View Full Version : Elijah Archuletta - An arrest was made late Friday night in a six-year-old case
Man accused of killing a baby is arrested

An arrest was made late Friday night in a six-year-old case that resulted in the death of a baby.
The family of that baby is still in shock after the unexpected arrest. It was considered a cold case but now six years later the suspect is finally behind bars.
Jesus Manuel Moran was arrested, Friday, accused of killing a seven-month-old baby in a drunk driving crash that happened in November 2002 on Ajo Way near Camino Verde.
Police say Elijah Archuletta was strapped in his car seat and ejected from the family minivan then crushed in the crash.
Police have been searching for Moran for the past six years. They say that tips into 88-crime helped lead to Friday's arrest.
Investigators say they spotted him in Sahuarita, in the front yard of a home where they say his wife and other family members still live. At first he denied who he was, then later admitted to it.
Neighbors like Bill Medearis saw all the action.
"I saw the flashing lights. I heard someone pound on the door," Medearis said.
After hearing about who they arrested, Medearis says he's glad he's locked up.
"Yeah, they should catch him. He's liable to do it again, not for revenge but just get him off the road," Medearis said.
Off the road and off the minds of Elijah's family who has been driving in from New Mexico at least once a year to the spot where he died.
His mother Marilyn said, "I just thank God because we've been praying and waiting for this day for the past six years and it just seems like a total miracle, an answer to prayer."
Investigators say they knew who they were looking for this whole time because Moran was taken to the hospital after the accident.
Shortly after treatment, he got up, walked out and vanished. Six years later he is behind bars.

5 year battle for justice in death of 7 month old baby
Posted: Feb 12, 2008 05:59 PM
News 4 needs your help with a series of child murders that haven't seen justice... Like the drunk driving death of 7 month old Elijah Archuleta.
One second, this attention-getting, giggling baby boy was smiling and saying "mama" for the first time.
The next second, he was crushed under his family's minivan.
November 23, 2002, Elijah Archuleta was the only member of his family that did not survive the crash. Five years later, all his family can do is visit the spot where he died. Everything has changed.
"When I would go home after work," his father Anthony tells us, "Elijah would be in his walker and be happy. And after that, I'd go home, and there was just silence."
"I try not to fester in anger," says Elijah's mother, Marilyn, "but i'm angry and concerned. I'm concerned about the safety of other people that are driving down the road, wondering if he might hit someone else."
'He' has a name and a face, although, police say, right after the crash this man lied about his identity.
Legally drunk, with an injured leg, investigators say Jesus Manuel Moran, also known as Guadalupe Bustamante, got up and walked out of a local hospital. He just limped away from justice.
"The little baby was in his car seat," explains PCSO Dep. Dawn Hanke. "He was thrown through a window of the vehicle and lodged under a wheel of the vehicle... And that's how his parents had to watch him die."
"I would hope," says Department of Public Safety Officer Quentin Mehr, "that those who have information about this man and his whereabouts would have the honesty and integrity to come forward and talk, so he can be found."
Jesus Manuel Moran may be slipping back and forth between Mexico and Arizona. And, again, he may be using a fake name. Elijah's parents say Moran has ties to Tucson, Agua Prieta, Sahuarita and Marana.
"It's wrong that any person should have a child murdered and the man responsible get away with it," says Anthony. "What makes it harder for us is that he has family members here in Tucson who know who he is and where he is and they won't say a word."
DPS will tell you, the stretch of Ajo Highway near Camino Verde where Elijah was killed is dangerous, but that night, investigators say, it was drinking and driving that sent a baby to his grave.
If he were alive today, Elijah would be almost 6 years old... And he'd be saying much more than "mama."
You can call 88-CRIME right now and tell investigators how to close this case.
There's a $7,000 reward for the arrest and conviction of Jesus Manuel Moran.

Adorable baby boy! I cannot imagine the grief his parents have experienced over the last 6 years. So glad the man who caused his death is now behind bars.
