I'm curious, has anyone else read the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer. While they are are found in most book stores in the Young Adult section they have much like the Harry Potter books developed a cross-over appeal to adults as well.

The series, chronicles the adventures of a teenage girl and a Vampire who fall madly in love, to confuse things further their is a werewolf to serve as a rival love interest. Think Buffy the Vampire Slayer minus the martial arts and you would not be entirely wrong. It is quite frankly the most erotic thing I have ever read in my life, although there is no pre-marital sex, or drug use, smoking or drinking in the series, after reading the first three books I quite honestly thought that at age 48, I should probably be required to have a note from my mother in order to buy these books.

Has anybody else come across these books? If so what do you think?

I have not read them but one of my casual friends is addicted. She was an extra in the movie and also hosts parties and functions for other fans in the area.

Isn't the first book actually called "Twilight"? It's been on my library queue for a long time now; currently I'm #3 on the waiting list.

I would very strongly suggest reading them in order:

1) Twilight
2)New Moon
3) Eclipse
4)Breaking Dawn

If you read them out of order it would take away quite a bit of the emotional impact.

Oh my goodness! My 12 year old niece loved the first book and is asking for the others for her birthday! I was going to get them for her, but now I'm concerned. Do you think a 12 year old (soon to be 13) will get the eroticism? Or is it just an interesting story when you're that young?

Give me your insight, janicelee!

Not an easy question. I don't have children myself. Based on my nieces and nephews, of which I have eight. I think they will likely not get the eroticism. my 15 year old niece is also reading it she very definitely gets the eroticism. To be honest I'm a little bit suprised, I found it so erotic, I'm a lesbian, and even I was contemplating a cold shower after reading it.

I will say this without giving anything away, pre-marital sex is never even suggested, it just isn't an option in this relationship. I could make an argument, that this may be a healthy book for teenagers. It sends a very strong message about no matter how far out of control your hormones are control is very important.

I'm going to say, that for a normal healthy older tween, verging on teen I would say it is okay.

I LOVE that this book is rather quick reading, and glad it is so thick....it IS hard to put down.

I am completely intrigued. I want these books!!! They sound like just the kind of thing I'll like. I am making a trip to the library Tuesday night, going to see if they have them. There's a good chance they won't, you guys wouldn't believe the size of my library, it's TINY! Their true crime section is made up of about 10 books. lol Anyway, gonna check & see, maybe they'll special order them for me, they can do that at least.

Hi Claudia! The book is VERY good. Not something I would normally pick up myself. I did enjoy ONE of Ann Rice's book (forget which one though) but normally this type of book wouldn't appeal to me. It does pull you in!

Read them, I really didn't think I would like them but my closest friend was insistent that I read them so I said I'd read the first one just to get her off my back. I was about 2/3 of the way through the first one when I went back to the bookstore to buy the other three, since I knew there was no way I wasn't going to want to follow this story to it's conclusion. We are now making plans to go see the movie the first night it opens.

Good for you, Claudia! I am running up to our bookstore on my lunch hour today and getting the second one at least.

The thing I MOST liked about Twilight was the literal "love story" of it.....wow.....incredible. I know I'll sound like a dork, but the love between those two was just so timeless and deep and ....... well, I'm at a loss for words. "Soulmates" really applies. Leaves you breathless. *pant pant pant*

Janicelee, thank you SO much for mentioning these books... I absolutely LOVED the first one & I can't wait to read the others! I will be buying all four - I am sure I'll go back & read them again.

Can't wait for the movie in December - the author said when she wrote the books, she had a movie in her head. I have seen several clips from it & it looks great. I love who they picked to play Edward - I forgot his name - but he's damn sexy!

Have a funny "Twilight" story to tell all. Today I went out for lunch instead of eating at my desk. I was in a little restaurant by myself since I really needed to get away from my co-workers for awhile. A group of 5 women were sitting at the next table discussing the "Twilght" series. One of them asked a question about events in one of the books that I had never thought of and despite knowing I was being rude, I just had to lean over and say "I'm sorry I know this is rude to stick my nose in your conversation but I just have to tell you what I think..." The ladies immediately invited me to move over to their table and join the discussion, and I had a very pleasant hour discussing my new favorite series with a group of total strangers. We are going to meet again next week to continue our discussion.

Hi Claudia! Well I was waiting for your "report" on book #2!

