enrolls in school.

"It's a theory we will continue to work on," said Blair. "We're hoping for the best."

He added new DNA technology also may assist in finding Trenton.

The lawsuit

Lawyers for Melinda Duckett's estate are suing Grace and the network in a wrongful-death lawsuit, accusing them of pushing her to suicide. A judge earlier this month refused to throw the case out.

Rockefeller, who saw the interview, admits he was hoping to maybe find out something that Duckett had not told detectives during questioning.

"There was nothing we got from it," Rockefeller said.

The father's viewpoint

Josh Duckett and his family celebrated his son's third birthday last year and held a candlelight vigil. He is holding out hope Trenton is still alive. Rockefeller said finding Trenton doesn't seem likely at this point, considering the young child has been missing for this long.

"The more time that goes by, the more concern there is with his safety," Rockefeller said.

But Rockefeller added detectives haven't given up either. They occasionally meet with the FDLE on the case.

"Our primary focus still is to bring him home."

Well baby boy, it's been two years. Two long years. You have captured the hearts of thousands who think of you every day and they will never stop until you are home. We love you Trenton and we are waiting for you.

The 911 call came in at 9:19 pm 8/27/06. I hope that you all can share a moment of silence at that time remembering that Trenton is still out there and needs to be found.

2-year anniversary for missing boy

LAKE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35, Orlando) -- It has been exactly two years since Trenton Duckett went missing. The boy was originally reported missing by his mother, Melinda, around 9 p.m. on August 27, 2006 from his bed inside his mother’s Leesburg apartment.

The toddler’s 4th birthday was earlier this month on August 10.

I never got to meet you, little man, but I've gotten to know someone who loves you very much. And through that person I've learned about how special you are. I've learned that you are loved beyond words by your Daddy and Nana. I've learned that they never stop thinking of you. They watch the faces in the crowd just for you. They search the world for you. They hold their breath everytime a body is found...and slowly release it when it isn't you. They hurt for other families that have lost someone because it reminds them of how they ache for you. You are loved and missed and will not be forgotten nor given up on. You impacted so many lives with your sweet smile. May you only know joy and peace. And may you soon be home.

LEESBURG, Fla. -- A new age-enhanced photo of Trenton Duckett, a 4-year-old Central Florida boy who has been missing for more than two years, was released on Tuesday as investigators continue to seek clues in the boy's disappearance.

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, working with the Duckett family, Team Adam and the Leesburg Police Department, developed an age-progression photograph of Trenton as he may now appear.

Trenton turned 4 years old last month and is now more than twice his age from the time he disappeared. Leesburg police said it's important for the public to know that Trenton no longer looks like a toddler but instead a boy near school age.

Duckett relatives get date in court

OCALA -- Relatives of Melinda Duckett who blame cable-TV talk-show host Nancy Grace for pushing their daughter to suicide two years ago are finally scheduled to get their day with her in federal court -- in 2010.

Federal-court documents show the wrongful-death trial is tentatively scheduled for July 2010.

Duckett, 21, shot herself in her grandparents' home in The Villages on Sept. 8, 2006, the day that her taped interview was to air on Grace's nightly program on CNN. Grace, a former prosecutor, had grilled the young mother about her missing 2-year-old son, Trenton, and accused Duckett of hiding information from investigators.

Leesburg police later labeled Duckett as the only suspect in the boy's disappearance.

Jerry and Beth Eubank, Melinda Duckett's adoptive parents, contend that the caustic commentator's aggressive style caused emotional distress that led Duckett to kill herself and prevented police from learning about Trenton's fate. Lawyers for the Eubankses and for Melinda Duckett's estate say the young woman was ambushed by Grace.

Lawyers for Grace and CNN say Grace asked tough questions but is not responsible for the suicide. They argue that Grace's focus was the safe return of the boy.

Earlier this year, senior U.S. District Court Judge William Terrell Hodges ruled against a motion by Grace and the cable-news network, which had sought to have the case thrown out. According to court records, federal Magistrate Gary R. Jones also set May 31, 2010, as the deadline for mediation of the case.

Duckett reported her son missing from his bed in her apartment on Aug. 27, 2006.

CNN's Nancy Grace wants Melinda Duckett records

Lawyers for CNN and the network's TV talk-show personality Nancy Grace want a federal judge to order a Lake County mental-health facility to turn over its treatment records of Melinda Duckett, the mother of missing toddler Trenton Duckett.

In documents filed on New Year's Eve, the lawyers contend Duckett's mental-health history is relevant to her family's wrongful-death lawsuit which accuses Grace and her cable show of "intentionally inflicting emotional distress" on the distraught mother, 21.

Officials for Lifestream Behavioral Center in Leesburg, which had previously treated Duckett, told the cable network's lawyers last month that they would not honor a deposition subpeona but would follow a judge's order.

Duckett shot herself in her grandparents' home in The Villages on Sept. 8, 2006, the day that Grace planned to air an interview she had taped with her. CNN Lawyers Request Melinda Duckett's Mental Health Records
Duckett Committed Suicide After Accused Of Killing Son Trenton

http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/28474956/

updated 7:17 a.m. ET Jan. 5, 2009

LEESBURG, Fla. - Lawyers for CNN's Nancy Grace asked a federal judge on Friday to order a Lake County mental health facility to turn over its treatment records of Melinda Duckett.

She is the mother of missing toddler Trenton Duckett.

In a document filed on New Year's Eve, lawyers claimed Duckett's mental health history is relevant to the family's wrongful death lawsuit.

It claimed that Grace and her show intentionally inflicted emotional distress on the 21-year-old mother.

Duckett shot herself in her grandparent's home.

Investigators said they consider her the suspect in the disappearance of her son.

Trenton was reported missing 860 days ago. There are still tips coming into the Leesburg Police Department, but the hot line number on

HelpFindTrenton.com

is no longer in service.

The lead detective said on Friday that there have been about 900 tips called in since the boy's disappearance in August 2006.

Despite a massive nationwide search, he has not been found.

The case was overshadowed for much of the summer by the disappearance of Caylee Anthony. Even the child's father, Joshua Duckett, said he wanted to help find Caylee.

Leesburg Police Department Sgt. Gregg Woodworth said the number of tips dropped, but the case is, by no means, something they have forgotten about. He said his department in Lake County remains actively working on it.

Meanwhile, the September 2006 suicide of Trenton's mother remains a major obstacle.

Melinda Duckett shot herself the same day her interview with CNN's Nancy Grace was set to air.

Her family is now embattled with the network in a lawsuit after saying the interview went too far and pushed her over the edge.

Leesburg detectives said they want anyone with any information to keep calling the police department directly.

CNN requests Duckett's mental records

OCALA -- In their latest effort to refute information contained in a wrongful death lawsuit filed by the family of Melinda Duckett, lawyers for CNN have asked a federal judge to order a Leesburg mental-health facility to turn over treatment records for the mother of missing toddler Trenton Duckett.

In a motion filed in the federal courthouse in Ocala on Wednesday, the cable network's lawyers argue that Duckett's mental-health history is relevant to the lawsuit -- and they want the records turned over by Jan. 12.

Duckett committed suicide shortly after being grilled by CNN's Nancy Grace about Duckett's possible participation in her son's disappearance -- sparking the family's lawsuit against CNN.

The family's lawsuit contends Grace "intentionally inflicted emotional distress" on the 21-year-old mother. CNN wants related records from LifeStream Behavioral Center, which had treated Duckett.

According to court records, CNN's motion was filed after center told the cable network's lawyers they would not honor a subpoena ordering release of the mental-health treatment records, but rather would follow a judge's order to produce the requested records.

