Search for OHS student broadens
Hungarian teen in exchange program missing since June

ONEONTA _ The FBI has become involved in the search for a Hungarian exchange student who dropped out of Oneonta High School last spring and never returned home.

Natalia Timar, 18, her passport, plane ticket back to Hungary and other belongings were found missing from her host family’s home June 2, according to Tom Overbaugh, vice chairman of the Youth Exchange Program of Rotary District 7170, which includes the Oneonta Rotary Club.

Oneonta Rotarians referred The Daily Star to Overbaugh, who is from the Trumansburg Rotary Club.

In recent days, several Hungarian media outlets have been running articles and television spots about the missing teenager. Some feature Timar’s sister and mother.

At least one of the articles suggests Timar may have been “captured by drug dealers.”

The American ambassador to Hungary saw one of the articles and notified the FBI, Overbaugh said, adding that an FBI agent called him early Tuesday morning to discuss Timar.

State police at Oneonta briefly investigated Timar’s disappearance immediately after she left the host family’s home and ruled that she had left on her own, Overbaugh said.

“The state police are positive there is no foul play involved,” Overbaugh said. “They came to the conclusion she left on her own free will. They closed the case.”

A state police investigator and trooper that were involved in the initial missing persons complaint were not available for comment at the state police barracks in Oneonta on Tuesday.

Sometime before her disappearance, the teenager, a senior at Oneonta High School, had begun hanging out with a group of friends, some of whom state police believe were involved in the narcotics trade between New York City and Oneonta, Overbaugh said. “She wasn’t keeping up her grades and her attendance at the school was poor,” Overbaugh said. Overbaugh said he met Timar while she was here. “She’s a typical teenager. A little on the quiet side,” Overbaugh said. “She seemed like a nice kid. Intelligent.”

He said she spoke English very well.

Some of Timar’s friends in the new group were students at the high school, he said.

Her Facebook.com page shows that she has 140 friends on the social networking website. Most of these friends are from the Oneonta area and many graduated in June.

But some among the group of friends Timar had begun hanging out with were not high school students, he said.

At first it was believed that Timar had gone to New York City immediately after her disappearance with someone from her group of friends, he said.

It was later learned the girl had spent time in Oneonta during the three weeks after she left her host family’s home, Overbaugh said.

But then the trail for troopers and people in Oneonta who were close to her, including the Rotarians, went cold, he said.

“They have no idea who she left with or where she was going,” Overbaugh said.

Overbaugh said Timar made at least one phone call after her disappearance to her family to let them know that she was OK.

The girl had been living with her sister in Budapest for the 10 months prior to her coming to the United States in August 2007, he said.

“This was as much of a shock to us as it was to the Hungarian Rotary people and her family,” Overbaugh said.

The host family with whom Timar was staying with at the time of her disappearance did not answer the phone on several occasions Tuesday.

Overbaugh said the family was doing everything it should have been doing and had passed all the required background checks and screenings prior to hosting her.

“There is no problem there whatsoever,” Overbaugh said.

Overbaugh said he believes Timar was also thoroughly screened by Rotarians in Hungary in order to become eligible to participate in the exchange program. “If you met her and talked to her, there would be no reason for you to suspect she would do something like this,” Overbaugh said.

Timar was warned that she was hanging out with a bad crowd, he said. “We tell the kids to be careful about what friends they make,” Overbaugh said.

Overbaugh said Timar’s status in the United States may now be illegal. “She came here on a student visa. Her student visa has been terminated because she voluntarily left the program,” Overbaugh said.

PI fears trouble for missing student
By Jake Palmateer

ONEONTA _ A private investigator hired by the family of a Hungarian exchange student who dropped out of Oneonta High School in June said the 19-year-old may have been forced into prostitution.

Augustine Papay Jr., a retired New York City homicide detective, was in Oneonta late last week as part of his investigation into the disappearance of Natalia Timar.

"I am aware that she got involved in a bad crowd and may have befriended some criminal elements because she was naive and a trusting-type person," Papay said in a news release to The Daily Star.

"However, I have reason to believe that Ms. Natalia Timar may be an endangered missing person."

Timar, her passport, plane ticket back to Hungary and other belongings were found missing from her host family's home in Oneonta on June 2, according to Tom Overbaugh, vice chairman of the Youth Exchange Program of Rotary District 7170, which includes the Oneonta Rotary Club.

State police launched an investigation but later concluded there was no foul play involved, Overbaugh previously said.

But in Papay's release, the investigator said that although it was initially believed Timar's disappearance was voluntary, there is circumstantial evidence to suggest that she may be held against her will and was forced into prostitution in New York City by people involved in the sex trade.

"She was an ideal poster child for them and I believe that her movements and communications are now being restricted and she is being held against her will," Papay said.

Papay said he shared this evidence with the state police and FBI, but he did not disclose it to The Daily Star.

Timar's family has offered a $1,000 reward for information that leads to her whereabouts, he said.

"Natalia has not contacted her parents in the past three months and the family is devastated ever since they lost contact with her," Papay said. "Her mother is suffering from lung cancer and she hopes that someone will come forward with new information regarding the whereabouts of her youngest daughter."

Timar's birthday was Saturday, according to missing person posters posted around Oneonta last week.

Papay said he can be contacted at (866) 533-5099 or through e-mail at guspapay@gmail.com. All information submitted will be handled as confidential, he said.

With that AIP disorder, I hope she is not wandering around somewhere and being taken advantage of! I hope they have checked all hospitals. Praying for a safe return!
