Hey, this is a start...let's get these creatures that hurt the innocent animals....

Description/History:
Maureen McLaughlin has admitted to drowning over 650 dogs, pups, cats and kittens since July of 2002. She has kept pieces of fur of each animal and labelled them so she can remember each one, like a serial killer would remember his victims.

These poor animals were put in a pet carrier and submerged into a trashcan of water. This is a most horrific death!!
Petition:
As pet lovers and animal welfare groups, we petition Prosecutor Bill Hedrick to prosecute Ms. McLaughlin to the full extent of the law. This woman MUST not get away with the senseless murder of more than 650 companion animals in this state.

Please review the news story at the following site.

Not taking it the wrong way, simply glad I can spead the word to a number of people in Ohio, who can make their voice heard on the issue. I can't believe this isn't major news all over the state. This is vile and disgusting, and a person who is capable of doing this to defenseless animals is perfectly capable of graduating to human beings. Jen and I and our faithful canine compainions, Joplin and Trey all thank you.

I think this was in the Enquirer this week. Every week they have an article on animal abusers. I can't always read it, but I did read this one.

I think it said her neighbors thought she was finding homes for all those poor animals, but she was really killing them. :1187603408.CR.Mothe

Wonder how she'd like to be put in a large dog cage and slowly submerged into a large tub of water, knowing there was no way out of that cage.

Not usually a "line-jumper", BUT, here I go...)

Tracian,

Thank you for bringing this case to the attention of all here. So difficult to believe. I have signed the petition with my name, and proud to do so. I'm passing it on to others.

This story should have national coverage!

I was sick when I read this case, I admit, I buy the Enquirer often, a dubious pleasure I guess, but their stories about these so called humans that murder animals have proven to be most accurate; sad, but true.

I suggest that we all keep up on other cases, and post them, so maybe, we can take a 'bite' out of such horrors.

Any carbon based life form that can justify such actions against innocent animals is only a whisper away from getting a child, like another learnerd poster mentioned; knowledge is power.

I think it is very telling, when someone that is as socially active as I know Janicelee is, was not even aware of this case when it happened in her state---I have known Janice for a long while, and she is on top of things, so for her not to have known, it is clear that crimes against innocent animals is sadly ignored by 'mainstream' media.

Thank you all so much for checking out this story and lending your support...what a great bunch of people Harlett and her staff have on these boards.

I think that's why the Enquirer started doing a weekly article on animal abusers. They have so many people reading the Enquirer, that they're hoping people will respond to their article and take action.

I know that I respond to each one of their articles.

Thank you, Enquirer!! :hifive:

The Enquirer it is then! Had no idea it was publishing reports on animal abuse. And weekly!!! Guess I'll have to change my mind about the Enquirer.
Will pick-up my first copy (ever) tomorrow.

:duh:Embarrassing, but I haven't been able to access the story. I make it to the page but is blank except for the ads, etc. on the sides of the page. Even when I searched there (using "McLaughlin" & animal abuse) no dice, although several stories relating to animals came up. Any suggestions!!!

The sheriff's department arrested 17-year-old Jeffrey Pomeroy Tuesday night. They said he took a one-week-old pit bull puppy from his ex-girlfriend's house, beat it with a baseball bat, set it on fire and buried it in the back yard.

Pomeroy says he's being framed by his ex-girlfriend. In an effort to prove his he gave a tour of his property to show that no dog’s body was ever buried there. As he walked thru the long grass in the yard, it appeared intact. Then he showed the space under the trailer where he lives.

“They (the police) said I took it and buried it under the house. As you can see, there's no holes dug, or smell of dead carcass, “ he said, adding, “there’s no blood, no footprints, no nothing.”

Pomeroy claimed that he never stole a puppy from his girlfriend's Hope Mills home, despite the charges filed in court.
“They say I maliciously tortured, maimed, cruelly beat, disfigured, poisoned and killed a dog. I would never do that,” he said.