Duckett reported her son missing from his bed in her Leesburg apartment on Aug. 27, 2006. But she soon became the chief suspect in the case. She shot herself in her grandparents' home in The Villages shortly after she was grilled by Grace about possible involvement in her son's abduction.

Trenton has yet to be found.

Lawyers won't block release of Melinda Duckett's mental-health records

Stephen Hudak | Sentinel Staff Writer

Lawyers suing CNN and Nancy Grace on behalf of Melinda Duckett's estate will not object to the release of the young mother's psychiatric records.

The mental-health documents could be relevant to the estate's wrongful-death claim against the cable giant and Grace, a network personality whose grilling interview of Duckett preceded the 21-year-old mother's suicide in 2006, lawyer Kara Skorupa told the Orlando Sentinel on Monday.

The network asked a federal judge Dec. 31 to force LifeStream Behavioral Center to surrender records detailing its treatment of Duckett, mother of missing Leesburg toddler Trenton Duckett. The Leesburg mental-health center has refused to honor a defense subpeona.

After the suicide, Leesburg police labeled Melinda Duckett as the prime suspect in her son's sudden disappearance. She reported him missing from the bedroom of their Leesburg apartment Aug. 27, 2006.

Duckett shot herself at her grandparents' home in The Villages in September 2006 -- the day the network aired Grace's taped interview with her.

Skorupa, a South Florida lawyer hired to prosecute the estate's claims, also dismissed reports that CNN and Grace were seeking amateur pornographic videos of Melinda Duckett in their defense of the lawsuit, which also accuses them of "intentional infliction of emotional distress."

Skorupa said she gave the sexually explicit videos to law-enforcement officers investigating Trenton's disappearance.

"I don't think they're relevant to what we claim CNN and Nancy Grace did to Mindy," Skorupa said in an interview.

A Washington-based lawyer for CNN and Grace did not return a call seeking comment.

The lawsuit, filed on behalf of the estate and Melinda Duckett's adoptive parents, William "Jerry" and Beth Eubank of New York, accuses CNN and Grace of pushing Duckett to suicide with an aggressive interview that Skorupa characterized as an "ambush."

Last year, senior U.S. District Court Judge William Terrell Hodges ruled against a motion by the cable-news network and Grace, who were seeking to have the case thrown out. They contend Grace is not responsible for the suicide and that Grace's focus was Trenton's safe return.

The trial is tentatively set for July 2010 in federal court in Ocala.

Trenton's father, Joshua Duckett, who was estranged from Melinda Duckett, was dropped as a defendant in the lawsuit after a magistrate determined her family could not establish a claim against him.

Trenton Duckett (HelpFindTrenton.com)
Just a month ago, the tiny remains of 2-year-old Caylee Anthony were discovered near the Anthony home in a wooded area. Unlike Caylee, little Trenton Duckett, who disappeared over 2 years ago has never been found.

Authorities speculated that 2-year-old Trenton, may have been missing for two full days before he was reported gone. Melinda claimed she had put Trenton to sleep in his bedroom and invited two friends over to watch movies. After a couple of hours, she stated she went to check on Trenton and he was gone.

On the day Trenton went missing, Melinda had told authorities she and Trenton had deiven to the Ocala National Forest to find a shooting range and that she got lost, and wound up driving in circles for hours. This conflicts with tips that place Melinda in Leesburg at 8:00 AM and walking into her apartment alone, without Trenton, at about 3:00 PM.
http://i41.tinypic.com/2cmvfc1.jpg
Melinda Duckett holding a young Trenton. (AP)

Duckett was unwilling to take a lie-detector test surrounding the incident, while Joshua Duckett, 21, Trenton's father was happy to comply and police were satisfied he had nothing to do with Trenton's absence. Early on, Joshua Duckett had been under close scrutiny because his father, James Duckett is the former Mascote, Florida police officer who is now on death row for raping, strangling, and then drowning an 11-year-old girl twenty-one years ago.

