Wesley "Bucky" King
As America's population ages the number of people needing care, be they elderly or a dependent adult, will continue to grow.
Two men from South Central Kansas have wandered off in just the past week. Eyewitness News looks at the difficult task of finding them and bringing them home.
Wesley King, or Bucky as he's often called, is not well. And not at home. The 59-year-old takes medication for schizophrenia and diabetes.
Eight days ago, Bucky walked out of his mother's southeast Wichita apartment where he was living and no one, not police, not his family has seen him since.
Iona Frelin and Elliott Brunt say they naturally fear the worst for their brother. Iona says, "It's just no word. No sitings. Nothing."
They say without taking his medication, Bucky is prone to nervous breakdowns and dangerous sugar levels.
"I just want him home. The holidays are coming up," Iona said.
Shawn Burditt's family wants the same. The South Hutchinson man walked away from friends and onto some walking trails more than a week ago.
Kristin Markham is a friend of Burditt's. She says, "We've never known him to be gone this long at all. So, it's real concerning with the weather the way it is. It's cold right now."
"The sooner you call us, the sooner we can get started looking. And get the wheels in motion," Wichita Police Sergeant Kelly Mar said.
Wichita police are in constant contact with the family once a missing person report is filed.
Officers search while families, like Bucky's, continue checking with shelters and scouring neighborhoods in hopes of finding him.
"I've just been praying, praying and praying that he's going to show up," Iona said.
Iona says her brother Bucky likes taking walks. She and Elliott have gone to some of his favorite spots hoping to find him.
Wichita Police Sgt. Kelly Mar says most of these-type cases have a happy ending. The person is often found at a place that is familiar to them.
Both men are still missing.
If you have any information on Bucky king or Shawn Burditt, you should call 911.