Funny how I felt about that book.....at first I was REAL disappointed (no Edward! no Cullens!)...and add to that I did NOT like Jacob at all, or Bella's feelings toward Jacob....I am just fanatical about Edward! So, I literally put the book down about 2/3 of the way through, and didn't pick it up again until about a week and a half later, believe it or not. I HATE "spoilers" but I did look in the back of the book and saw Edward's name...so I figured there was hope. Anyway, I started reading again and just finished it yesterday. I did enjoy book #2 but not nearly as much as book #1. But at LEAST Edward came back, so the last part of the book was great. The part about the Vulterra.....or however you spell it....that was exciting, scary! I like the way there is kinda a "cliff hanger" at the end of book #2. Not giving it away to anyone here who has not read it though. I'm dying to find out if it does happen or not. I HOPE it happens. I love Edward. :67302:

I have book #3 on reserve at my county library and I'm about 27 in the queue. However I found out my CITY library has it and I reserved it there, I'm only #2 in that queue. Book #3 is not out in paperback, right? I would buy it if it were but I think it's still hardback.

I got the hardback special edition with a bunch of extras for $10, including shipping from Amazon. I paid $9 for the other 2 in paperback! Now I'm ticked I didn't get all 3 in hardback!

I actually like Jacob. I am feeling really sorry for the guy right now. I am completely torn between the two. I love Edward, but Jacob is pretty sweet himself, plus at least he's normal sometimes! Maybe I like Jacob because I love wolves so much. lol

Yes, the part in Italy was really good... that was pretty danged exciting! Of course, we knew no one was going to die, the series would be over if that happened. But it was exciting nonetheless.

Girl, I finished New Moon & am halfway through Eclipse!!! Breaking Dawn is in the mail.

I liked New Moon.... All 3 of them have sucked me in & kept me interested. It's so nice to read books like that again. I haven't had a book I really loved in a long time.

It was strange with no Edward, but I really enjoyed Bella with Jacob. I think Jacob is adorable. Honestly, if it was me, I'd have a hard time choosing between the two of them! It makes more sense to me for Bella to be with Jacob, she doesn't have to become anything different, he will age as she does, etc. However..... Jacob's love for her, to me, does not compare to the depth of Edward's. Also - Jacob didn't imprint on her, so one day he's going to imprint on someone else & she will be left like that other girl, Leah.
I guess I don't have any idea who I would rather she be with. LOL

Not a bad idea, janicelee. I am bursting wanting to discuss, but I don't want to spoil it for SS!

I just finished #3 Eclipse last night... wow. So good. I can't believe the whole story is going to be resolved in only one more book. Did you ever hear about a fifth book that she was working on, but quit because someone released part of it before she was finished? I read something somewhere on the internet. Maybe I'll go look around & see if I can find more info on it.

Not about a rumored fifth book, but I found this interesting....

By now you may have heard that Breaking Dawn, the fourth and final book in Stephenie Meyer's teenage-vampire-in-love series Twilight, sold 1.3 million copies in its first day in bookstores this weekend. But some of those copies just may be headed back: A Twilight fan who was disappointed by the twists and turns of the 764-page novel has launched a "Return Breaking Dawn" campaign on Amazon's message boards, urging fans who hated the book to return it to the store they bought it from. A Borders employee claims on her blog that she's already seen returns, and one commenter on Amazon says that the local Borders has had fifteen copies returned already.

All these posts have plenty of commenters debating the book's merits; some love it, while some feel it completely ruined the series. The L.A. Times' Denise Martin didn't like it and says that unlike J.K. Rowling in her series finale, "Meyers bunted." But based on all the totally crazy shit that happens in the book, it doesn't seem that way to us.

Thanks to the hugely entertaining live blogs of Breaking Dawn by LiveJournal blogger Cleolinda Jones — well worth a read even if you don't know the books — we now know that the following insane things occur in the final volume of the Twilight series (spoilers ahoy!):

Okay, I found it. Ends up that because of the countless emails she received, she's decided to go ahead with the fifth book, called Midnight Sun. Here's the link to her website where what happened with book #5 is discussed.

OMG!

I can't believe I just now found this thread!

I had nothing to read about a month ago and my 13 y.o. daughter gave me #1 - she told me "Mom, it's going to be as big as Harry Potter!"

I didn't believe her, but before I knew it I had read them all.

Excited for the movie - I heard it was coming out November 21st?

And will they be doing 4 movies?

Hey PK!!!

Aren't they SO good???
I hope they make 4 movies - that would be great! I have to ask you, though... did #4 leave you wanting (or expecting) more? I expected more & I am a lttle disappointed. Honestly, had she stopped #4 halfway through, I think I would have been more satisfied.

Claudia...it's your fault I found this thread...at this rate I won't be looking up from a book for the rest of this year (well Nov, the rate i'm getting through them) :groan:

I'm starting to feel a little bit like a drug dealer, I'm afraid I'm getting innocent people hooked on these books.