Trenton's mother, Melinda Duckett, 21, became the prime suspect in his disappearance due to her strange actions after reporting Trenton gone. For instance, Melinda began discarding Trenton's photographs, snacks, toys, and even his sonogram in the garbage just shortly after he went missing. Investigators also found freshly painted walls in some areas of the apartment and reported there were stains of unknown origin on a wall in the hall and stains that appeared to be blood on some bedding.

Only two weeks after reporting Trenton gone, Melinda Duckett was found slumped over in her granparents closet from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Her grandparents blamed the media for her death, specifically Nancy Grace, who they are suing in a wrongful death lawsuit.

Several weeks after Melinda's suicide, the Florida Department of Children and Families released several reports that indicated Melinda and Joshua had a "tumultuous relationship," often leaving Trenton in the center of their battles.

Police now believe that Melinda either hid Trenton with another person or murdered him.

Although over 2 years have passed, Trenton's father has not given up hope that he will find his son someday. On a Website set up to help find Trenton, Joshua Duckett writes:

It's been over two years
Since you've been gone
I never dreamed
It would be so long.

Not a moment passes
That you aren't on my mind
Until that moment
That you I find.

Trenton, you're loved
More than you can know
And until you return
I will never let go.

Come home soon.

Love, Daddy

I realize I will go against popular opinion, but I do not think anyone else caused this woman to kill herself. Her own guilt, and the realization that she was exposed was more than she could take. If she had been a decent human being, she would have at least left a note that told where this precious baby is. I don't think murdering mommies deserve to be handled with kid gloves. JMO

Nearly three years since he's seen his son, but Josh Duckett says he is still staying positive. Duckett says there is nothing in life that prepares a parent for the disappearance of their child, but he says helping others in the same situation has helped him and others.

Duckett and his family was the special guests at the Vigil for Hope in Leesburg Sunday night. The vigil is an event aimed at keeping missing children and adults in the public eye.

Duckett is doing his part to keep missing kids in the public eye by building a missing children's truck. He says when he first got the truck it didn't even have doors, now it's got hydraulics and will have a custom done interior, it's something he hopes will draw attention to the missing kids.

We will travel around, do truck shows and do some events about missing children. "Hopefully it will generate somebody, I mean if one kid is brought home by this truck, somebody seeing their face on the truck then my whole project has worked," says Duckett.

Duckett is hoping to get some sponsors to help pay for a vinyl exterior that will hold the pictures of missing kids. He hopes to complete the project in the coming weeks all while bringing attention to missing children including his own.

Leesburg Police have released an age progression picture of missing toddler Trenton Duckett in hopes that the new image will prompt fresh leads to find the boy.

Small towns not too proud to ask for help with high-profile crime cases

By Anthony Colarossi SENTINEL STAFF WRITER
July 21, 2009

A missing-child poster and picture of Trenton Duckett still hang on the main entrance of Leesburg police headquarters — almost three years after the 2-year-old boy disappeared and a major crime story enveloped the small town's department.

Early in the investigation, Melinda Duckett pointed to her son's father as the likely abductor. But after he performed well on a voice-stress test and showed detectives he was not being deceptive, the case entered another realm.

Quickly, investigators went from questioning a potential prime suspect to having little more to go on than a slit made in the window screen above Trenton's bed.

"That's when we all knew this was very big," said Maj. Steve Rockefeller with Leesburg police. "Within the first day, we had FBI and FDLE working with us."

Rockefeller's experiences — and those of his investigators — during the next few months offer a case study in how a relatively small police agency can manage a big-crime investigation. The progression of any large case varies, but at some point it becomes clear to local law enforcement that it will need help tracking down leads. Most agencies realize they need outside expertise.

Since the Duckett case captured national attention in early fall of 2006, at least two other missing-person cases have tapped the resources of smaller departments around Central Florida while generating significant media attention.

The case of 5-year-old Haleigh Cummings, who disappeared in February from her home in tiny Satsuma east of Gainesville, has consumed the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

And the May disappearance of Tracy Ocasio, 27, has kept Ocoee police focused on finding her.

