Details of Disappearance
Sharon Baldeagle ran away from her hometown of Eagle Butte, South Dakota on September 18, 1984, along with an older female friend. According to her companion, they were hitchhiking together in Casper, Wyoming when they were picked up by Royal Russel Long. Long took the two girls to his home in Evansville, Wyoming, fed them, then offered them $100 for sexual services. When the girls refused, he tied them up, beat Sharon Baldeagle and raped her friend. The older girl escaped and went for help, but by the time police arrived at the residents Long and Baldeagle were gone. Royal Russel Long was apprehended in 1985 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Sharon Baldeagle was not with him and he said he didn not know her whereabouts. He said he drove her to Cheyenne, Wyoming and put her on a bus or truck bound for Dallas, Texas and this was the last time he ever saw her. Prosecutors considered charging Long with Baldeagle's murder, but they decided against it, and Baldeagle's father stated he believed his daughter was alive. Long pleaded guilty to two counts of kidnapping for the purpose of committing indecent liberties with a minor and was sentenced to two life terms in prison. (more at above link)

Sharon Baldeagle has never been found. Foul play is suspected in her case.

I'm sorry they didn't charge him with murder, but at least he's off the streets and can't hurt any more little girls.

So it seems they only have his word that he put her on a bus, but since she ran away originally and her father believes she's alive so is that enough reason to not charge him.

I think that they didn't have enough evidence to charge him with the murder and since they only had the lady that she ran away with...her word against what he said that they didn't do the charges. He did get 2 life sentences for the kidnapping so maybe it was partly they didn't want to put the family through that and also leave the door open in case they later can get evidence against him since he won't be going anywhere. Thats just my guess I searched and could find very little on the case at all.

At least this predator is locked up behind bars forever! Cute little girl. Most likely, she met with foul play. Sad.
I didn't have any luck either trying to locate more information on this case.