His 24-yr-old ex-girlfriend was not home when NBC 17 called. Neighbors say Sandra Harrell told them she'd be out of town a few days. Although she isn't speaking, her sister told NBC-17 that Pomeroy is a dangerous person.

"He causes problems, and we've had the cops out here before," said neighbor Dana Laster, “he kidnapped a pet and also kicked in a mailbox … he's doing it all in revenge because he did date my sister and they called it quits. He's just a violent person.”

Meanwhile Jeff says several of the dogs penned up at Sandra Harrell's home are also his and claims the dog killing accusations are revenge because he's got a new girlfriend.

“Sandra got mad about that,” he said. “She got resentments. She’s jealous and she's taking it out on me …I don't appreciate the charges because I'm facing six years in prison for this stuff."

Pomeroy’s next court appearance is August 15th.

The long awaited animal cruelty trial of DeShawn Brown is finally underway. Brown faces charges of animal cruelty and use of a deadly weapon, a third-degree felony punishable with up to 10 years in prison if convicted.

In April of 2006, two men found a young female pit bull in horrifying condition and took her to Operation Kindness shelter. Initially it was thought that she was stabbed, dragged and doused with corrosive chemicals. It soon became clear though, what happened to the poor dog, named Mercy, by shelter workers.

“It was horrifying,” said Jonnie England with Operation Kindness. “One side looks like she’d been drug behind a car. The other side looks like multiple stab wounds.”

This is “one of the worst cases of apparent abuse that we have seen,” said England. “The vet thought that she had suffered chemical burns on her body and inside her ears,” said England.

She has been brutally cut, stabbed, doused with gasoline and set on fire. Despite the intensive efforts of veterinarians and workers, after ten days Mercy succumbed to her injuries and died.

When confronted, Brown gave two different stories of how ‘Brandy, wound up with burns over 60% of her body. First he told the police that she bumped into a grill then days later he told them he owed some guys some money and they burned her in retaliation.

Witnesses though told a wholly different story. A woman came forward and told how Brown tried to get his female to mate with her male. When things didn’t work out she said he got angry and repeated kicked the dog.

The woman followed Brown “at a distance and next observed his dog to have cuts (and) stab wounds.”

Another man said saw Brown’s dog on fire and running through the parking lot; he later saw Brown carrying a gas can, the reports said.

After an intensive investigation, Brown was arrested and charged in the torture and abuse death of the sweet natured dog named Mercy by those who tried to save her life.

Operation Kindness volunteers, staff and community members had some closure in the death of Mercy, a 10-month-old puppy, after a memorial service and an arrest in the case.

The no-kill shelter held a memorial service for Mercy in April after receiving a large amount of response about her case. Hundreds of people gathered at Operation Kindness to honor the life of Mercy. A memorial service was held and afterward people passed by her spot placing candles and trinkets. “One of our staff members wrote a poem from Mercy to everyone who supported her,” said Jonnie England, Operation Kindness executive director.

Music artist Maria Daines was so moved by Mercy’s story that she wrote a song dedicated to Mercy’s memory and the tragedy that she endured. To listen to the song and read the lyrics, click here.

On August 3, the Dallas County Grand Jury today indicted DeShawn Quatrail Brown of a 3rd-degree felony for killing Mercy.

The 3rd-degree felony indictment is for Cruelty to Animals With the Finding of a Deadly Weapon, which carries a maximum 10-year prison sentence. Brown was originally charged with a State Jail Felony, which carries a maximum of 2 years in prison.

In mid July, 2007, DeShawn Brown turned down a plea deal that would have sent him to prison for eight years.

Jury selection in the trial began Monday and opening statements were schedule for 9 am Tuesday.

Browns mother, Sandra claims her son is innocent and that she never got to tell her side of the story, “He would never hurt a dog. Public opinion is that he did this, without hearing the facts. And to me, that is an injustice not just for my son, but for anybody that is facing any type of situation in court. He loved that dog. He loves all of his dogs,” said Sandra. “He still has his dog from when he was a small child.”

