TOWN OF ASHFORD — Foul play may be involved in the death of a woman whose body was found in an isolated area of southeastern Fond du Lac County, says Fond du Lac County Sheriff Mick Fink.

"It's a real whodunit," Fink said Sunday. "We're definitely looking at a suspicious death, if not a homicide."

Two hunters driving deer for a third hunter found the body at 9:17 a.m. partially submerged in a frozen creek in a wooded area behind W4617 Skyline Drive in the town of Ashford, said Chief Deputy Mark Strand. The area is southwest of Campbellsport.

The body is frozen in the foot-deep creek, but appears to be a woman due to the clothing, Fink said.

"Anything is possible as we get into this, but we're pretty sure it's a woman," he said.

The death appears "relatively recent" and no women have been reported missing in Fond du Lac County that fit the timeframe, Strand said.

A cause of death was not apparent, Strand said. The Fond du Lac County Medical Examiner processed the body for evidence and an autopsy was expected Sunday or today, he said.

Strand would not reveal the name of the landowner, but said his department will be contacting a Milwaukee man who recently purchased the land. He said there are vacant buildings in the area, and it appears there would be no reason for someone to frequent the area.

"This could be a lengthy investigation," Fink said Sunday afternoon. "We're working a little against the weather, it's expected to snow later today."

Authorities could say little about the victim Sunday.

"It's going to be a lot of follow-up, a lot of leads that will have to be figured out and a lot more departments and agencies involved to determine if they have anybody missing," Strand said.

He said the entire detective bureau was at the scene Sunday to help with the investigation.

A description of the clothing may help. Maybe she could be someone from IL although could be from anywhere.

Sheriff: Body found was partially decomposed

ASHFORD, Wis. - The Fond du Lac County sheriff says a body found by some deer hunters in a creek was partially decomposed and dental records will be used to try to identify it.

Sheriff Mick Fink said Monday that investigators believe the body belongs to a female at least 15 years old. He says how she died is unknown.

Fink says because the body was only partially decomposed, it's likely the victim has been dead a matter of months, not years.

The sheriff says no missing women are currently being reported in Fond du Lac County or any surrounding counties that would match the remains found Sunday morning.

The body was found about 17 miles south of Fond du Lac.

FOND DU LAC COUNTY - New information now about a body found in Fond Du Lac County. Police say it was a young woman and the body had been there for awhile. A group of hunters came across the body in a shallow stream on an abandoned farm, and new evidence has investigators thinking someone murdered the woman and dumped the body, thinking no one would ever find it. Click here to see video from the scene. Investigators are now calling the case a Jane Doe homicide, but they still don't know who the victim is. "This is somebody's sister, this is somebody's daughter, somebody's mother, who knows? It's a human dealing we're dealing with,” Fond du Lac County Sheriff Mick Fink said. Click here to see and interview with Fond Du Lac County Sheriff Mick Fink. The victim is an adult woman, most likely Caucasian. It's not clear how long the body has been in this wooded area far from any homes. "The body's in an area that could certainly be referred to in the old detective lingo as a ‘dump site,’” Sheriff Fink said. The owner of the land didn't want to comment, but the sheriff says he is not considered a suspect. Residents aren't surprised someone picked this area to dump the body. "It might have seemed a good place as it has at other times. You hide a body in the woods, you cover it up with branches,” Lomira resident Bill Melandes said. The investigation is proving tough. There haven't been any reports of missing people matching the woman's description. As forensics experts try to identify the woman, the investigation is growing. Detectives are even talking to police departments in other states, in the hopes that someone out there knows who this woman is.

Homicide investigation proceeding slowly

Details on what investigators are calling a “Jane Doe” homicide were sparse a day after three deer hunters found a woman’s body in southeastern Fond du Lac County.

The hunters, Joshua Dillman of Milwaukee and Joseph Majerus and Tony Schraufnagel of Lomira, found the body at 9:17 a.m. Sunday partially submerged in a frozen creek in a wooded area behind W4617 Skyline Drive in the town of Ashford.

The Reporter was unable Monday to reach the men who found the body.

Sheriff Mick Fink said detectives talked to landowner Joseph Bonlender of Campbellsport Sunday. Bonlender confirmed he built a pole shed to store vehicles on the property shortly after his recent purchase of the land. The body was not visible from a trail that led to the pole shed, Fink said. He said Bonlender is not a suspect in the woman’s death.

Bonlender declined to discuss the investigation when contacted by The Reporter.

The cause of death remains under investigation.

