KSDK - Prosecutors have charged a 20-year-old man in the police chase that followed an Amber Alert.
Christopher Bryan Alexander of Dupo, Illinois, is charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child, Resisting Arrest, Assault on a Law Enforcement Officer and Tampering 1st Degree.
All of the charges so far are in Missouri, where the chase ended.
More charges are expected in Illinois, where the alleged kidnapping and chase began.
Police are thanking a motorist and the Amber Alert system for helping to save the 14-year-old girl and catch her alleged kidnapper.
It started before 3 a.m. when police were called in Columbia, Illinois. A resident told them a 14-year-old girl, the resident's daughter, had been abducted by a man armed with a knife.
Police issued an Amber Alert at 6 a.m., giving a description of the girl and the car, including a license plate.
Just before 7 a.m., a motorist called police and told them the vehicle they were looking for was right in front of them.
The motorist was on Interstate 255 southbound near mile post 27, which is just north of Horseshoe Lake Road, to the northeast of Collinsville.
Officers with Collinsville Police and Illinois State Police arrived, and tried to stop the vehicle. But the driver took off, driving into Missouri.
At that point, St. Louis police joined in, and 20 minutes after the motorist called police, the car carrying the suspect and the teen was stopped. Police stopped the car near Russell and Longfellow in St. Louis.
The suspect was taken into custody. The teen, a 14-year-old girl, was taken to a local hospital for examination.
Police did not say whether the abductor and the victim previously knew each other.