“Everyone is innocent until proven guilty in our justice system,” said Jonnie England with Operation Kindness. “From what evidence I’ve seen and heard throughout the last 17 months, I think that the state has as strong case. It is personal for me and many of us here. She’s become a symbol for animal cruelty, I think, and victims of animal cruelty.”

Witness in animal cruelty trial testifies of helping burning 'Mercy'

10:30 PM CDT on Tuesday, September 25, 2007
By TIARA M. ELLIS / The Dallas Morning News
tellis@dallasnews.com

Willie Cantu had just finished work one day last year and was out walking his Chihuahua when he heard the painful wails of another dog.

Operation Kindness/FILE 2006
Mercy, a pit-bull mix, died shortly after a plasma transfusion at a veterinary clinic where she was receiving treatment for her injuries. "I hear a yelp, like a really loud bark," Mr. Cantu said Tuesday as he testified on the first day of the animal cruelty trial of Deshawn Brown. "Then I see an engulfed flame going down the street."

Mr. Cantu said he and two other men cornered the burning dog, who became known as Mercy, and while Mr. Cantu used his shirt to smother the flames, the other two men poured beer on the animal.

"I had singed hair all over me, like charcoal and ash," Mr. Cantu testified. "The smell was really intense – singed smell of hair, gasoline and burned skin."

Mercy, who was also stabbed, died 10 days later. Mr. Brown, 22, is charged with animal cruelty and faces up to 10 years in prison. In July, Mr. Brown rejected a plea deal for an eight-year sentence.

His attorney, Dan Wyde, said Tuesday that his client is innocent.

"Not one witness is going to come forward and say they saw Mr. Brown hurt this dog," Mr. Wyde told the jury.

But prosecutor David Alex said Mr. Brown was angry because he was being evicted from his North Dallas apartment, and his dog – whom he named Brandy – wouldn't breed.

"This case is serious, because when a person stares into the face of unconditional love, and in response to that douses their pet with a flammable liquid and ignites it on fire, these are actions of torture; sadistic acts of torture," Mr. Alex told the jury during his opening statement.

In April 2006, said Forrest Pyle, 17, he was hanging out with Mr. Brown at the apartment complex. He grudgingly described seeing Mr. Brown take Mercy behind a trash bin with a knife in hand, hearing the dog yelp, and then watching her scurry into view.

"He came out and threw the knife down," Mr. Pyle said of Mr. Brown. "I never really seen him hurt the dog. I just seen the dog and seen the knife."

After Mr. Cantu and the other men aided the dog, police arrived and allowed Mr. Brown – who showed up on his bike carrying a gasoline can – to keep the dog with the assurance that he'd seek medical attention for her, Mr. Alex said.

The next day, Austin Holt, a resident in the same apartment complex, noticed the dog running outside his patio window. Initially, Mr. Holt said, he did not know what was wrong with the animal.

He attempted to give her water and food but she would not take it. Mr. Holt said he thought she might have mange and was afraid to touch her. So he and a friend took her to Operation Kindness, a no-kill shelter in Carrollton.

In court Tuesday, two veterinarians testified for the prosecution, using grisly photographs to help describe how Mercy was burned over 60 percent of her body and to show her two puncture wounds.

Mr. Wyde, however, contended that the prosecution's case is weak. He said some of the witnesses should not be believed because they were influenced to come forward by reward money. In addition, Mr. Wyde said, other potential suspects were ignored by police.

Sandra Brown, Mr. Brown's mother, would not talk about her son's case Tuesday. But she issued a written statement declaring that he would never torture or kill his own dog. She described how he cared for several pets, including two other dogs, two cats and a snake.

"My son lived in an apartment and would call me and ask if he could bring his dogs over to run around my back yard because they have been in the apartment all day," Ms. Brown said.