Fink did not rule out suicide, but said murder seems more likely.

“There are several indicators for (a homicide),” Fink said. “The body is in a rural area. The body is in an area (that) certainly could be referred to in the old detective lingo as a ‘dump site.’ There’s not a residence that was nearby, and (the body was found) in a wooded area.”

Responding officers searched the area and took photographs at the crime scene. Fond du Lac County Medical Examiner Douglas Kelley removed the body shortly after 3:30 p.m. Sunday.

Fink said Kelley is working with a forensic odontologist who will check the teeth against dental records and a forensic anthropologist who will handle skeletal work.

The Sheriff’s Department is hoping to have the body examined this week. No timeline was given for results.

Fink said the victim is most likely a white woman and stressed that families missing a child should not be concerned. :groan:

Although no women have been reported missing recently in Fond du Lac or surrounding counties, Fink said he is hopeful results from the Medical Examiner’s Office will send up red flags in National Crime Investigation Center records.

“I’m really hoping that someone will tell us we have a missing person that’s within however many miles from here that will start to make some sense out of what, right now, seems to not be making any sense at all,” Fink said.

Currently, the Sheriff’s Department is waiting for results from the Medical Examiner’s Office and handling inquiries from other agencies. Fink said four or five agencies called before Monday’s 11:30 a.m. press conference with one call from a detective in Minneapolis.
“Hopefully, with the modern technology that’s out there and some good old-fashioned detective work, we can bring this thing to some kind of successful resolution,” Fink said.

Anyone with information on the death of a woman found Sunday in rural Fond du Lac County can call the Sheriff’s Office Tip Line at (920) 906-4777.

Fond du Lac County Body Still a Jane Doe

Updated: Dec 3, 2008 07:41 PM EST

As the identification of a body found in Brown County gives new momentum to a murder investigation there, authorities in Fond du Lac County still don't know the identity of a body hunters discovered there nearly two weeks ago.

All the sheriff's department will tell us right now is that the body found in the southern part of the county is a teen-aged or young adult white woman.

At this point Fond du Lac County detectives still don't know who was "dumped" -- their word -- in the woods. In fact, much of the mystery is being unraveled by scientists, trying to determine age, height, cause of death, and even how long the body was there.

The discovery continues to generate a lot of calls. At least 18 investigative agencies have contacted them, including a phone call from Illinois State Police looking for Stacy Peterson.
The 23-year-old disappeared last year. Her husband, former police sergeant Drew Peterson, is a suspect in the case, which police have labeled a "potential homicide."

"They had exchanged some information about what we had compared to what they had," Fond du Lac County Sheriff Mick Fink said.

But Sheriff Fink doesn't feel the body found in their county is Stacy Peterson.

"At this point there's also a possibility -- but the probability isn't good at this point," he said. "We'll know more as we go through the stages of this investigation."

It is an investigation they expect will take a while.

"We'll resort to whatever we need to do to try to identify this girl," Fink said.

Sheriff: Wis. remains unlikely missing Ill. woman
By ROBERT IMRIE | Associated Press Writer
3:29 PM CST, December 4, 2008
WAUSAU, Wis. - Deer hunters find skeletal remains buried in two remote places nearly 100 miles apart in eastern Wisconsin. Brown County investigators identify theirs quickly. Fond du Lac County officials aren't so lucky.

After nearly two weeks and inquiries from 18 law enforcement agencies, Fond du Lac County Sheriff Mick Fink said Thursday he has no leads into the young woman's identity.

"Somebody saying, 'Hey my kid is missing or my wife is missing and I think John Doe murdered her,' none of that," Fink said. "It doesn't appear to be a high profile local missing person or even statewide in Wisconsin. At this point, we don't see that."

That rules out Laurie Depies, who was 20 when she disappeared Aug. 19, 1992, from a parking lot at a town of Menasha apartment complex where her boyfriend lived. And University of Wisconsin-Green Bay student Amber Wilde, 19, who was 4 1/2 months pregnant when she vanished Sept. 23, 1998, in Green Bay.

Fink said he also doesn't think the body belongs to Stacy Peterson, the young suburban Chicago police officer's wife whose disappearance has drawn national attention.

For now, Fink calls the partially decomposed body found Nov. 23 in a creek 17 miles south of Fond du Lac "Jane Doe." He believes she's a homicide victim who's been dead months, not years.

"I am hoping the forensic people can come back with something," he said.

