NEW BEDFORD, Mass. -- The New Bedford Police Department asked for the public's help Tuesday in its search for a missing New Bedford elementary school teacher.

Sheryl Grace Duncan, 38, of New Bedford, was last seen Monday driving her 2007 Chrysler Pacifica, navy blue in color, bearing Massachusetts registration 227VRD.

Duncan is a wife and mother of two young children. Police said she is a well-known teacher and “left without warning or provocation.”

Police said Duncan's name has been entered into a national law enforcement database as being "wanted as a missing person." Duncan has "ties that span throughout New England, into Maryland and as far as San Antonio, Texas," police said.

They asked anyone with information to contact New Bedford Police.

New Bedford police are making a desperate plea to the public to help them find a 38-year-old school teacher and mom of two who dropped her kids off at day care on Monday, called out sick from work and hasn’t been seen since.

The day she disappeared Sheryl Grace Duncan withdrew $400 from an ATM and presumably drove away in her navy blue 2007 Chrysler Pacifica with a Massachusetts license plate 227VRD. She was last seen dropping off her boys, aged 2 and 3, at day care at 7:45 a.m. Monday, said New Bedford Police Lt. Jeffrey Silva.

“It’s very puzzling,” Silva said.

Silva described Duncan as a beloved community member whose mother is a retired New Bedford cop. Silva went to high school with Duncan, whom he described as “happy go-lucky” in school. Most of her family lives the South Coast, he said.

Duncan left without warning or provocation Silva said, which has frustrated investigators.

“She seems to have a very loving husband and two beautiful children,” he said.

Silva said it’s unlikely Duncan was kidnapped or fleeing abuse. But police have pieced together a portrait of a woman who was probably feeling in over her head.

“We know this time of year is overwhelming for lots of people,” Silva said. “We thought when she called out sick it seemed nobody really thought it was a bigger issue. Now when it turns into a couple days and no contact, that’s alarming.”

Police have contacted people Duncan knows in Maryland, throughout New England and in Texas, as well as through online social networking sites. So far, no one has heard from her, he said.

“The more time that goes by the more concerned we get,” he said.

Duncan is a special education teacher at the DeValles Elementary School in New Bedford, according to a September school committee agenda.

A message left at the school this morning was not immediately returned.

New Bedford police are asking that anyone who has had contact with Duncan or knows of her whereabouts to contact police.

:g: That's odd. It doesn't seem like she would be the type to just runaway. I hope she is found soon.

I pray this doesn't turn into another of those where down the road we learn of spousal involvement in the disappearance.

I agree Gabby but like the article said...this time of year pushes some people to their limits and completely overwhelms their worlds. I really hope shes o.k. and realized that her family needs her right now.

I'm glad she is safe. That's an awful lot to put her family, especially those little kids, through. On these "found" updates I wish they would get the "why" answered.
