Tulsa County, OK - A person looking for arrowheads along the Arkansas River discovered what appears to be a human skull, the Tulsa County Sheriff's Office said Saturday.

A Sheriff's Office spokeswoman says the discovery was made around 3:30 p.m. Saturday afternoon near the 16200 block of W. Wekiwa Rd. just west of Sand Springs.

More bones were found in the general vicinity about 10 to 12 yards from the skull, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Darkness prevented investigators from doing a complete search, so they secured the area and were set to resume on Sunday morning. A medical examiner is also headed to the scene to analyze the remains and try to determine a cause of death.

Authorities recovered a human skull Saturday afternoon in far western Tulsa County.

Tulsa County sheriff’s deputies were dispatched to 16200 West Wekiwa Road, west of Sand Springs, about 3 p.m. after a person who had been walking along the Arkansas River searching for arrowheads discovered the skull and called the authorities, Sheriff’s Capt. John Bowman said.

Bowman said the skull, which was missing its jaw, could belong to an adult male who went missing within a mile of the area last year.

“It’s obviously been here a long time,” Bowman said.

Five detectives and two deputies were investigating late Saturday, Bowman said.

Detectives continued searching Sunday for human bones, after someone discovered a skull along the Arkansas River.

The Tulsa County Sheriff's office recovered the skull and a few other bones Saturday about three miles west of Sands Springs.

Engineers stopped releasing water from Keystone Dam so deputies could search for more remains.

Gary Pagett made the chilling discovery while hunting for arrowheads.

"It's kind of a surreal feeling when you're looking eye to eye with another former human being," said Pagett.

Pagett saw the skull while walking along a brush covered part of the bank. Volunteers had to clear the shrubs away so detectives could dig through the dirt.

"Anytime you find a human body, and you don't know what the circumstances are, we always work it as if it's a homicide," said Capt. John Bowman. "You can never go back and rework the scene."

A medical examiner is using dental records to identify the remains.

Investigators are wondering if the remains are those of a missing man, who was last seen more than a year ago. Deputies searched the same area by boat in July 2007.

The sheriff's office is not releasing his name until the medical examiner has more information.

Sand Springs is just 25 miles from Tulsa. Many are missing near the area...Angie Tucker, Jackie Nava, Ray Johnson and more. Could even be someone from Arkansas/Kansas/Tenn/Missouri, omg the list is endless. ..... need more info. I am impatient.

More clues in found skull case

Last Update: 12/16 4:14 am
The medical examiner has more clues to identify a skull and bones found over the weekend. The remains were found Saturday by a man looking for arrowheads about three miles west of Sand Springs along the Arkansas River.
Investigators said one of the leg bones had a metal rod in it. The person reported missing about a year ago, from that area, also had a rod in his leg.
The medical examiner is contacting the family to see if the serial number on the missing man's metal rod matches the one found in the leg bone.

The missing person that they have linked to the skull, is my husbands cousin. Yes, it is heartbreaking & they did not find it sooner b/c the river was up.I wonder how many smart mouth remarks ppl would make if it were a member of their own family that turned up missing?
If the public knew details about how & why he came up missing then having multiple detectives might make more sense to them.
Just wish people would think before they type. His mom reads these postings too.

What is taking so long in identifing the remains of this young man? A metal rod was discovered at the scene and it seems as easy as comparing the serial numbers with the numbers at the hospitals. Considering the man that went missing in that area more than a year ago who also had a metal rod in his leg it seems like a no-brainer.

OK.....another topix post by Megan1112
My mom knows his mother. I know the details and it is a terrible thing the family has been going through. Having questions about a death never help, but it's good to have closure. Prayers go out to the family, sorry for your loss.