The Wisconsin Clearinghouse for Missing & Exploited Children & Adults listed 32 adults and 10 children as missing Thursday in Wisconsin, the longest being a Mauston woman who disappeared in 1949. Thirty have been missing since 2000.

Excluding Fond du Lac County's Jane Doe, seven other bodies found in the state since 1977 remain unidentified, the Clearinghouse said.

Fink said his detectives have identified 24 girls described as missing and exploited children in Wisconsin, Minnesota and Michigan who "kind of fit our description" and are sorting through those.

On Wednesday, remains found by hunters Nov. 26 in a shallow grave in rural Brown County were identified as Areerat Chuprevich, a 32-year-old Allouez woman missing since April 2003. Investigators said she died of a gunshot wound to the head.

A suspect in the killing, Chuprevich's 41-year-old stepson-in-law, hung himself in prison in 2006, investigators said.

Fink said Brown County had a big advantage -- they had a person missing under suspicious circumstances and dental records to compare to the remains.

In Fink's case, all investigators know is: the remains are those of a physically mature, Caucasian woman, maybe as young as 14 or as old as 40. The cause of death is unknown, but investigators found no evidence of suicide, and there's no explanation for why she was found in an isolated, rural area.

Investigators sent insects located near the body to an expert at Purdue University who "hopefully can give us some rough time frame of how long the body has been there," Fink said.

Other forensic specialists are working to get a good sample of DNA from either her teeth or bones, the sheriff said.

Police inquiries about the remains have come from Illinois, Minnesota and Wisconsin, Fink said.

Illinois investigators asked whether the remains could be Peterson, the 23-year-old Bolingbrook, Ill., woman who vanished Oct. 28, 2007, Fink said.

"It is very slim, probably outside the realm of possibility, that this is Stacy Peterson," he said. "Based on their known facts and what we know."

Peterson's husband, 54-year-old Drew Peterson, a former Bolingbrook police sergeant, is a suspect in her disappearance. He has not been charged and has repeatedly said he thinks his wife ran off with another man and is alive.

Sgt. Tom Burek, a spokesman for the Illinois State Police, which is leading the Peterson investigation, said he was unaware of any inquiries made in Wisconsin. "I don't get briefed every time something is discovered," he said.

Fink said the discovery of Jane Doe's remains prompted a call from some worried parents from Hartford who hadn't heard from their daughter in a while. The lead was promising, given Hartford wasn't that far from the discovery site.

"But we found her alive and well," the sheriff said.

The Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department is looking for information to help solve a "Jane Doe" homicide case.

Sheriff Mick Fink said a press conference will likely be held before Christmas to help identify the woman's body found the morning of Nov. 23 in a wooded area behind W4617 Skyline Drive in the town of Ashford.

"We were able to replicate all of the clothing that she was wearing," Fink said. "We bought it directly in the same size, the same (brand)."

The Sheriff's Department detective bureau has received statistics from forensic anthropologist Leslie E. Eisenberg, and that information has been entered into the National Crime Investigation Center database.

Fink said forensic odontologist Don Simley did complete a dental workup of the woman. Fond du Lac County Medical Examiner Douglas Kelley will forward to Simley any possible matches from agencies with missing women.

Fink said he did not want to discredit the DNA work being done, but if the woman was not entered as a missing person, there would be no chance for a match.

"We really have that long and hard task of identifying her, but we can't put aside that she is a human being," Fink said. "We are trying as delicately as we can to get (information) out to the press, make sure the press understands that we need them to help identify her.

With the cause of death still undetermined and detectives thinking the woman may not be from the area, Fink said he is hoping someone in the United States can help.

"We need the national press to solve this case," Fink said.

Investigators Have More Clues to Jane Doe's Identity

Dec 16, 2008 07:02 PM EST
By Natalie Arnold

It's been nearly a month since hunters found a woman's body in a wooded area in the southern part of Fond du Lac County.

With no hot leads, authorities are more certain now that she is not from Wisconsin.

"We are fairly certain that our victim isn't a local, high-profile missing and endangered person," Sheriff Mick Fink said.

Fond du Lac County investigators hope a national missing persons database will be a key to solving their case.

Right now scientists are examining the young woman's body, trying to determine everything from her height and weight to what caused her death.

It's information investigators plan to share with agencies all over the country, along with other clues, such as what she was wearing at the time she was found.

While they certainly know what they found in the woods, a month later Fond du Lac County investigators still don't know who, why, or how.

Which means they must wait for the scientists to complete their work.

