I was looking at the Duncraft catalog and they sell an imitation log that has holes in it. You fill the holes with peanut butter for the birdies/squirrels.

I decided to make my own. I took a log from my wood pile, screwed a big hook in the top and then drilled holes thru the log. It hangs from a regular birdfeeder hook on the side of my house.

I picked a log that had a "Y" branch, so the birds would have a perch.

After I fill the holes with peanut butter, I smear peanut butter up and down the log, then sprinkle bird seed on it.

The birds LOVE it - especially the woodpeckers!

I made my suet logs from logs from my firewood pile, too. I also screwed a big hook in the top, and I drilled a bunch of large (walnut size) holes in the log. I always use coat hanger wire to hang my suet logs on sturdy tree branches. Coat hanger wire is extremely strong and holds up year after year.

My suet logs are covered with bark, and after I stuff suet inside the holes, I always slather more suet up and down the bark, and sprinkle with seeds.

Cardinals, woodpeckers, flickers, tufted titmouse, and chickadees are my main feeders. I also keep finch socks for the finches.

Simply rubbing peanut butter and seeds is a great idea, too!

Bumping this thread back over to page 1.

I love this idea of making a peanut butter and seed log for the birds. Going to try this tomorrow. Thanks for sharing. I will let you know if any of my backyard birds like the log.

We have House Finches, Yellow Finches, Robins, Red Birds and Chickadee's abundant this year.
DH bought a new bird bath last week and the birds love it. :0012:

Great idea! I am going to try it too....

my birdfeeders have been overrun by the mean birds lately...

it's like the fight club. mostly i have blackbirds and redwing blackbirds, blue jays and cardinals...none of the finches or wrens.

a robin built a nest in the rain gutter of my house. last night dh and I saw her attack a blackbird on the suet feeder! it was a good distance from her nest so i don't think that was it. the oddest thing..

I wish I could have a bird bath or a feeder. I'm afraid it would become a buffet for my cats though. Any of you have indoor/outdoor cats? What do you do about them & the birds?

My cats are all indoor cats, so it's not a worry.

What is a worry, tho, is the neighbor's cat! He stalks my birds and sits directly under nests & feeders. Drives me crazy.

I recently moved the feeders and bird bath to the fenced backyard. The birds aren't afraid of the dogs and the dogs don't bother them.

My neighbor's cat wouldn't dream of coming over our fence, so we're all happy now.

I can't do anything about the nests, tho. That cat still gets some of the baby birdies. :cryintime:

This time of year, I keep mine in as much as they will tolerate. Can't stand to lose a baby bird! I suppose I'll never be able to feed the birds, not as long as Abigail is around. She's a hunting machine.... :girl_sad:
