The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office on Thursday confirmed that two skulls found earlier in the week in a wooded area by a Northwest Side apartment complex are human remains.

Both skulls were discovered Sunday evening in the 8900 block of North Loop 1604 West, police said.

Two joggers running through the wooded area by the apartment complex found one skull on top of a black sheet, a police report said. A medical examiner's investigator found the other skull after police processed the scene, the report said.

The remains are still unidentified and will require DNA testing to positively identify, a process that could take months, officials said.

A cause of death is also pending.

Skeletal remains identified

Authorities have identified skeletal remains found Oct. 21 inside a North Side condominium as belonging to Brenda Gilbert and her son, Fabian.

Police suspected Gilbert, 46, and the 10-year-old boy had died inside the home months before a painter discovered their bodies after smelling a foul odor in the 17100 block of Vardon Way.

The Bexar County Medical Examiner’s Office on Monday alerted Gilbert’s family in Opelousas, La., that DNA tests were 98 to 99 percent conclusive that genetic material from the skeletal remains matched their relatives’ DNA.

“The cause and manner of death are still pending, but we have confirmed their identities,” said Jimmy Holguin, chief investigator for the medical examiner.

Authorities are awaiting toxicology results to determine how the pair died — a task that investigators said would be challenging because decomposition reduced the bodies to bones.

Family members said they lost touch with Gilbert and Fabian about three years ago, when she moved to Lafayette without giving a reason.

“She shut herself off from her family,” said Gilbert’s sister-in-law, Chasidy Gilbert.

Brenda Gilbert left behind two grown children in their early 20s. The siblings were devastated to learn of their mother’s and brother’s mysterious deaths, relatives said.

“It has really affected them,” said Erica Stelly, Brenda Gilbert’s niece. “They had been looking for her for so long.”

The family is trying to raise money to ship their remains back to Opelousas, a city of about 23,000 between Lake Charles and Baton Rouge.

Brenda Gilbert’s relatives and neighbors said she and her young son moved from Lafayette to San Antonio after Hurricane Katrina. The storm did not displace her, but she considered herself a “refugee” because she was evicted from her Lafayette residence, neighbors said.

In 2006, she was placed in a rent-free San Antonio condominium through a temporary program Fannie Mae offered to hurricane victims. Soon after her arrival, neighbors said, it became apparent that the new resident was a deeply religious but disturbed person.

Police were called to numerous disturbances involving Brenda Gilbert at her upscale condominium near Blanco Road and Loop 1604. She told police that cult members and demons had been trying to force her out of the home.

The mother and son had not been seen for months before a painter working outside a condominium found their skeletal remains after he looked through a second-floor window. Police said the condominium was empty except for the remains, pillows, blankets and strange religious writings posted on windows.

Relatives said the Brenda Gilbert they knew was not the person neighbors and police reports described.

“Brenda was the nicest person; she was loving and giving,” Chasidy Gilbert said.

Relatives said her religious beliefs seemed to affect her behavior after she began attending a small church in her neighborhood.

“I’m not sure if that’s what started the change or if it was the people she was around,” Stelly said.

I'm confused. The mother and son that were ID'd were found on Oct. 21st and the skulls in the first post were found in Dec.?

Packy, I think the skulls are from other victims. The Gilberts were found with complete bone skeletons.