But while investigators are taking a close look at the body, they are also examining the clothes found on the body. Those, too, could provide clues as to who this woman was.

One would be the victim's socio-economic status. Clothes can also indicate their manufacturer.

Investigators say in this case they did, leading them generally to the stores that sold the clothes.

"Certain clothing manufacturers sell to Wal-Mart, KMart, Shopko, Penney's, Sears. You're able to narrow it down like that to where they went to, but there's how many of those stores out and about?" Sheriff Fink said.

Investigators say it is a long but very important process.

"I want to put a name to her, I want her remains to go back to her loved ones, and I would like to, if in fact this is a crime, bring that person to justice that did it," the sheriff said.

Why not put photos of the clothes out there along with sizes?

News conference to give details on woman's body

December 21, 2008 1:35 PM ET

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) - A news conference is scheduled for Monday to provide the public with more details about the human remains of a woman found by hunters last month in the town of Ashford.

Fond du Lac County Sheriff Mick Fink says the hope is that releasing more details about the "Jane Doe" death investigation will increase the likelihood of someone coming forward to identify her.

Officials think the death is a homicide, but little other information is known. Also, authorities haven't ruled out suicide.

Three hunters found the body in a wooded area on Nov. 23. The body was partially submerged in a frozen creek.

Dental records and a more detailed description of the woman's clothing are expected to be released during the news conference.

Information about the body provided by a forensic anthropologist has already been entered into the National Crime Investigation Center database.

Sheriff: No Leads On ID Of Body Found In Town of Ashford, WI
;Body Found On Nov. 23

UPDATED: 12:59 pm CST December 22, 2008

FOND DU LAC, Wis. -- Fond du Lac County Sheriff Mick Fink said the partially decomposed remains found a month ago by hunters are those of a female who was 15 to 21 years old.
Fink said on Monday that investigators believe she died in late summer or early fall but her identity remains a mystery. The remains were found last month in the Town of Ashford.

Hunters found the remains Nov. 23 in a creek 17 miles south of Fond du Lac. Investigators said that they believe she was killed, but Fink said her cause of death is undetermined.

Fink said experts determined the victim was white but possibly has Hispanic ancestry.

Fink said that the victim was wearing a Zoey Beth brand black top and size three Angels brand jeans, and was probably knock-kneed and pigeontoed.
He said the victim weighed 110 to 135 pounds and had long, light brown hair.
Fink said the hope is that releasing more details about the "Jane Doe" death investigation will increase the likelihood of someone coming forward to identify her.

Information about the body provided by a forensic anthropologist has already been entered into the National Crime Investigation Center database.

She was a white 15- to 21-year-old donning jeans and a pink and black top before her body was found Nov. 23 in the town of Ashford.

Thirty days after the “Jane Doe” homicide investigation began, Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department investigators met with the press, hoping that images of a mannequin dressed in the same clothes found at the scene will spark leads.

Sheriff Mick Fink said Hispanic ancestry cannot be ruled out for woman found in a wooded area behind W4617 Skyline Drive.

The woman is 5 foot, 1 inch tall, give or take three inches, weighs 110 to 135 pounds and has light brown or dark blonde hair cut at the length of 10 to 12 inches.

Forensic anthropologist Leslie E. Eisenberg noted that the woman was knock-kneed, pigeon-toed or both. Fink said the woman would have had a distinctive walk that will hopefully help identify her.

Detective Charles Sosinski presented a mannequin dressed in the exact clothes found on the woman. He said the Angels blue jeans — currently available for purchase — would typically be found at a store similar to Kohl’s and the spaghetti-strapped Zoey Beth top — with a pink bow on the back — could be purchased at Family Dollar. The girl was found with no shoes or socks.

“A picture is worth a thousand words,” Fink said. “I’m hoping (press) coverage of this story will able to put a face and a name to the case.”

Lt. Bill Flood said the body is estimated to be outside for 30 to 90 days, and the cause of death is still undetermined. More details on length of time after death will surface when forensic entomologist Neal Haskell finishes studying bugs found at the scene.

Fink said the dental profile is currently in the National Crime Investigation Center database and DNA results will also be entered. However, if the woman was never reported as missing, she could remain “Jane Doe” forever.

Update: Fond du Lac Sheriff says there are no leads on ID of human remains

http://www.thenorthwestern.com/article/20081222/OSH0101/81222091/1128/OSH01

December 22, 2008

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) - The partially decomposed remains found a month ago by deer hunters in a creek were those of a female 15 to 21 years old who was probably knock-kneed and pigeon-toed, Fond du Lac County Sheriff Mick Fink said Monday.