All three cases share several elements: Each involves smaller departments with limited resources and well-publicized searches for people who remain missing.

Based simply on the amount of resources — or all "the hands in the pot" — devoted to determining what happened to Ocasio, Ocoee Detective Sgt. Mike Bryant said the case of her disappearance is probably the largest his department has handled in recent years. Orlando and Apopka police, the Orange County Sheriff's Office, FDLE and the Seminole County Sheriff's Office all have helped.

Bryant compared a major investigation of his type to building a home: You have plumbers, carpenters, electricians, roofers — all experts in individual disciplines.

"No matter how big things get, it is manageable," Bryant said. "You just have to have the right people in the right places."

Looking for Trenton
Leesburg considers itself a midsized police force. Regardless, the Duckett case is not the type any agency looks forward to, Leesburg's Rockefeller said.

This case included Melinda Duckett's suicide, national media glare from Nancy Grace's television show and, at one point, a separate investigation by the Marion County Sheriff's Office.

"Going through something like this is a learning experience I wouldn't wish on anybody," Rockefeller said.

It's also an episode that is impossible to prepare for fully. The cooperation and expertise of state and federal agencies were more valuable than any class or training his officers could take, he said.

"We had air support. We had electronics that you would not believe. It was amazing the stuff that we had at our disposal," he said.

Rockefeller's three key pieces of advice when local law enforcement must rely on outside agencies for help:

•Check the egos at the door.

•Never turn down an offer of help from an agency with expertise that can aid in the investigation.
Don't assume that when departments such as FDLE or FBI enter a case that they will take it over.

Rockefeller said he learned how to delegate assignments and manage the various resources suddenly at his disposal.

When Marion County investigators later started theorizing that Trenton might have been handed off to someone, Rockefeller said, he and his investigators had to learn not "to be closed-minded."

"The focus was always finding Trenton and bringing him home," Rockefeller said. "The worst thing is we haven't found him. That's the ultimate letdown."

Rockefeller said he thinks Trenton is dead. But he added, "If Trenton was to come home and it proved me 100 percent wrong, I would be perfectly content."

FDLE offers resources
Florida Department of Law Enforcement has had some involvement in each of the three cases. The state agency employs analysts and forensic experts it can deploy to assist local departments. FDLE supervisors also can take over an investigation that might grow beyond the capabilities of a smaller force.

"The extent of our involvement is going to vary from case to case and agency to agency," FDLE spokeswoman Kristen Perezluha said.

Generally, FDLE takes the lead in multi-jurisdictional crimes and assists with local cases, she said.

"Definitely our role is not to step on anyone's toes but to offer assistance," Perezluha said.

When help is needed, local law enforcement knows whom to contact. FDLE's seven regional offices have long-established relationships with local departments and sheriff's offices, she said.

The Duckett investigation, in fact, benefited from the FDLE's Child Abduction Response Team, which pools resources from several agencies to help with searches, Rockefeller said. CART members go door-to-door and ask specific questions, allowing investigators to cover ground that would otherwise take officers days, he said.

"Before Trenton, we were unaware of that CART availability," he said.

Another notable FDLE program is the Regional Domestic Security Task Force. Created after 9-11, it operates much like CART, pooling resources and preparing to handle a domestic-security issue.

Each of FDLE's regions includes a task-force branch.

Handling high-profile cases
University of Central Florida sociology professor Jay Corzine, who studies crime and police issues, said it's not clear whether larger departments are better suited to handle high-profile missing-person cases. Orlando police, for instance, have yet to close the case of Jennifer Kesse, who vanished from her condo near the Mall at Millenia on Jan. 24, 2006.

Larger departments, however, might be better prepared to handle those rare cases that grab national media attention and require someone trained to handle the media onslaught that accompanies, such as Trenton Duckett's disappearance.

"The larger departments all have PIOs [public-information officers], and they're set up to handle the media blitz," Corzine said.