Don't feel bad Janicelee...Claudia is a dealer too!!! :67302:

I love it when things like that happen! :happy0158:

This is my first post in here. I finished all the books and am eagerly awaiting a new one. I had to stop reading here because you guys were way ahead of me and I didn't want to know what happened...lol. My son and I are going to see Twilight together when it comes out. Finally, he's found something he loves to read. If this has already been posted, I'm sorry for repeating it. My son has been doing alot of research on this. It seems she has another book that is going to be released that starts before Edward became immortal and continues thru to twilight. I hope she hurries up and starts where the last one left off. That would be extremly intresting. I thought I'd never find a vampire series of books to love again after Anne Rice stopped writing the chronicles. Happy reading to those who haven't finished them yet, they won't dissapoint!

Claudia, if you have a Books A Million, they aren't that expensive. You may want to keep them after you get started. They have all of them in paperback except the last one. They may have it as well, when my son went to get the last two, they only had it in hard back. I can't wait till you read them! They are wonderful!!

Is she really doing more? I thought it was over. If that's true, I am thrilled! Breaking Dawn left me wanting more, not feeling like the story had come to an end! I'd like to see a book about Jacob & Nessie (with some Bella & Edward in there too)... I think that'd be excellent.

That's what my son told me, she had almost finished it and some jerk leaked it on the internet and she wasn't going to finish it, but with it being such a success she decided to finish it and put it out. I'll ask him when he gets home from school when it's coming out. She's got another book that I think shes going to turn into a series, I think its called Host or Changeling or something. It's already in the stores, it sounds intriging. My son wants it as soon as he finishes Breaking Dawn. She's got to write more to finish out Breaking Dawn in my opinion, I was sad when I finished it, because think of the action a follow up would do! There's also a book coming out that has a guide to all the characters in the series. It's got insights and biographies of all of them and I think it has a family tree. The review on it said it has things about the characters that weren't in the series. As soon as it hits the shelves I'm gettting it.

You are Alice Cullen. Your ability to foresee danger and misfortune doesn't diminish your bubbly optimism. You are a force to be reckoned with -- anybody with enough sense knows, you never bet against Alice.

Ok, sorry it took me so long to get back, but the book with the bios of the characters is supposed to come out in December according to my son who has done extensive research on the subject matter. I'm not sure where he found it, but Bella's Lullabye is out there on the internet under Edward Cullen. It's wonderful, my son has it downloaded to our computer at home.

I just found this thread! I absolutely loved these books.
The book Stephanie Meyers was going to write was going to be called "Midnight Sun" it is basically the telling of the Twilight book but from Edward's perspective, but someone leaked the 12 chapters she wrote onto the internet and it really pissed her off so now she is saying she may not go back and finish. But it is good reading, she has it posted on her website.

I know I've been "missing" on this thread forever. Well, here's the deal. You know I just fell in love with the first book. I was enthralled. I was SO disappointed in the second book. Then I started the third and I got about a third of the way through it, or maybe a quarter of the way through it, and I just got bored. I guess I was "Twilighted out" or something. That was weeks and weeks ago. Just this week the fourth book (Breaking Dawn) came available at my library so I got it and started it the other night. So far, so good. I hope I will enjoy it as much as Twilight. I read some reviews of it on Amazon and BN and it seems like the prevailing opinion is still none of the books are as good as Twilight. Some hated Breaking Dawn but then some loved it. Anyway, it's a real FAT one so I am looking foward to reading it now during the holidays.

No, I read 2 all the way through. Remember I was posting that I didn't like it so much because Edward was out of the picture through most of the book, until the end, IIRC. I thought 3 might be okay but for some reason I just couldn't get my head into it. So I read all of 1, all of 2, part of 3. And now I'm starting 4. So basically I only skipped most of 3. Make sense? I know, I'm weird.

I had never heard about this series either and just did about a week or so ago. My daughter was reading the first one and she just gave it to me yesterday to read. I was the one who got her into HP, so I guess she's returning the favor. LOL

I was telling her about a more adult vampire kind of series that she now thinks she wants to borrow from me. It's Laurell K Hamilton's Anita Blake series

I haven't read Twilight yet, so I skipped most of this thread to avoid any spoilage.

I've been reading customer reviews on Amazon about this last book of the series and they are quite interesting. It's almost like you either love it or hate it. I love it....but NONE of the books surpassed Twilight to me, the first one. That just had me mesmerized.

I asked the grandsons why kids were walking around at the mall dressed like vampires. One of them looked at me with pity and said, "Grams...they are Goth" oops I still say they look like groups of vampires. I read somewhere that young people were actually drinking blood at vampire parties, and having vampire teeth inserted into their mouths. Now THAT is really getting into it.
