Suffolk police searching for missing man

December 8, 2008

Suffolk Police are looking for Corey Eugene Lynch, a 50-year-old man who disappeared from his home on Desert Road late Sunday night and has not been seen since, said city spokeswoman Debbie George.

Lynch was wearing a black leather jacket with a large eagle on the back, tan pants and boots when he left the house in the 4300 block of Dessert Road at 11 p.m., potentially to go for a walk, George said. She said that Lynch’s family started looking for him about 1 a.m. but were unsuccessful. They called police at 9:30 this morning.

George said that Lynch has no physical or mental health issues that might have played an issue in his failure to return home Sunday night. Desert Road is located in the southwestern section of the city, not far from the North Carolina state line.

Anyone with information should contact the Suffolk Police at 757-923-2350 and press 0.

Suffolk police and emergency responders are searching an area near Desert Road for a man missing since about 11 p.m. Sunday night.

Suffolk spokesperson Debbie George said Monday that Corey Eugene Lynch, 50, of the 4300 block of Desert Road, had not been seen or heard from since he left his house for a walk late Sunday night.

Lynch was wearing a black leather jacket with a large eagle on the back, along with tan pants and boots when he was last seen.

Fire and rescue personnel joined police and a search-and-rescue dog at the scene Monday morning, and by 2:30 p.m., they had been unable to find the man, and city officials released a photo, asking for the public’s help in locating him.

They also distributed a description and a call for help to drivers of school buses and other city vehicles in hopes that someone would see him during their afternoon travels.

Anyone with pertinent information is asked to call the Suffolk Police at 923-2350 and press 0.

SUFFOLK -- Police are searching for a missing 50-year-old man who went for a late night walk and never returned home.

The man left his home on Desert Rd. yesterday evening around 11pm to go for a walk. When he did not return by 1:00 a.m., his family became worried.

Around 9:30 Monday morning, Suffolk crews went out to the scene to search for the missing man. About 30 personnel were searching by Monday afternoon. Suffolk police have requested help from the Virginia Beach police helicopter and VDEM canines.

The family told police that the man has no history of health problems.

His home is in a remote location near the Great Dismal Swamp, and family members and police are concerned that he was either hurt or became hill during his walk.

Missing man found near home
By R.E. Spears (Contact) | Suffolk News-Herald

A man who had been missing from his Desert Road home since he left for a walk around 11 p.m. Sunday was found early Tuesday afternoon, sitting on a log in the woods nearby.

A volunteer canine search team found 50-year-old Corey Eugene Lynch about a half-mile deep into the woods near his house, in an area that had been searched multiple times by dogs and other rescue workers, according to Suffolk spokesperson Debbie George.

Lynch, a resident of the 4300 block of Desert Road, “suffered no apparent injuries or ill effects from his time in the woods,” George said on Tuesday. He refused medical treatment from his rescuers.

George said that Lynch told emergency officials he had become disoriented after leaving his house Sunday night and that he had covered himself in leaves and spent the next two nights “wait(ing) it out” in the woods.

His family initially searched for him and then called police early on Monday to report his disappearance.

Suffolk’s search and rescue team then moved into action. By 1:30 a.m. Tuesday, when it was temporarily halted, the search effort had expanded to include 100 searchers, four helicopters, infrared imaging systems and several paid and volunteer canine/handler teams “from all across Virginia,” George said.

The search began again at 8 a.m. on Tuesday. Lynch was found just before 1 p.m., George said.

“The response was just tremendous,” she said. “It was a sight to behold.”

Suffolk’s search-and-rescue team, in particular, deserved praise for its work, she said.

“The search-and-rescue team is phenomenal. The dedication they put in whenever there is an incident like this is something to see.”
