Still No Sign of Missing Boy

Halifax Co., VA - Even more search teams are out searching for a missing three-year-old Saturday. Police say Jaylynn Thorpe wandered from his babysitter's home around 4:00 p.m. Friday and they say they still don't have any leads.

It happened in the Virgilina community, just of Buckshoal Road. Family and friends have joined in the search, which police say is becoming a race against time. They searched all night and say they’ll do whatever it takes to find little Jaylynn. And as it gets colder outside, they know every second counts.

Jaylynn was last seen around 4:00 Friday. He's about 3 feet tall, and weighs around 40 pounds. He has a medium complexion, dark curly hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a red striped shirt, blue jeans and a camouflage jacket. Jaylynn also answers to J-J or Jay.

Right now, responders have search teams on the ground, helicopters in the air, and bloodhounds tracking the boy's scent. It is a difficult area to search because there are abandoned copper mines, lakes and creeks throughout the woods. Search teams have to be extra cautious. We're told every available tool that could help find this boy is in Virgilina right now, and that the search will not stop until the toddler is found.

One good thing, we're told 3 dogs may be with the boy and with no leads at this point, police and the family say those dogs might just save his life.

Sheriff Stanley Noblin, Halifax County Sheriff's Department - "They can be there to help keep him warm and hopefully if the dogs will come back, he'll follow the dogs back."

Katherine Elliott, Grandmother and Guardian - "I hope and pray they stick right by his footprint I just hope we find-- we all can find him and he's you know, okay."

The entire Virgilina community is out looking for this boy. If you want to help, stop by Grace Baptist Church to find out how. If you see Jaylynn, police ask that you call 434-476-3334.

Virgilina, Va. — Virginia sheriff's deputies began a search for a missing 3-year-old boy in a county along the state border Friday night.

Jaylynn Thorpe went missing from his home at 3210 Buckshoal Road in Virgilina, near South Boston, in the afternoon, Capt. Steve Cassada, with the Halifax County Sheriff's office, said. Deputies received a call about the missing boy around 4:30 p.m.

South Boston is in Virginia's Halifax County, north of North Carolina's Person and Granville counties.

Jaylynn has a medium complexion, curly brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a red, long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans, cowboy boots and a camouflage jacket.

Deputies said the last person to see Jaylynn was his babysitter, who is also the boy's cousin. Jaylynn is an outgoing toddler who is prone to wandering off, Cassada said.

Several hundred people, including volunteers and local authorities from North Carolina and Virginia, have helped search for the boy since Friday afternoon. On Saturday morning, certified tracking teams from both states took over, using people, dogs and helicopters.

The search has focused on a 3-mile radius around Jaylynn's house, Cassada said. The rural area is heavily wooded, and Virginia State Police dive teams searched shallow ponds.

Two small dogs were also missing from the house, and deputies think they followed Jaylynn. Cassada said he hopes the dogs helped keep the boy warm overnight.

A commander center has been set up at Grace Baptist Church, at Highway 58 and Buckshoal Road.

Anyone with information about Jaylynn's whereabouts was asked to call the Halifax County Sheriff's Office at 434-476-3334.

A missing toddler from Halifax County was found safe Saturday afternoon by Angel Search and Rescue of Danville.

Three-year-old Jaylynn Thorpe wandered away from Buskshoal Road in the Virgilina community on Friday shortly after 4 p.m., according to Halifax County officials.

He was found at about 12:30 p.m. Saturday about a half mile away from his home sitting on a log at a pond, according to news partner WSLS10.

Gary Goodson Jr., captain of Angel Search and Rescue, said the two puppies the child had with him helped keep him warm throughout the night.

“He was doing extremely well when our search teams found him,” Goodson said. “It’s really amazing, with as cool as the temperature got last night; it got down to about 24 degrees.”

Goodson had nothing but praise for the volunteers and professional rescue teams that turned out to search for the boy.

“There were about 300 different volunteers and professional searchers from all over the state and North Carolina,” Goodson said. “There were about 150 professional searchers at the scene.”

He said some of the professionals brought trained search dogs, others had special training in tracking footprints and other human signs and many were members of ground-team search crews.
A state police helicopter also joined the search.

“All our training has really paid off,” Goodson said of his 50-member team. “We been practicing and drilling for this kind of emergency, and it all came together really well.”

Halifax County Sheriff Stanley Noblin was not available for comment Saturday afternoon — but an official with the sheriff’s department said everyone involved in the all-night search had finally gone home to get some sleep.

