I have uploaded a bunch of avatars for posters to use, if one is wanted. You also have the option to add a custom one of your own.
To add an avatar go to your UserCp, look down the left column and click edit avatar.
To use a custom avatar if you have it stored in photobucket or some other storage place like that, put in the url to the photo. If you use a custom avatar, Please do not use one that would be offensive to other posters.
To load one that is stored on your computer click on browse and go to the file where you have them stored.
If anyone needs any help let us know.
I will be adding more avatars to choose from.

Is it OK if we occasionally change our Avatars? You know, different mood, different season or something. Getting to have an Avatar is sorta new privilege.

What size did you say they had to be? I know I read that somewhere, but can't find it now. Most I've found are 100 X 100; will that work?
TIA
I found it!
Note: The maximum size of your custom image is 150 by 150 pixels or 68.4 KB
(whichever is smaller).

Hello, checking in to check my avatar:howdy:
150x150 is the max size...
Does the board software automatically resize them or do we need to do that before we post the link?

It should resize them, I know it does when I upload an av.. If it doesn't let me know and I will check the settings.

and here I have been doing my own to fit...trying trying...:thud2:
There are some avatar websites too.
Avatarity
Avatarist
They will resize them for you, but I found that motion ones, don't
download well.
Also consider movement/flashing. This is not a health board, so it is not as extreme a
situation as I find elsewhere. But there are people with seizure disorders
who cannot view moving icons. If you have friends coming here eventually who have this health problem, you may warn them that moving images are here,
before they log in. Most of the health boards I read and post at do not allow
movement in the avatars for this reason.
But that may not turn out to be an issue here. I personally like the larger avatars, and the fun icons. (But then I am graphically prone to like images over words.) I think the avatars here add tremendously to the posters' personalities!

There is a very nice site that has umpty ump smileys/graphics like this one:
http://bestsmileys.com/christmas1/10.gif
main page:
http://bestsmileys.com/
They allow free linking (which is rare).
I've used them for a year now at other boards.

They are fine as long as they are not too big and everyone doesn't go overboard using them...
I have already seen a few fill up a whole page with them and that's not what it was intended for.. it was mainly so pictures of Missing could be posted in the forums.

What size does an AV have to be to retain animation?
Pauli
12-10-2007, 09:02 PM
150x150 or less... if you upload from your browser and it has to resize you may lose the animation, so it's best to make sure it's already that size or less. If not I would resize before trying to load animated ones.

Oh I can totally relate.. I was walking my friends lab the other week and I couldn't believe how strong he was. She said they are 'working dogs', therefore they have much strength. I was being pulled like a rag doll. LOL I have a 17 lb dog myself, so it was a bit different than walking her.

I keep having difficulty!!
I have this first avatar which I resized down to avatar size through photobucket. Then many attempts to upload kept giving me error msg--- invalid URL, file invalid
But then suddenly--- pow! I had this avatar. And I was/am happy.
BUT I would like to switch.
So I resized another photo at photobucket and again am having the same trouble trying to upload it here.
I tried uploading the original image with the hope that the site would resize it. Got a TOO BIG message.
So I went back to photobucket site to try a different URL. They offer a number.
I am so frustrated!! Please help!

I seem to have stumbled onto the solution which I will post here for others.
I went back to photobucket and tried copying another URL, this one entitled DIRECT LINK. That worked!!

There is a box under your profile in your usercp and it says 'Image Options"
You will see a button that says 'change avatar' and one that says 'change profile picture'
Just remember when you change one to hit the save button at the bottom.

click on Usercp and when it opens up in the left column, click on edit avatar. You will see some avatars show up.. there is a drop-down box with catagories in it... Ladies, misc.. etc.. and there is one with a few that I designed.. just pick what ever one you find you like and hit save.

Thank you, Ross. If Harlett's suggestion didn't pan out, I was going right to your door step.
Do you know of an MIA? I come from that era, and all my friends were eventually identified. My family and friends take in all 5 branches of the service. I salute all who gave it up for the rest of us.

My husband was 10 yrs Air Force and served at the tail end of the Viet Nam era....I remember the time period well. Although I was more of a hippie-type (before nursing school), I NEVER engaged in protesting against our soldiers and I supported our country so that our enemy did not think we were all "Jane Fonda" types.
....I am now showing my very first Avatar, and may change it periodically....This Internet is a very cool place, eh? Who would have thought such a thing would ever exist, back in 1965. lol