"How she walked and carried herself would be a distinctive characteristic," the sheriff said.

Investigators believe she died in late summer or early fall but her identity remained a mystery.

"We are up against it here and we know that," Fink said. "Anything is a possibility. I wouldn’t rule out anything."

Hunters found the remains Nov. 23 in a creek 17 miles south of Fond du Lac.

Investigators believe she was murdered based on the isolated area where the body was found, but Fink said her cause of death was unknown.

Experts determined the victim was white but could not rule out that she had Hispanic ancestry, the sheriff said.

The victim was wearing a Zoey Beth brand black top with pink trim that had a belt tie in back and size three Angels brand jeans, Fink said. She weighed 110 to 135 pounds, stood between 4 foot 9 and 5 foot 4 tall and had long, light brown hair, the sheriff said.

"That’s best we can do at this point," he said. "Maybe somebody will recognize the clothes. Somebody might say, ’I borrowed that shirt to somebody or I know somebody who walked knock-kneed and pigeon-toed’ and hasn’t seen them for a while. That is basically what you are hoping for."

Detectives have investigated about 20 leads inquiring about the remains but have ruled them all out, Fink said.

If the victim was a teenager, she could have been a runaway, the sheriff said, indicating Milwaukee police routinely list 400 active runaways.

Nationally, 814,967 people got listed as missing or runaways in 2007 and all but about 1,700 were eventually found, Fink said.

"That tells you what we are up against here," he said.

More Details Released in Mysterious Homicide

http://www.wbay.com/Global/story.asp?S=9566622

by Natalie Arnold

For the first time, we are getting a good idea of what the victim looks like in Fond du Lac County's Jane Doe investigation.

A group of hunters actually found the body last month in a wooded area just off Skyline Drive in the Town of Ashford.

Since the discovery, investigators have not been able to figure out the woman's identity but are releasing photos of what the girl looked like.

The mannekin, Fond du Lac County investigators say, is a good representation of what the woman found in the woods looks like.

The clothes are an exact replica of what she was wearing the day her body was found.

"The top that she's wearing is sold through Family Dollar store and the jeans would be sold through stores such as Kohls or that type of department store," explained Detective Charles Sosinski of the Fond du Lac Sheriff's Department.

Investigators know now a lot of her characteristics.

The young white woman could be as young as 15 and as old as 21. She is around 5'1" to 110 to 135 pounds. Her hair is light brown or dark blonde, roughly 12 inches long.

What they also discovered about the young woman is that she was either knock-kneed, pigeon-toed or both- which means they say - the way she walked was very distinctive. So far they haven't been able to determine the cause of death, but they believe the body was left in the woods either late summer or early fall.

And since no one in Wisconsin has come forward to claim her, they believe the young woman is from somewhere else in the country.

"It's a matter of getting our information out as far as possible away from this area into bigger metropolitan areas," said Lieutenant Bill Flood, "I think our answer lies there."

They hope the mannequin will help solve the mystery.

Yes, I would imagine that top is pretty distinctive with that stand out pink on it. Surely someone must recognize that top and know who the woman is? :innocent0001:

I'm thinking teen turned hooker. She probably wore flip-flops. I wonder if LE looked around for those. If they were found in the woods it might mean she died in the woods. If they aren't found it might mean she died elsewhere and was dumped.

Good thinking KM. Whether the shoes were found or not would definately give a good indication of whether she was killed there or not.

I pray someone recognise's her and knows her name.

I understand letting us know what stores tend to sell the clothes she was in, but what also needs to be stressed is that she very well could have gotten these clothes from a Second Hand Store like Salvation Army or Good Will. The fact that the top came from Family Dollar and the jeans are sold by stores like Kohl's, that IMO is pretty telling that she more than likely did get these clothes from a used clothing store. There is a huge difference in price between Family Dollar and Kohl's. I think this is probably a young runaway. Sadly prostitution could very well play a part in this. The clothes IMO are not unique enough, I think their best bet is the physical aspect. Especially the walk this young lady had. That is the most telling piece of info so far. I hope they can give this young lady her identity back. I absolutely despise the words "Jane Doe" and "John Doe". I understand why they are used, I just hate it though.

No new leads on identity of body found in Wis.

FOND DU LAC, Wis. (AP) - Ten days after authorities released new details about the partially decomposed remains of a woman found in a creek, her identity remains a mystery.

Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Lt. Bill Flood said Wednesday the new details generated about 15 leads but none panned out.

Hunters found the remains Nov. 23 in a creek 17 miles south of Fond du Lac. Investigators believe the woman was murdered because the body was found in an isolated area, but the cause of death is unknown.

Flood says dental remains from the victim have been compared with those of 5 missing people but none matched.

Authorities say the remains are those of a 15- to 21-year-old who was probably knock-kneed and pigeon-toed.

ITA Amused. This is such a sad case. Somewhere out there SOMEONE is looking for her and has no clue that she has been found. I hope they figure out who she is soon.

As for the clothing, personally I buy most of my clothes AND my children's clothes from a thrift store. They have SO many different brands/styles that IMO, there is no way to get much information from this unless someone recognizes the particular items as something that someone they know owns.

Reconstruction of face planned in Fond du Lac Co. 'Jane Doe' case

By Russell Plummer • The Reporter rcplummer@fdlreporter.com • January 29, 2009

The Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department wants to put a face on the "Jane Doe" homicide.

No strong leads developed after investigators presented a mannequin in late December dressed in the exact clothing of the woman whose body was found the morning of Nov. 23 in a wooded area behind W4617 Skyline Drive in the town of Ashford.
Now, Lt. Bill Flood is turning to technology to help solve his detective bureau's only "Jane Doe" case.
"What we're doing now is utilizing the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children to digitally reconstruct her face based on photographs of the skull and her face as it appeared when we found her," Flood said.
The wait for the digitally reconstructed face could take three months. If that process is unsuccessful, Flood said he is talking to forensic experts about possibly reconstructing the woman's face with clay.
Flood added that all information on the "Jane Doe" homicide was re-entered with a dental profile into the National Crime Information Center.
"We have gotten a couple pages of possible hits (from the NCIC)," Flood said. "Some of them can be ruled out by just looking at (race or gender)."
He noted help may arrive when the University of Texas finishes using skeletal remains to create a DNA profile that can be entered in the Combined DNA Indexing System, a FBI funded national database.
Case review

Flood said he, his detectives and Fond du Lac County Medical Examiner Douglas Kelley met last week to discuss what has been done, what they know and where they are going with the investigation.
"Each detective is trying to think of how to develop new leads or new ideas that might help us find out who she is and where she is from," Flood said. "(Detectives are) checking various aspects of the area (where she was found), continuing to make contact with bigger law enforcement agencies and scouring all the missing persons resources that are out there. We are trying to get our information out far enough so it can touch somebody else's."
Flood said the Sheriff's Department hoped presenting the mannequin would grab the attention of a family member, friend or boyfriend.
During a December press conference, Sheriff Mick Fink said "Jane Doe" was a white 15- to 21-year-old female. However, Hispanic ancestry could not be ruled out.
The woman was 5 feet 1 inch tall, give or take 3 inches, weighed 110 to 135 pounds and had light brown or dark blonde hair cut about 10- to 12-inches long.
She was wearing Angels blue jeans typically found at a store like Kohl's and a spaghetti-strap Zoey Beth top — with a pink bow on the back — available at Family Dollar.
The female was found with no shoes or socks.
Forensic anthropologist Leslie Eisenberg noted that the woman was knock-kneed, pigeon-toed or both. Fink said the woman would have had a distinctive walk that will hopefully help identify her.

Fond du Lac investigators hope a new facial reconstruction photo will help them identify a Jane Doe. Hunters found a woman's body decomposing in a frozen creek in the woods in November. The Sheriff believes she was murdered but since then the case has stalled. The problem? No one has identified her and time is the enemy.

" My concern is what began as a cold case is going to get nothing but colder," says Sheriff Mylan Fink.

That's why with the help of the Center for Missing and Exploited Children they created a composite photo. It's based off of forensic evidence and shows what the 15-21 year old victim may have looked like. Experts also told detectives the woman may be Caucasian. She may also be Hispanic, Asian or Native American.

"There is a very high probability she is not from our area," says Sheriff Fink.

And so today the department also posted the photo on customized "Jane Doe" MySpace and Facebook pages.

"I'm gonna stir this thing up as much as I can because I want to get this kid home. If nothing else the kid deserves to go home and be buried by her family," says Sheriff Fink.

An ending, so the homicide investigation can begin.

Investigators also say the woman had another defining characteristic, she was knock-kneed or pigeon toed.

Solving a Jane Doe case is often a struggle for investigators.

A Jane Doe found in Fond du Lac last fall still has investigators puzzled. Hunters found the body last fall.

Authorities believe victim is between 15 and 21 years old. She's about 5'1" and between 110 and 135 pounds.

A computer-generated sketch was released in June but her identity remains a mystery and investigators say it's possible she's not from Wisconsin.

"We have a demo profile and we have a DNA profile, and now we have a visual reconstruction or recreation of her face, and it's circulated coast-to-coast. I don't know what more we can possibly do. We're waiting to find that one lead that will give us a break," Lieutenant Bill Flood of the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Department said.

Investigators are even using social networking websites like Facebook and MySpace hoping to attract a national audience through the Internet.

So far it's resulted in only a handful of tips.

"What we are trying to do is stack the deck, so to speak, in our favor as much as we possibly can, to jog someone's memory, just have one of those light bulbs turn on, to send us in the right direction," Lt. Flood said.

Detectives say cases like this are especially frustrating since they can't begin to solve the crime if the victim doesn't have an identity.

"Once we do get her body identified, our Jane Doe identified, that gives the detectives something to really sink their teeth into at that point."

In the meantime, investigators can only hope a picture generates a big break.

'Jane Doe' now has Facebook page

By Russell Plummer • The Reporter • August 19, 2009

The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children gave Fond du Lac County’s “Jane Doe” a face.

Fond du Lac County Sheriffhttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif (http://www.fdlreporter.com/article/20090819/FON0101/90818123/1319/FON0205/-Jane-Doe--now-has-Facebook-page#) Mick Fink has vowed to be her voice.
And detectives now hope the world’s most popular open source database can help give her a name.
On Monday, a series of e-mails and a court order written by Fond du Lac County Circuit Court Judge Dale English paid off when “Jane Doe” got her own page on the Web site Facebook.
Three deer hunters found the body of a woman on Nov. 23, 2008, in a wooded area behind W4617 Skyline Drive in the town of Ashford. Since then, even with a reconstruction of her face, no solid leads have formed, said Lt. Bill Flood.
Detective Charles Sosinski announced during a June press conference he was creating a Web page for the woman on social networkinghttp://images.intellitxt.com/ast/adTypes/mag-glass_10x10.gif (http://www.fdlreporter.com/article/20090819/FON0101/90818123/1319/FON0205/-Jane-Doe--now-has-Facebook-page#) Web sites Facebook and Myspace.
“It’s a grassroots type of approach, but it does give us national and international travel and exposure,” Sosinski said. “Hopefully, it will just continue to grow as it is networked.”
Trying to get the homicide victim online has not been easy.
Facebook’s security staff determined using the name “Jane Doe” was a terms of use violation and removed the page, said Sosinski. The Sheriff’s Department worked with a Facebook attorney to resolve the issue.
People can find the woman’s Facebook page by searching for “Jane Doe” under “pages.” The page has her composite photo, pictures of the clothes she was wearing the day she was found, contact information for the Sheriff’s Department and a description of her.
The woman was 5-foot, 1-inch tall, give or take three inches, weighed 110 to 135 pounds and had light brown or dark blonde hair cut at a length of 10 to 12 inches.
She was wearing Angels blue jeans and a spaghetti-strap Zoey Beth top.
Forensic anthropologist Leslie Eisenberg noted that the woman was knock-kneed, pigeon-toed or both. Fink said the woman would have had a distinctive walk that will hopefully help identify her.
The cause of death remains undetermined, said Flood.
Forensic entomologist Neal Haskell’s study of bugs found at the scene revealed her body began to decompose sometime between mid summer and Labor Day of 2008.

"Wisconsin investigators on Friday ruled out the possibility that a body found in a field there last year might be that of missing Cleveland teen Amanda Berry.

Deputies at the Fond du Lac County Sheriff's Office initially believed there were striking similarities between Amanda and the body found by deer hunters in November. But test results comparing Amanda's DNA and that of the body came back negative, deputies said.

Amanda disappeared on April 21, 2003, a day before her 17th birthday. She had just left work at the Burger King at West 110th Street and Lorain Avenue, about a 10-minute walk from home. She called her sister to say she was getting a ride home, but her family never heard from her again.

Detectives believe the woman in Wisconsin was killed elsewhere and was alive at least 90 days before her body was found in a wooded area on private land between Appleton and Milwaukee. The body showed she had had exten sive dental work and ei ther had ac cess to dental insurance or money to pay for the dental work, officials said.

Some of the woman's teeth showed similarities to Amanda's teeth and warranted DNA testing.

"She has been ruled out," sheriff's Lt. Bill Flood said about Amanda. "It's not her."

Jane Doe's Anniversary Passes With No Answers to Her Identity
Updated: Nov 23, 2009 8:12 PM EST

It was one year ago Monday that hunters in Fond du Lac County discovered the body of a woman.

Described as either white or Hispanic, investigators believe the teenager or young woman was murdered then dumped in the woods near the Fond du Lac-Washington county line.

They still don't know who she is. After an entire year, Fond du Lac County's Jane Doe homicide investigation fits in a box. It doesn't even fill the box.

"We've checked all the leads that have come in, continue to run into dead ends. It's frustrating. It's difficult," Detective Cameron McGee said.

And this is after showing the public similar clothes to what the woman was last wearing, putting her DNA and dental records into a national database, and creating a facial reconstruction of what she might have looked like and posting it worldwide on social-networking web sites, including Facebook.

"How she got there and who she is, we're not any further than we were 365 days ago" Sheriff Mick Fink said.

The biggest problem, the sheriff says, is that the right people aren't seeing her picture. He believes it is highly unlikely Jane Doe is from the Fond du Lac County area and not even Northeast Wisconsin.

"That goes into my frustration that we can't seem to get it out any farther than the local news markets," Sheriff Fink said. "And I've tried. I've called and I've sent emails to Fox News, I've sent them to Nancy Grace."

They need that big break. Then, the sheriff says, they can start figuring out what happened to the young woman and who took her life.

"We've tried. It isn't for lack of trying that we haven't identified Jane Doe, but at some point you do exhaust about all you can do," the sheriff said.

What a shame that the sheriff has tried to get this information out past the local news market to no avail. She could be from anywhere and these pictures sure do need to be circulated.

More than a year later, police still seek dead woman's identity
December 29, 2009

Fond du Lac County Sheriff Mick Fink has been the voice of a murdered woman for more than a year.

As the case of "Jane Doe" enters 2010, members of the Sheriff's Department remain hopeful someone else will come forward and tell the young woman's tale.

At about 9 a.m. on Nov. 23, 2008, in the town of Ashford, three hunters found the body partially submerged in a frozen creek in a wooded area behind W4617 Skyline Drive.

Before 2008 came to a close, the Sheriff's Department presented a mannequin dressed in the exact clothing found on the homicide victim. In June, Fink once again stood before reporters and television cameras hoping a computer-generated face of "Jane Doe" would ignite a case slowly growing cold.

As 2010 approaches, Lt. Bill Flood, head of the Sheriff's Department's detective bureau, is seeking a breakthrough that will send Detectives Cameron McGee and Gerry Kane on the search for the killer.

"We're trying to do everything possible to get her information out there," Flood said. "We're trying to think of more creative ways to get her information out in a different medium. Any leads we do get in, we follow them up in a thorough, complete and timely fashion."

On Dec. 23, McGee said he investigated a potential match from Chicago found through doenetwork.org, a volunteer organization devoted to assisting law enforcement in solving cold cases of disappearances and unidentified victims. However, a phone call to the woman's mother and comparison of dental records led to another dead end.

"As the holidays come and people start lamenting on their lives and their families, there may be some type of spark and somebody may say, 'We haven't heard from her in a long time,'" Flood said.

"Jane Doe's" information is posted on the Sheriff's Department's Web site, and Detective Charles Sosinski even overcame legal issues in 2009 to create a page for the victim on the world's largest social-networking site, Facebook.

"The frustrating thing with these types of cases for all of law enforcement is that you run into a wall and that wall holds you back from the investigative effort you are so ready, willing and able to launch," Flood said. "Once we find out who she is, that's when everything starts."

McGee said an ID would lead to a background profile of the victim and interviewing family, friends, boyfriends, girlfriends and anyone who had contact with "Jane Doe."

"It was disappointing nothing solid came of (the case) in 2009, to say the least," McGee said.

The woman was 5-feet, 1-inch tall, give or take three inches, weighed 110 to 135 pounds and had light brown or dark blonde hair cut 10 to 12 inches long.

She was wearing Angels blue jeans and a spaghetti-strapped Zoey Beth top.

Forensic anthropologist Leslie Eisenberg noted that the woman was knock-kneed, pigeon-toed or both. Fink said the woman would have had a distinctive walk that will hopefully help identify her.

Forensic entomologist Neal Haskell's study of bugs found at the scene revealed her body began to decompose sometime between mid summer and Labor Day of 2008.
