I'll have to look for this movie and watch. No, I do not remember this case. Goodness, hope she is dead by now and has gone on to meet her maker for her final judgment.

I read about this case a couple of years ago. It was such a disturbing case. It gave me nightmares for awhile. The things that poor dear was put through was just plain awful. I agree there is not enough time for justice to be served on this one.

Well folks.......I rented the movie tonight since Little Rockford is at the hockey game.
Umm.......all I can say right now is that I am speechless. What that poor girl did to ever deserve something like that...sometimes I have to wonder where is my savior? Where was this poor girl's savior? IMO, the parents are to blame as well.

If I heard right, the parents gave up Jenny at the end, didn't they? Said she moved in with somebody......
If that part was true, where the girls call their parents from a pay phone, and their mother asks if everything is fine, and they reply that the money was late, and you KNOW you mailed the money, wouldn't you hop the first bus back and check on your children? For pity sake, this was in the 1960's, and even though times were very tough when I was a child, I never heard of anyone just dumping their children with strangers! :madranting94dp:

I know I dont get leaving your children apparently according to the docs the mother was in jail when the kids were left there and there were also two older siblings like I said before there is so much more in all the documents about both families when you get time you will have to google and check them out scary stuff :71526:

In the beginning of the movie, it is shown that everything was from trial transcripts. :0009:
But the parents are shown as being in a carnival and just left with this monster for just a little while. :francis:
I have to be in a different 'mood' to read over that horrendous crime and tonight ain't the night. Thanks though.

Holy Cow! This woman was the sickest person ever to walk the earth. I just saw this movie about 2 months ago and cried so hard for Sylvia. I agree..you must watch it if you haven't seen it but beware, it'll rip your heart right outta your chest. Keep the tissues close at hand as well!
Also looked the story up online and theres more to it than is in the movie.

Honestly a horrible case, one that is hard to read, but speaks loudly of how laws have changed, and how far we have come, and still need to go

From the link:
An American Crime is a 2007 crime-drama film based on the true story of the torture and murder of Sylvia Likens by Indianapolis housewife Gertrude Baniszewski. It premiered at the 2007 Sundance Film Festival to controversy amongst the critics, most of whom, nonetheless, lauded the daring performances of Catherine Keener and Ellen Page.[1] Because of internal problems with the film's original distributor, First Look, the film was headed to the straight-to-DVD market, but Showtime stepped in and officially premiered the film on May 10, 2008.[2] The film was nominated for a Golden Globe, an Emmy (both for Catherine Keener's performance) and a Writer's Guild Award.

I saw the movie. It was very graphic, and because of that portrayed the torture in such a realistic light.

I don't think I can watch it, I read the case over at Crime Library, and just reading what was done, was hard enough, watching it, I don't think I can handle it.
Funny isn't it, in a weird way? I have seen Texas Chainsaw Massacre (all of them) and while it is graphic, I can handle it....but just reading this case, left me physically ill.

Always harder when you know its a true story. I watched it and cryed so freakin hard for Sylvia....this woman was a true monster and "God forgive me" I'm glad she died and I hope it was a painful slow death.

who imprisons and tortures Sylvia likens in the basement of her home in Indiana in 1965 I recall the play about the incident, Hey Rube!, written by "Janet" McReynolds, the spouse of Bill McReynolds a retired professor who very occasionally played Santa Claus but very often sought to be interviewed about his playing Santa Claus.

That wasn't the same Bill McReynolds who was connected to the John Benet Ramsey case was it?
I just remember his wife writing a play about a little girl that got murdered in the basement on Christmas Day. I believe she wrote it a few years before JBR was murdered.
It may not be the same Santa.
imo

Yes, it was.
>I remember his wife writing a play ... a few years before JBR was murdered.
Several years earlier. The play was Hey Rube! Some case followers were struck by the "go take a nice warm bath" instruction after the girl revealed being raped.
>It may not be the same Santa.
It is the same one, though as I noted, he seemed to have spent more time being interviewed about playing Santa than actually playing Santa. And the videographer made it quite clear that he was going Christmas shopping and would not be appearing at the Ramsey home on the night of the party that Bill "Santa" McReynolds had inveigled Patsy Ramsey to arrange. There was never any chance that Charles Kuralt would show up and never any chance that the videographer team would show up at the Ramseys home as McReynolds had claimed.