What about the missing kids who don't end up in spotlight?

July 22, 2009

We hear about the small children who are missing; the ones like Trenton Duckett (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/topic/crime-law-justice/crimes/trenton-duckett-PECLB002294.topic), whose disappearances spawn national media coverage.

What about the thousands of other kids who are reported missing each year?

Like Ashley Marie Jacobs, who was 14 when she went missing from Ocoee (http://www.orlandosentinel.com/topic/us/florida/orange-county-%28florida%29/ocoee-PLGEO100100410130000.topic) in 2006. Or Katrice Chelsey Beckford, who was 15 years old when she was reported missing last year in Orlando.

More than 46,000 children were reported missing in Florida last year. Some are kids who ran away more than once. But many of them were returned home safely.

This is one of the reasons many media outlets don't report on runaways. The Orlando Sentinel's policy is to report about a missing person if a crime has been committed, if there is imminent risk to the person or if the missing person is particularly newsworthy.

OrlandoSentinel.com often posts missing-persons alerts released by local police.

Teenage runaways are equally and often more at risk than their younger counterparts, said Nancy McBride, National Safety Director for the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children.

Though they're too young to buy alcohol or cigarettes — and sometimes not even old enough to have a drivers license — some runaways turn to or are forced into prostitution.

"The pimps and the criminal organizations are just pouncing on these kids," said Lee Condon, a Special Agent Supervisor with the Florida Department of Law Enforcement. "It's a huge problem."

Sherry Friedlander, founder of A Child is Missing, said toddlers can wander off. Some children want to take adventures. But teenagers run away to see the world, not realizing the realities of it.

"The minute they go out on that street, they're subject to being picked up. ..," Friedlander said. "They're entered into the prostitution rings, and you never see them again."

It is a hauntingly familiar scene - the mother of a young child on television, pleading for help in finding her missing child. Suspicious fingers quickly point to the estranged husband and father of the young boy. Then a major twist in the case - something no one expected - other than possibly the police asthey began to narrow their suspicions.

A Mother's Call for Help
On August 27, 2006 two-year-old Trenton Duckett was reported missing by his 21-year-old mother, Melinda Duckett. According to Duckett, she put her son to bed and was watching movies in the other room with friends. Around 9 p.m., she went to check on her young son and found that Trenton Duckett was gone. The only clue the Florida, Leesburg's police had to go on was a cut in the window screen of the boy's room.
An Amber Alert was issued and police from six local agencies armed with bloodhounds along with local volunteers began searching for the missing boy. Roadblocks were set up and flyers with pictures of the missing boy were distributed. But as the days went on, there was little information coming in for the investigators to go on in their search.

A Troubled Marriage
Melinda and Joshua Duckett first began dating in high school and married in July 2005, a month before Trenton turned a year old. But soon the two split up and began arguing over who would keep baby Trenton.
In June 2006, Melinda filed for divorce and was later granted a temporary restraining order against Joshua after he sent a threatening email to Melinda from his MySpace account, which Joshua denies ever sending. In the email, Joshua alledgedly threatened to hunt Melinda and Trenton down and kill them.

Grandfather Duckett on Death Row
Joshua Duckett dealt with a history of family violence. His father, James Duckett, was a Macotte, Florida police officer when in 1987, he was arrested and later convicted for the rape, strangulation and drowning of an 11-year-old girl. He is currently on death row in Florida.

Reportedly, Joshua and his mother also have a past speckled with fighting. In 2005, Joshua was denied a request for a court injunction against his mother for making repeated harassing calls to his home and threatening to kidnap Trenton.

Joshua Duckett Cooperated With Police
Police questioned Joshua and were satisfied that he was was telling the truth when he told them he was in Sumter County with his mother when the report was first issued about the disappearance of his son. It has also been reported that Joshua agreed to a polygraph and the police were satisfied with the test results.
Joshua Duckett told the news media that he had not seen his son since June 2006 and made a public plea saying, "Whoever has him, please return him safe. I love him to death. He's my pride and joy, and I just want him returned safe." He also said he was doing everything he could to help police and cooperating fully with their investigation.

