Sherburne and Wright County officials are actively searching the Mississippi River for a missing 52-year-old Elk River man, whom they believe fell through the ice.
Steve Hanson's family first reported him missing on Thursday. Soon after, police in Elk River found his car in a park near Highway 10 and 169.
They then launched a search for Hanson at 11 a.m. Friday. Sherburne County and Wright County Boat and Water Patrol agencies began searching for Hanson on land and the near the banks of the river, but found a hole in the ice.
"The K9's tracked from the car, where it was parked, down to the river. The dog indicated the person probably walked out onto the ice and into the water,"
Officials sent divers into the river. After two hours and no clues, authorities resorted to using a hovercraft.
The search has proved extremely dangerous and difficult. A deputy was thrown from the hovercraft when the vehicle hit a patch of ice.
Anyone who may have seen him is asked to contact the Elk River Police Department at (612) 558-7963.

Police search Mississippi River, park for missing man
Updated: 44 mins ago
ELK RIVER, Minn. -- Authorities are searching the Mississippi River and Babcock Memorial Park along Highway 10 near Elk River for a missing 52-year-old man.
Steven Hanson's wife reported him missing Thursday. Authorities believe Hanson was despondent over work and financial issues.
Hanson failed to show up to work in Plymouth on Thursday. He apparently made a phone call to his bank.
Hanson's car was found in the parking lot of Babcock Memorial Park. Authorities say there are footprints leading from Hanson's car to the river.
Crews searched the park on foot while authorities searched the water using a hovercraft. During the search, the hovercraft hit an ice chunk, throwing a Sherburne County Sheriff's deputy into the water. The deputy was rescued, however, the hovercraft's air bladder was ruptured.
Authorities say the river is freezing over quickly, which will prevent them from further water searcher.
The Elk River Police Chief says officers will keep watch on the area during the next few days, but no official searches are planned.

Search continues for missing Elk River man
By ABBY SIMONS, Star Tribune
Last update: December 6, 2008 - 11:58 AM
Authorities are continuing their search today for an Elk River man who disappeared late this week after abandoning his car at a park near the Mississippi River.
Steve Hanson, 52, was last seen by his wife, Paulette, Thursday morning as the two ate breakfast and he prepared to go to work. As the day dragged on, she hadn't heard from him and became worried, contacting authorities.
Police discovered Hanson's car at about 3 a.m. Friday parked at Babcock Park near the intersection of highways 10 and 101 in Elk River. It was locked, with his personal belongings inside including his cellular phone and laptop computer. A set of footprints and a tracking dog led authorities to the river, where an extensive search including divers, a hovercraft and helicopter was launched Friday. Dangerous conditions Friday night led them to suspend the search until this morning, where they continued.
Paulette Hanson said her husband has a history of depression, and but last showed symptoms 12 to 15 years ago. "This took us all by surprise," she said. "We are very aware of the possible risk to do self-harm, but that's not to say something else could have happened."
Steve and Paulette Hanson are the parents of three grown children. The family has been posting fliers in the area.
"If this is a potential self-harm thing, we just want him to know that we love him and just want him to come home." she said.
Anyone with information on Hanson's whereabouts is asked to contact the Elk River Police Department at (763) 241-2500.

Authorities continued searching Saturday for an Elk River man who disappeared after abandoning his car at a park near the Mississippi River.

Police discovered Hanson's car at about 3 a.m. Friday parked at Babcock Park near the intersection of highways 10 and 101 in Elk River. It was locked, with his personal belongings inside including his gloves, a cell phone and laptop computer. A set of footprints and a tracking dog led authorities to the river, where an extensive search that included divers, a hovercraft and helicopter was launched Friday. Dangerous conditions Friday night led them to suspend the search until Saturday morning. Ice had punctured the hovercraft on Friday, sending a deputy into the water for a brief period before he was rescued.
Elk River police chief Jeff Beahen said Saturday the conditions are too dangerous to continue an all-out search on the water, but that authorities are monitoring the riverbanks.
Paulette Hanson said her husband has a history of depression, and but last showed symptoms 12 to 15 years ago. "This took us all by surprise," she said. "We are very aware of the possible risk to do self-harm, but that's not to say something else could have happened."

ELK RIVER – Sherburne and Wright County officials are searching for a man who may have fallen through the Mississippi River ice.
Steve Hanson, 52, from Elk River was reported missing on Thursday. Soon after, Elk River Police found his car and personal belongings at a park near Highway 10 and 169. A Big Lake canine traced the scent from the car to the banks of the nearby Mississippi River.
Sherburne County and Wright County Boat and Water Patrol began searching for Hanson Friday morning. They searched near the banks of the river but found no hole in the ice.
After a Wright County Deputy had to be rescued from the water when his hovercraft deflated on a patch of ice, the search was called off due to hazardous conditions shortly after 4 p.m. on Friday afternoon.

This does not sound good. If he was on his way to work I wonder why he stopped at the river. I hope they find him soon.

Police search for missing Elk River man
Monday, 08 December 2008
Authorities are still looking for an Elk River man who disappeared on Dec. 4.
Steve Hanson, 52, was last seen by his wife, Paulette, on Thursday morning as the couple ate breakfast. The two were planning for a trip to Florida on Friday.
According to the missing person report, Paulette and Steve normally talked several times during the day. At 9:22 p.m., after not hearing from him, she filed a report.
The couple’s son also drove to Hanson’s job in Plymouth and didn’t see his father’s car. He also talked with second shift employees who said they hadn’t seen him. They also paged him, but did not receive a call back.
Police Chief Jeff Beahen confirmed Hanson did not show for work Thursday or Friday.
Shortly afterwards the original missing person report, at 11:50 p.m., police located Hanson’s 2003 Chevrolet Malibu abandoned at Babcock Park near the intersection of highways 10 and 101.
The vehicle was locked with Hanson’s personal belongings still inside.
Police Chief Jeff Beahen said on Thursday night a police K9 led authorities from the car toward the banks of the Mississippi River under the bridge.
On Friday, three more dogs came and led authorities to the same spot, Beahen said.
An extensive search began, which included divers, a helicopter and hovercraft, but Hanson was never found.
Beahen said during the search on Friday afternoon, ice punctured the hovercraft sending a Wright County deputy into the water.
The deputy was rescued, however, the extensive water search needed to be called off until water conditions improve.
The area of ice where the K9s indicated was also broken, Beahen said, but nothing was found. For now police are still monitoring the area.
Beahen said 12 to 15 years ago Hanson, who has a history of depression, had gone missing for several days, but came back.

I believe I had the report of this 'body find' and searched w/ Steve's name under missing adults and nothing came up. I have since deleted the report. If I come across it again, I will post it.
