Preparing for the O.J. Simpson circus

What could be the biggest trial the town has ever seen is set to kick off next week. If you hate crowds, avoid the Regional Justice Center. Jury selection in the O.J. Simpson robbery and kidnapping trial starts Monday.

Many say picking the right panel is the most important part of the trial. It's the part of the trial attorneys will have very little control over.

What happens outside is the crush of cameras, angling for the best shots of O.J. Simpson. But from a legal standpoint, it's what happens inside the building that matters. Starting with jury selection.

"Jury selection is not a science, it's an art," Simpson's attorney, Gabriel Grasso, said.

Grasso is one of Simpson's lawyers. He says it'll be up to both sides to keep so-called stealth jurors off the panel. People with an ax to grind or motive to serve. "Jurors who want to get on because it's high profile. They want a little piece of the action themselves. Some people may want to get on the jury to write a book after the trial," Grasso said.

The case goes back to September of last year. That's when police say Simpson and five other men burst into a room at the Palace Station and robbed two sports memorabilia dealers at gunpoint.

Hotel surveillance video captured the group as they left. Four of the men in Simpson's party are now testifying for the state. But Grasso believes their credibility will be an issue. "You have individuals who changed their testimony 180 degrees from what they originally told police to what they told the state when they made their plea agreement."

As for the intense media coverage, Grasso says he was hoping the presidential election season would mean less national interest in this case. But out of town crews are already setting up. In fact, nearly 500 press credentials have been issued.

Still, News 3 analyst John Momot believes not all coverage is bad. "Media in the courtroom is great because it keeps everyone on their toes. They have to present a fair case to the jury. And Momot says the Simpson case is hardly your typical robbery trial. Not only because of Simpson himself, but because of the evidence jurors will hear.

"There are so many nuances, Momot explains. "The taping, people wearing wires, taping the scene itself. Whoever heard of that?"

And in the end it won't be the camera angles or public opinion that counts. It's all up to 12 people.

Simpson still has one remaining co-defendant, Clarence "C.J." Stewart. Jury selection could take as long as a week. The trial itself could take five weeks.

The judge in O.J. Simpson's Las Vegas robbery-kidnap trial has rejected a bid by Simpson's lawyers to ask prospective jurors if they consider him a murderer.

Clark County District Court Judge Jackie Glass turned down the request Monday during a hearing on motions before prospective jurors were summoned for questioning.

The judge says questionnaires filled out by prospects asked whether they were familiar with Simpson's other trials, and she is not going to relitigate those cases.

That's a large block of time. I image someone less infamous the jury would be selected in one day and the trial less than a week.

Jurors filled out a 30 page questionnaire. Some jurors were already removed from service. Now with the remaining jurors; the judge is going through the entire questionnaire again to see if anyone has changed their mind on some of the issues addressed in the questionnaire.

The judge is now asking them about the OJ murder case.

So far; two jurors say they don't think they can set that aside. One is a lady who was previously trying to get out of serving; but the judge didn't buy her excuse and made her sit back down. She's trying again. LOL

Gambling was brought to the attention of the judge. Some concern was expressed that betting on the outcome of the trial might need to be part of the admonishment to the jury because outsider might contact a juror to influence a bet. One possible scenario provided was of a $100,000 bet the jury would be a hung jury and it would only take one juror to cause that to happen. The Judge said she would address the jury on this issue.

no i didn't reregister.....cos when i registered before that stupid "security code" thingy nearly threw me into a freakin FIT!!!! i had to do it like 20 times before it worked!!!!!!! i'm just gonna wait a while and see if it clears up before i reregister. cos then i won't be able to be "bambam".....cos that name's already being used!! lol--by ME!! Yes he is. This is the second time I've heard him testify
as well as the others. 'cept since that time, the others
pled guilty. Stewart has tried to get his trial severed but
no dice per the Nevada Supremes. Stewart waited too
long to request a severance.