A Questionable Time Sequence
About a week into the investigation, police began to question the time sequence into when Trenton went missing and when he was first reported missing. Investigators reported there was a possibility that Trenton could have been missing up to two days before Melinda contacted police. Police could not find anyone who saw Trenton since he was picked up from day care on Friday, August 25, other than Melinda.
In an attempt to put together a timeline of events, investigators ask anyone who saw Trenton, his mother, Melinda Duckett, 21, or his father, Joshua Duckett, on Saturday, Aug. 26, and on Sunday, Aug. 27, to call 800-CALL-FBI.

Mark Lunsford Helps In The Search
Mark Lunsford, whose nine-year-old daughter Jessica was kidnapped from her bedroom and killed, came to the area and helped hand out flyers with Joshua Duckett. Lunsford, who is now a child advocate, hoped his presence might help increase the national media to focus on the missing child.

Disturbing Reports
On Thursday, September 7, the report came out that Melinda, unlike any other family members, had refused to take a polygraph. Although this in itself is not an admission of guilt, many have speculated as to her reasons for not wanting to be polygraphed.

Another Fatal Blow to the Investigation
On Friday, September 8, Melinda Duckett shot and killed herself while at her grandparents' home. She left no suicide note or any other clues as to what happened to her son. Her grandparents said prior to her suicide she was extremely exhausted and distraught over her son's disappearance.

Still Missing
For authorities, this is just one more major glitch to an already difficult case. Although Duckett's suicide is considered a "major development into the investigation of Trenton" as it stands - the whereabouts of the toddler is still unknown. Now with Melinda dead, investigators can only wonder what clues she took with her.

Trenton Duckett Missing Nearly 3 Years
Investigators: Boy Could Still Be Alive

POSTED: Thursday, August 20, 2009
UPDATED: 7:33 pm EDT August 20, 2009

LEESBURG, Fla. -- As the three-year anniversary of his disappearance approaches, investigators said they believe Trenton Duckett could still be alive.

VIDEO: Dad Covers Truck With Photos

Some investigators said it is possible his mother, Melinda Duckett, handed her 2-year-old son off to someone when he disappeared in August 2006.

Not all investigators think Trenton could still be alive. Many are convinced that Melinda Duckett killed her son, either accidentally or intentionally, before killing herself less than two weeks later.

The boy's father, Josh Duckett, his hopeful the case will be solved.

Leading up to the anniversary of Trenton's disappearance on Aug. 27, Josh Duckett is plastering his truck with photos of missing children, including Trenton.

"Obviously he's out there somewhere and he needs to be found," Josh Duckett said.

Investigators have warned Josh Duckett over the years that his son may be dead, but Leesburg police said some investigators still lean toward the theory that Melinda Duckett gave the toddler away.

"That's our opinion too. We feel she handed him off to someone and its just a matter of getting that little bit of information that could give us the big break in the case," an investigator said.

Law enforcement is treating the case differently than the Caylee Anthony case. Caylee was also 2 when she was reported missing last summer, but detectives were convinced she was dead long before her body was found, and as a result stopped following up on reported sightings of the girl.

In contrast, Leesburg police are still chasing down Trenton sightings, including one as recently as a few months ago.

"He was the exact same age as Trenton. They celebrated his birthday the same month as Trenton. They called him Trent, they called him Trenton," Josh Duckett said.

Police determined that sighting was not Trenton, but Josh Duckett refuses to believe his son is dead.

"We've heard it over and over again, and my thing is, show me the proof. Show me the facts," Josh Duckett said.

Police said that after three years of searching, they have no proof the boy is dead, but they also have no proof he is alive.

