Authorities combed the Cannon Falls area Monday in hopes of finding a teenage boy who disappeared from his home.
The search for Nick Hoffman, 15, was temporarily called off Monday evening and expected to resume this morning, Cannon Falls police Chief Jeff McCormick said.
The Cannon Falls boy was last seen around 11 p.m. Sunday at his home in a residential area on the city's west side near Highway 19. He was discovered missing at about 6 a.m. Monday.
Hoffman disappeared without evidence of having taken any warm clothing — a concern that kept search crews under a heightened sense of urgency, McCormick said. Hoffman apparently took a blanket and a pillow from his bed.
Hoffman's disappearance came just as a winter storm was bearing down on the area. Snowfall accumulations of 3 to 7 inches were predicted.
"We're incredibly concerned with his safety," McCormick said.
There did not appear to be forced entry made into the locked Hoffman residence, police said. It is unclear whether Hoffman walked away, met someone or was picked up.
McCormick said it was unclear whether foul play may be involved.
"At this point, we just don't know," he said. "We're looking at all the options."
There were no indications Hoffman was distraught or had a problematic home life, he said.
"We're talking about your typical kid," McCormick said.
Interviews were being conducted with friends and classmates. State investigators were conducting a computer search for any suspicious activity, McCormick said.
Cannon Falls police were joined by members of Cannon Falls fire department and ambulance, Goodhue County sheriff's deputies and Dakota County sheriff's deputies. K-9 units were also deployed in Monday's search.
"Obviously, our full resources are being put forward to try to locate Nick," McCormick said.
Searchers began house-by-house, McCormick said, then fanned out to cover wooded and rural areas. Searchers ended the night closer to the Hoffman residence in hopes of speaking with possible witnesses who had been gone during the day.
The search was expected to resume today with a mounted posse and volunteers joining the search party. McCormick said anyone interested in volunteering should first call the police department in the morning at (507) 263-2278.
