An anonymous tip has helped end the search for one of the region’s most wanted men. Jerry Wayne Dunn was wanted by the State of Tennessee for violation of the Tennessee Sex Offender Registry and other charges. On October 20, 1995, Dunn was convicted of raping a boy younger than 13 years old. After he was released from his eight-year prison sentence, he was registered as a violent sexual offender. Dunn is also accused of contributing to the delinquency of a minor. Deputies say he’s held a missing boy since August of 2005. The boy was entered on N.C.I.C. (The National Crime Information Center) as a missing person.

On Wednesday, a tipster alerted Johnson County deputies that Dunn had been arrested in Slidell, Louisiana. Dunn was using the name “Ricky Ray Hicks.“ Hick’s listed birth date was identical to Dunn’s. Johnson County deputies had their counterparts in Louisiana compare photographs, and the identity was confirmed. But Slidell Police discovered that Dunn was already on his way back to Tennessee with the boy. Johnson County Deputies tracked Dunn through his former employer in Louisiana. On Friday night, they arrested him at a home Forge Creek Road in Mountain City.

The website for “America’s Most Wanted” says Dunn tried to kill himself by slitting his wrists in prison. He will face charges once he has recovered. According to “America’s Most Wanted,“ the boy told investigators that he couldn’t contact his family because Dunn always kept a close watch on him. Detectives say Dunn has been in illegal contact with his victim since 2005. News Channel 11’s Darius Radzius is following this story for 11pm tonight.

A teen missing for more than three years has been found and a registered as a sex offender is arrested Monday night.

Jerry Wayne Dunn is at the Johnson City Medical Center being treated for cuts to his wrist he tried to commit suicide in his cell on Sunday.

The teen is in the juvenile detention center awaiting a court hearing Tuesday morning for his previous runaway charge. Other than that, the sheriff says he seemed to be taken care of well, but he’s certain he’ll need counseling.

“I’ve just been awfully worried about him and I didn’t know what had ever happened to him,“ said Lena Greer, missing teen’s grandmother.
For three years, a Mountain City teen was missing since age 14. He was believed to be with Dunn, who’s registered on the Tennessee Sex Offender registry after his conviction for the rape of a child under the age of 13.

The search was extensive including family, sheriff’s deputies, and then featured on America’s Most Wanted.

“Some people called me and said they had seen him,“ said Greer.
Nothing panned out until December third.

“The person approached me and asked me if we’re still looking for Jerry Dunn and I told him yes,“ said Johnson County Sheriff Mike Reece.
Sheriff Reece was told to look in Louisiana because he may have been arrested there under a different name—Ricky Ray Hicks. He sent a message to all the sheriff’s offices.

“Within five minutes we got a response,“ said Sheriff Reece.
Dunn was arrested in Slidell, Louisiana on traffic charges. He had left Louisiana since and returned to Johnson County.

“He had made contact with his employer down there and wanted money wired to him in Johnson County,“ said Sheriff Reece.
While Dunn was coordinating the receipt of his cash, investigators obtained a search warrant and put a team together of deputies, drug task force, and wildlife resource officers.

“We had enough people where we wanted to make sure he didn’t get away,“ said Sheriff Reece.
Sheriff’s deputies tracked down Dunn and the teen here at a house where they were visiting the real Ricky Ray Hicks and his son. Police moved in quickly and took Dunn and the boy into custody.
“I was really glad that they found him and got that old Jerry,“ said Greer.
Deputies took the teen to the juvenile detention center on a previous runaway charge and have yet to see his family. His grandmother hopes it won’t be too much longer.

“Give him a big hug and kiss him and tell him how much we’re glad that he was found,“ said Greer.

Dunn was convicted and sentenced to eight years in prison in 1997 for the rape of another child under the age of 13 and has been registered as a violent sex offender. Since 2005, Dunn was wanted for a sex offender registry violation.

The justice department reports more than 700- thousand children are reported missing in a year’s time…

NCMEC only lists two teens missing from TN within the past three years, so whoever he is, info must have been removed.

Roamer, What a christmas present for the teen's family.

3 years must have felt like forever.

Hopefully this child can get therapy.

I wouldn't have been particularly upset if they hadn't managed to save this POS!

Very few people manage to kill themselves by slitting their wrists, IMO. No major arteries.

It's usually just a cry for help. In this case, I think he was just looking for sympathy or trying to stay out of jail for awhile.

Hi London Lass,

Yes, pity he didn't succeed. IMO it wasn't a real attempt, just a sad attempt at garnering sympathy for his sick actions.

Lovely to finally meet you. :11_2_104:

This is a great Christmas present for the family of the teen although it's going to be a rough road for the poor child. Bless his heart. I'm glad he is alive and can go home now.

From the article above, isn't this so sad.

Man featured on ‘America’s Most Wanted’ caught in Johnson Co.

Published December 10th, 2008

MOUNTAIN CITY — A man who was featured on the “America’s Most Wanted” television program has been captured by the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department and a juvenile who has been missing for three years has been found.
Jerry Wayne Dunn, 37, was arrested Friday on charges of absconding as a sex offender and cruelty to animals. Dunn had previously served a prison sentence for rape of a child.
Sheriff Mike Reece said he will also seek to indict Dunn on kidnapping charges. Reece said the missing 14-year-old boy was with Dunn when he was arrested. The boy is being held in juvenile detention on runaway charges.
Dunn was being held at Johnson City Medical Center on Tuesday after undergoing treatment for slashing his wrist while he was being held at the Johnson County Jail. Reece said Dunn was in good condition after doctors repaired the injury and the sheriff is seeking to return Dunn to Johnson County.
Although Dunn has been on the “America’s Most Wanted” television program, Reece said the break in the case came last week when his department received a tip on Wednesday that Dunn had been arrested in Louisiana.
Acting on the tip, the sheriff’s department sent out a bulletin to all Louisiana law enforcement agencies asking for information.
A response quickly came in that a man meeting Dunn’s description had been arrested, but the man arrested had a different name.
“We sent photos of Dunn and they determined it was the same man,” Reece said.
Dunn had been arrested in October, but was now free. Police checked with Dunn’s employer in Louisiana and learned he had left the state.
The police got a break because Dunn had called the company from Tennessee, asking that his last paycheck be wired to him. Cooperating with the police department, the employer told Dunn he must provide his current address in order for the money to be wired. Dunn gave the employer his address, which was relayed to the Johnson County Sheriff’s Department.
“When we checked the address, we found out the man who lived there had the same name as the one Dunn had used when he was in jail in Louisiana,” Reece said. “We executed the search warrant on Friday.”
Officers from the First Judicial District Drug Task Force and the Tennessee Wildlife Resources Agency assisted the sheriff’s department deputies in the arrest.
Dunn and the boy were found at the residence and both taken into custody. Reece said the man who was providing them shelter was not pleased when he learned Dunn had used his name when he was jailed in Louisiana.
Dunn had previously been convicted in 1995 of rape of a child. He served eight years in prison. He was also given a lifetime entry on the sex offender registry. Shortly after his release from prison, he came into contact with the then-11-year-old boy who was found on Friday.
Reece said the boy ran away with Dunn in 2005. The boy was found several days later at a campsite just across the Tennessee line in North Carolina. Reece said the boy was returned to his family, but ran away again just a half hour after his return.
Reece said the boy’s physical appearance was good when he was found on Friday. “I am no psychologist, but I am sure he is going to have mental issues from this,” the sheriff said.

That's so young 11 years old.