Josh Duckett will hold a candlelight vigil near the fountain on Main Street in downtown Leesburg at 8 p.m. on Aug. 27 to mark the day Trenton disappeared.

Harvard Expert Prepared To Testify In Lawsuit

POSTED: Thursday, December 3, 2009
UPDATED: 12:08 pm EST December 4, 2009

ORLANDO, Fla. -- A Harvard Medical School professor said he is prepared to testify that Melinda Duckett was pushed over the edge by CNN talk show host Nancy Grace, Local 6 News reported.

VIDEO: Harvard Professor To Testify (http://helpfindthemissing.org/video/21806095/index.html)

Duckett, the mother of missing toddler Trenton Duckett, committed suicide shortly after appearing on Grace's show in September 2006.

Melinda Duckett's parents are suing Grace and CNN, claiming that Grace's interview led to the suicide.

In the interview, Grace grilled Melinda Duckett with questions about her son's disappearance.

"Where were you? Why aren't you telling us where you were that day? You were the last person to be seen with him," Grace said.

Harold Bursztajn, a professor of psychiatry at Harvard, is prepared to testify that "there is a reasonable likelihood that Melinda Duckett's experience with Nancy Grace was a contributing cause of her suicide."

CNN's lawyers Grace asked the same types of questions police were asking Duckett about her missing son, Trenton.

But Bursztajn said that there is "a distinction between a police interview conducted in private and a nationally televised public interrogation."

Pointing to Grace's prior work as a prosecutor, Bursztajn said, "An interviewer skilled in interrogation can rapidly create emotional stress that can exacerbate pre-existing emotional vulnerability."

An expert hired by CNN said he has evidence that the 21-year-old was preparing to die long before the interview.

In September, Local 6 News obtained a sworn statement from Grace, who said she had "no knowledge of Melinda Duckett's frame of mind" and that Melinda Duckett "voluntarily appeared" on the show.

Grace also denied that "Melinda Duckett was subjected to mental abuse on her program."

If a settlement is not reached between CNN and Duckett's parents, the case will go to trial in about seven months.

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Talk show host Nancy Grace is firing back in a central Florida wrongful death suit by filing an emergency motion in federal court to block her deposition from being videotaped.

Grace is slated for a deposition in connection with the Melinda Duckett wrongful death case this week. Duckett's parents are suing Grace, claiming an interview with the talk show host drove their daughter to commit suicide.

"Where were you? Why aren't you telling us where you were that day? You were the last person to be seen with him," Grace asked Duckett in the 2006 interview.

On her show, Grace often uses short sound bites from jail interviews or court proceedings and then lawyers analyze each word. On Monday, however, she had a motion filed to block the same thing from happening to her.

Lawyers representing Duckett's parents are scheduled to question Grace regarding the interview she conducted with the troubled mother after she reported her son, Trenton, had disappeared; however, the Cable News Network, commonly known as CNN, said the deposition should not be videotaped, arguing in the court filing that "the risks associated with releasing deposition videotapes prior to trial are high due to the video's unique ability to be misused."

According to CNN, such videos "can be cut and spliced and used as 'sound bites' and taken wholly out of context."

Yet, on Monday night, Grace was using spliced sound bites to highlight another missing child from central Florida, Haleigh Cummings.

When Caylee Anthony disappeared, the talk show host repeatedly analyzed and commented on jail conversations as well.

"She kept telling her mother that (Caylee's) somewhere close to home," Grace said in 2008, of the Caylee Anthony case. "She said that a couple of times, and listen -- she's either clairvoyant, or she's a killer."

Still, CNN argued that releasing depositions in the Duckett lawsuit could "harass, embarrass and intimidate Ms. Grace, and corrupt the jury pool."

Grace has denied her interview with Duckett in 2006 had anything to do with her suicide, and police said they considered Duckett to be the prime suspect in Trenton's disappearance.

The Duckett family said they want the deposition to be videotaped, and attorneys for the family said they have no problem keeping the videotape confidential and not releasing it to the public.