Halifax Co., VA - Sarah Ingram, Mother - "When I first saw him, he was like, "Momma, I got cold. I slept in the woods last night. The puppies kept me warm." A three-year-old is back home safe and officials believe it was two dogs that saved his life. Authorities called it a race against time, tonight a missing toddler is alive and recovering in the hospital after spending the night lost in the woods. 3-year-old Jaylynn Thorpe went missing around 4 p-m yesterday, after wandering away from his babysitter. It happened just off Buckshoal Road in the Virgilina Community and the community just refused to give up hope. Even when things looked grim, the volunteers kept coming, the search teams kept working. Talking to people, the only way to describe this is a miracle. It was a sea of lights, sirens, search teams. A 3 year old, Jaylynn Thorpe lost in the woods, no clue as to where he had gone and temperatures dipping into the teens. James Thorpe, Father - "We didn't forget the issue that 17 degrees was almost unbearable." Katherine Elliott, Guardian and Grandmother - "People all over the state of Virginia was down there looking for that child. For a while there, one time, I didn't know whether they would find him or not." He was missing for 21 hours. A long time for anyone to be outside in the winter and alive. Sheriff Stanley Noblin, Halifax County Sheriff's Dept. - "The only thing we wanted to do was just keep searching until we found him." But something kept Jaylynn going, as he fought against time. Sarah Ingram, Mother - "God...and those dogs." Two puppies, that officials say, probably saved his life. “He told me that...the dogs slept up against him. And I'm sure the body heat kept him warm." He traveled half a mile to a mile in the dark, through dense woods, even crossing a highway. But it wasn't until Saturday afternoon that search teams found him, lying up against a tree, with the dogs. Noblin - I would definitely call this a miracle. Thorpe - I think I just said 'Thank you Lord' ...for us to have another chance!” Another chance to be a family. A miracle indeed. Jaylynn is expected to spend the night at Halifax Regional Hospital. We're told he's doing remarkably well. He's eaten a double cheeseburger, a hot dog, strawberry ice cream, and lots and lots of French fries. And his family says thank you, to all the people who prayed for Jaylynn, and helped bring him home.

Furry friends help a lost little boy in Halifax County

http://www.wdbj7.com/Global/story.asp?S=9467245&nav=S6bX

A Halifax County boy is safe and sound after spending a night outside. Though family members and rescue crews spent Friday night searching for the missing three-year-old, he had some friends nearby to keep him warm.

Jaylynn Thorpe wandered off late Friday afternoon from a relative's house near the woods on Buck Shoal Road. With the help of more than 200 volunteers and neighboring law enforcement agencies, search and rescue combed the area all night.

They found Jaylynn Saturday afternoon, less than half a mile from where he disappeared, but he wasn't alone.

"They found him around a log, the puppy was laying around him and they was covered up in leaves," says Jaylynn's uncle Michael Elliott.

Jaylynn's family says he and his aunt's puppies always run off and play together but never like this.

"We usually catch him right away," says Jaylynn's aunt Amy Zimmerman. "We whistle to him, he'll come back."

With Friday night's cold temperatures, the family was relieved to know he wasn't out in the cold by himself.

"He said he was hungry, he was cold, otherwise he was in good health and good spirits," says Halifax County Sheriff Stanley Noblin.

"Everyone had their doubts, but God came to me. Today was the day," says Jaylynn's mother Sara Ingram.

Jaylynn's mom is grateful to the entire community for turning her fears into a miracle.

The two hero puppies who saved Jaylynn's life.

A toddler lost in the Virginia woods was back home safe Sunday thanks to two puppies who kept him warm through a harrowing night of freezing temperatures.

Jaylynn Thorpe, 3, wandered away from his baby-sitter at 4 p.m. Friday and was missing for 21 hours as hundreds of friends, family and law enforcement officials searched for him in the thick woods of Halifax County, fearing the worst.

"The only thing we wanted to do was just keep searching until we found him," Halifax County Sheriff Stanley Noblin told reporters.

Jaylynn's frantic family knew time was not on its side.

"We didn't forget the issue that 17 degrees was almost unbearable," said his father, James Thorpe.

"People all over the State of Virginia was down there looking for that child. For a while there, one time, I didn't know whether they would find him or not," said the child's grandmother and guardian, Katherine Elliot.

Officials said the lost little boy and the two family puppies wandered up to a mile in the dark, even across a highway, but it wasn't until Saturday afternoon that members of the search team found him sitting by a tree, the two puppies nestled against him.

The little boy didn't say anything, according to rescue team member Jerry Gentry, but instead "just opened his arms up like, 'I'm ready to go.'"

"When I first saw him, he was like, 'Momma, I got cold. I slept in the woods last night. The puppies kept me warm.' He told me that ... the dogs slept up against him. And I'm sure the body heat kept him warm," said his mother, Sarah Ingram.

Billie Jo Roach, another member of the search party that found the boy, said the puppies refused to leave his side.

As the child was placed in an ambulance to be taken to a local hospital for examination, "The puppies were watching where he went.

"Where he went, they went," Roach said.

As word went out that the child was alive and well, family members cheered and cried for joy.

"Praise the Lord! Welcome home, Jaylynn!" yelled his aunt, Amy Zimmerman.

Close to 300 people from North Carolina and Virginia joined in the search to find Jaylynn.

"I love you! God bless you," Ingram told the rescue teams.

"I think I just said, 'Thank you Lord' ... for us to have another chance!" said the child's father.

The boy spent Saturday night under observation at Halifax Regional Hospital and chowed down on a double cheeseburger, a hot dog, strawberry ice cream and French fries.

Meanwhile, the furry heroes, their tails wagging, were rewarded with food.

"I definitely call this a miracle," said Noblin.
