he was almost 8. he's been sick with liver disease for a couple years now, but within the last week really started going downhill. i was hoping to at least get thru today, but it wasn't to be.

Oh, I'm so sorry to hear it. It never gets any easier to lose one of our furbabies, does it. Big hug to you and loving last pet to Thor. (I had a Thor when I was in high school/college. He was a wonderful German Sheppard.)

thanks so much for the kind thoughts everyone. my vet & his boyfriend were on call all day so we invited them to dinner, seeing as how they wouldn't have time to make anything. my vet was telling me about a woman who has a male saint who has developed glaucoma & she doesn't want to mess with his meds & she is considering euthanizing him. he is only 2! he's gonna talk to her tomorrow & try to get her to sign him over. he wants me to take him if he can get him. it's been a very strange day.

Mary,
An Offering of Sympathy for the passing-on of your beloved Thor on Christmas day.:1222423: May you find some comfort in the thoughts of those who understand and care. You describe what seems to me a rather surreal day.
Perhaps your Thor, in his shedding of the physical, opened a window for you to share your love for him with another of his own kind. Prayers that your vet is armed with the power of persuasion, that a wrong is righted, and a special life is saved and placed in your loving arms.
So very sorry for your loss, maryhaze! :1222423:

I just saw this thread and am so sorry about Thor. My heart aches for you.
I had to go to my favorite aunt, one of a kind, best friend's funeral on 12/26, and I was thinking, "This is the saddest time of my life". But then I started thinking about my dogs, Caesar and Kodiak, who are waiting for me at the rainbow bridge, and got even sadder. I can't comfort you, mary, because I don't think there is comfort that can come from another person, really, but I can say that I understand your sorrow.

Mary,
Was glad to see the update on the Saint in peril. Certainly hope she will relinquish. Given her conversation with your vet, she isn't "in love" with her dog. IMHO, if we aren't "in love" with them, they suffer.:1187603408.CR.Mothe
I hope you don't mind if I ask a question re the Saints. Isn't 8 yrs considered a long (normal) life span for the giant breeds? Back in the late 80's (88-89), I had in my care a Saint/Dane. Sam looked like a Dane and the sweetest man in town. A gentleman. He started having nosebleeds and it was a couple of months before he was diagnosed with a cancer of the nasal cavities. I was undone. He was diagnosed at Texas A&M. I was told that nothing could be done; that he had a type of cancer rare in dogs and more commonly seen in pigs. It was then that my vet told me that a 7 yr old Giant was considered long-lived. Maybe he was just trying to console me. Sam was not quite 7 1/2 when he was diagnosed. Of course that was 2 decades ago and I hope the life expectancy of those wonderful breeds has increased. But, I was thinking that Thor probably lived a full and long life for those of his kind.:1222423:

you are right, any of the "giant breeds are considered old by 8. it's just never enough time with them.

I've already posted my condolences, Mary, but I just wanted to let you know how deeply we all care. There are no words that will help ease the pain we feel when we lose a piece of our heart.
It's been over a year since I lost my horse, my beautiful Wind, and not a day passes that I don't ache for her.
Time doesn't ease the pain, I don't think, it just makes it more bearable.
Again, for Thor. :1222423: Run free, sweet boy.

Hi Mary,:1222423:
I continue to think of you & hope that you are ok. I know that 8 yrs isn't enough time. There's never enough time. Don't think that the pain or sadness ever goes away. I guess that's the price we pay for the privilege of having these wonderful beings in our lives. Even tho I sometimes think that I can't live through it again, the privilege is worth the price. I was attracted to this forum because I found those who understand the depth of feeling one can have for the animals in their lives.
