Thanks SG, I'm watching Fox News now. How horrible! She's only been back there less than two months. Shot in the neck is what is being reported.

Today show reports her killed.
CNN homepage shows she was killed, the story following the link says she's in critical condition. :0009:
I expect everyone's scrambling for confirmation of her condition right now.
Mushareff - it will be interesting to watch him as he gives a statement about this tragedy.
ETA OK CNN now saying she has been killed as well. OMG

So shocking that Benazir Bhutto was assasinated.
(By the way, I have asked the moderators to delete the other thread I started about this topic.)

Fox is reporting that she was shot 5 times; once in the chest and once in the neck. Not sure where the other shots hit.

How coincidental that Bhutto's popularity was rising steadily, Mushareff's was declining, an election is to be held on Jan 8 and Bhutto just happens to be assassinated 10 days before the election.

I had a feeling this would happen sooner or later. Several attempts had been made prior to this. Pakistan is a powder keg and I'm afraid this event may have just lit the fuse.

Can you imagine what she could have accomplished had she not been killed and did win the election?

Absolutely. This assassination has the mark of Mushareff all over it IMO.

Just so sad. I really hoped she could bring changes for so many in her country. The hatred and killing just seems to never end. She knew she was marked from the minute she stepped back into that country. Her bravery is just amazing.

ITA she was a marked woman the minute she returned from her self-imposed exile. Mushareff fixed it so she would be immune from the (trumped up) corruption charges against her when she first fled Pakistan in order that she could return and lead her party.
Then she's assassinated? How convenient - 10 days before the election.
Mushareff has a lot of explaining to do.

Out there on the 'Net people are already discussing how corrupt and terrible she was. Hmmmpf, that didn't take long. I realize that not speaking ill of the dead is old-fashioned but you'd think people could be respectful for a couple of hours.

The woman survived nine previous attempts on her life. This one, just before the election proves she was probably going to win.

I'm not much into political discussion, but I greatly admired Benazir mainly for her courage to be a woman accomplishing something in the Islamic world where women are to remain hidden. It's so sad that we'll never know if she would've won the election. :1222423:

Thanks so much, Harlett :) it was a very interesting video. I hadn't really thought about the repercussions of her assassination here but I'm hoping it doesn't lead to another war situation. :(

Now that I've gotten back to the States, it's really hitting me that she's gone. For all of her questionable moments, she was fearless and strong. I truly admired her when she came to power the first time, when I was just a teenager. And personable! A friend of mine met her through a classmate from Harvard, and within a few minutes Benazir asked her to call her "Pinkie", all her friends did. She was a giant, and now there's a big hole left. Can the bad guys, whoever they are, kill everyone who opposes them? Somedays it feels like it:1222423:
