Wow I can not book a La Quinta hotel within a 100 mile radius from where I live.
I thought about going west to Laredo or to Austin or San Antonio but decided against the latter two as it is predicted to possibly impact Dallas by Sunday with flooding.
There was a possibility of La Quinta on South Padre Island, and I really wanted to go there but the wife was afraid. I did look at some pics from Dolly and the Bahia Mar, Sheraton and the Radisson all had some major damage and have not re-opened.
I did book three consecutive nights at a Howard Johnson, man I hope they have waffles. Getting a hotel that accepts pets almost limits you to La Quinta.
I was at Walmart at 5 am filling my car with gas, I filled up for ten dollars, but then my tank was almost already full.:groan:
They had already sold out of flash lights, but I already have my stuff ready as I put together a kit after Dolly. I did get tons of can goods for a few days.
I really hope it does steer north like it looks like it will but that is not good for others.

I've got a friend in Corpus that is heading to her father's in San Antonio, but I don't know if that's going to be far enough inland. I tried to get her to come here to S. AR, but like you, she has animals and that's a long trip with them.
I just hope we don't get the flooding rains with Ike like we got with Gustav...we certainly don't need any more rain since our lakes and rivers are totally flooded. Good luck to you and take care.

Since I live east of Dallas, we too are a bit afraid of the winds and rains off this storm. We have been known to be flooded in just with the normal yearly rains.
My prayers are with all the families, pets who are in the line of Ike.

Where are you guys at in Texas? Did you try New Braunfels, Seguin, Boerne, Kerrville, Blanco? Just suggestions.

Were just west of Brownsville, we will be staying put though, as long as I have to drive through floods, I would rather do that close to home. Just went to Blockbuster to pick up some Hurricane entertainment movies since we will not be out and about. I really would have liked to go to South Padre, but the wife is too scared and it is probably safest not to. Oh but my son would have had fun, this is his third hurricane and he does not turn four until next week. He had fun during Dolly, of course I took all safety precautions.
I feel pretty safe in Howard Johnson, it is cement, however some large hotels did not fare well on SPI and still have not re-opened since Dolly.

My brother and his family are evacuating from Corpus Christi in the morning. They are going all the way to El Paso and visit family, since they have to leave anyway!
I live 50 miles east of Austin. The storm looks like it may come this way as it comes inland. We have been in the middle of a terrible drought. I'm hoping we don't make the rain up all at once! I guess tornadoes are the thing that worry me the most!
I was just in La Grange today, and there are already many vehicles headed up 77.

We just heard on our local news that when it hits land it will most likely be a Cat 3 at the least as there is no land between Texas and the storm now to slow it down. Therefore, if it lands as predicted, we have been told along with tornados and flooding, we could get hit with very high winds (San Antonio).
The last hurricane I was impacted by directly, was Carla in 1961. It hit land just about where Ike is predicted and the winds and tornados hit East Texas (Tyler) with a vengence. My swing set got tangled with the antenna that was on top of our house. Texas is long overdue for really bad hurricane. Unfortunately, this just may be our year.

That is a long haul to El Paso, Texas is HUGE to drive thru, I have from North to south and east to west, it is really like a whole nother country.
I just got back in and caught up on the latest, it seems like I will get missed, which I do not mind after sitting in the middle of Dolly for 14 hours without power, she just stalled forever.

The trajectory has changed again, and it is currently moving right in her direction. It is moving farther north.

Please everyone take all precautions, and my prayers are with all of you and all of your pets. Stay safe and alert, I hope you don't get floods and tornados that do as much damage as the hurricane.

Well looks like we completely dodged the bullet, all my preparation goes to waste this time around. This one though, they did not have a good read on so I did book three days at a hotel, I am going to see if I can cancel. Better safe than sorry. Knowledge is always better, hope everyone in it's path stays safe and plays it smart.

Thanks Claycat and janicelee,
Well I did cancel for tonight and still kept them for tomorrow and Sat, I may and may not cancel those days as it is said to be wide spread, but listening to my S.A.M.E. weather radio, the only type to get BTW is with SAME technology has winds at only with gusts up to 45 knots for Friday night, that is not too bad so I will check it out in the morning and see what it looks like.
SAME stands for Special Area Message Encoding which allows you to program your radio to get alerts for the counties that are nearby that you want.
You do not want to get woken up for a Tsunami in Thailand if you live in the US.

FFB, hunker down and be careful. What area of Houston are you in?
When I left (1980), I had been living in Sugarland. But Houston and the area is flatland. I'm just thinking about all that glass in those big buildings DT Houston that will be breaking out and falling out those windows. Back in 1983 a Cat 1 went through Houston and falling glass was all over the place. It was falling from bldgs for days. But overall, Houston did well.
My ex lives in Houston and is in real bad health. His sister and I tried to talk him into letting us go get him and bring him down to Seguin a few days ago, but he is hard headed and wouldn't do it. He lives over in Deer Park and that area floods when a bird flies over. Hope he will do ok.

If you go to the Weather Channel, they are showing live pics now of areas and homes off the coast already flooded and the hurricane is still about 200 miles away. Water and debree are already coming up over the Galveston Seawall and at when the storm hits land they are anticipating winds at 115 MPH.
My prayers are with everyone in that area. :1222423:
