Missing Vinton County man's body found
By 10TV News • December 11, 2008

MCARTHUR — Investigators found the body of a 78-year-old man who had not been seen since November in the woods on Wednesday.

George Nichols' daughter, Susie Knight, last saw her father in Ross County on Nov. 24, Gazette partner 10TV News' Lindsey Seavert reported.

"I said, 'Dad, what are you doing out? (The weather's) bad, be careful," Knight said.

Knight said her father suffered from Alzheimer's.

"He wouldn't have remembered to take his medicine," Knight said.

Searchers found Nichols' car vandalized and destroyed last week.

"He left the truck with the door open, the keys in it and the hood opened," Knight said.

A search dog tracked Nichols' scent and the Vinton County Sheriff's Department discovered his body in the woods off a rural road, Seavert reported.

Knight said he believes her father was trying to get home when he got lost.

"I was positive in my heart that he was still alive somewhere," Knight said. "I'm hoping and praying there's no foul play. We will find out when the investigation is done."

The sheriff's office arrested two teenagers for vandalizing Nichols' vehicle.

Investigators said there were no obvious signs of of foul play. An autopsy was scheduled for today to determine the cause of death.

Body Of Missing Alzheimer's Patient Found

Vinton County, OH--Vinton County Sheriff’s Deputies have recovered the body of 78-year old George Nichols of Londonderry, Ohio. Authorities tell NBC 4’s Paul Stelzer that foul play is not suspected in his death. Nichols was last seen alive on November 24th when he left a friend’s house, family members reported him missing the next day. Deputies believed he intended to drive to the store, but may have gotten confused.

December 2nd, a man on an atv trail a few miles from Nichols’ home found the car Nichols was driving, it had been vandalized and now two 13-year old boys have been charged in conjunction with that. Sheriff Hickey says the boys have nothing do to with the death or disappearance of Nichols. Yesterday, K9’s searched the area and found Nichols’ body in a ravine about 150 yards where the vehicle was found.

November 25th, a Silver Alert was issued by the Vinton County Sheriff’s Office. Vinton County Sheriff David Hickey said that despite Nichols’ death, the Silver Alert System worked by getting the word out. Multiple calls and tips were received in the office which is a sign that the public take these alerts serious and want to help out in any way they can.

Sheriff Hickey is still awaiting the final cause of death from the coroner.

McARTHUR, Ohio -- The body of a 78-year-old Vinton County man who was reported missing Nov. 24 was found yesterday in the woods about 12 miles from his home.

George Nichols, who lived near Londonderry, was curled up in a fetal position, and it appears he might have died of exposure, Vinton County Sheriff David Hickey told WBNS-TV (Channel 10).

Nichols' car was located Dec. 2 after an ATV rider reported finding it along a path northwest of McArthur. A deputy with a search dog found the body in thick brush about 200 yards away about 5:30 p.m. yesterday.

The car had been vandalized, but investigators don't suspect foul play in Nichols' death. Two teenagers were arrested for the vandalism, but are not suspects in the death, Hickey said.

Nichols had Alzheimer's disease, and investigators think he became disoriented while driving home from dinner with a neighbor, then wandered away from his car when it became trapped on the narrow ATV path.

The Franklin County coroner's office will perform an autopsy today.

Vinton man's death not suspicious
Exposure likely cause of death for 78-year-old missing since November

http://www.chillicothegazette.com/article/20081213/NEWS01/812130302/1002

By ASHLEY PHILLIPS • Gazette staff writer • December 13, 2008

Although an autopsy report has not been completed on a Vinton County man with Alzheimer's disease whose body was discovered earlier this week, it appears simple exposure was the cause of death.

George Nichols, 78, had been missing since the end of November. His body was discovered Wednesday in the woods off a rural road.

According to Vinton County Sheriff Dave Hickey, his office does not suspect foul play. Authorities believe Nichols simply wandered away from his residence and died as a result of being out in the cold.

"I haven't received the autopsy report, but if there was something suspicious, I would know by now," he said.

Resolution of the situation may have been impacted if Vinton County had been involved with a program pioneered in Ross County to help find people with Alzheimer's and other dementia-related diseases.

Project Lifesaver is a program operated by the Ross County Sheriff's Office to help monitor people who may leave their surroundings. Those for whom wandering away is a concern are monitored with an electronic device on their wrist similar to a watch, and their movement is then tracked by the sheriff's office.

Lt. Dale Gillette, of the Ross County Sheriff's Office, said the program has been very successful in helping find missing people who may get lost and can't find their way back home.

"We have trained close to 40 agencies across the state on Project Lifesaver," he said.

According to Gillette, the only counties surrounding Ross that have not been trained on Project Lifesaver are Vinton and Fayette counties.

Hickey said he would be open to learn more about Project Lifesaver and possibly have it implemented in his office as well.

"We use the silver alert, which is designed to look for senior citizens, but we would also like to explore other options as well," Hickey said.

For more information on Project Lifesaver, contact the sheriff's office at 773-1186 or visit projectlifesaver.org.

Missing Vinton County man died of hypothermia

http://dispatch.com/live/content/local_news/stories/2008/12/15/mrnichols.html?sid=101

McARTHUR, Ohio -- An elderly, disoriented Vinton County man whose body was found in the woods Dec. 10 after he was reported missing Nov. 24 died of hypothermia, Jackson County Coroner Gregory Hawker said today.

"He died of hypothermia due to being exposed out in the cold for that length of time," said Hawker, who also serves as coroner in Vinton County. Hawker received the results of an autopsy performed last week by the Franklin County coroner's office.

George Nichols, 78, who had Alzheimer's disease, was driving home after having dinner with a friend when he took a wrong turn off Rt. 50 and wound up on an all-terrain-vehicle path, Vinton County Sheriff David Hickey said last week.

His body was found about 150 yards from his car. Nichols, apparently disoriented as he wandered away from his car on the unfamiliar ATV path, had tripped over a small log. One of the flip-flops that he was wearing on his feet apparently caught on the log. His body was found curled in a fetal position near the log. He had pulled the hood of his coat up over his head, as if he were lying down to sleep, Hickey said.

There were no signs of foul play, Hickey said.

Two 13-year-old boys have been charged in connection with vandalizing the elderly man's car, which they stumbled across in the woods before his body was found. They did not see his body, which was in thick brush, Hickey said.

A search dog led a deputy to Nichols' body Dec. 10.
