BURGETTSTOWN, Pa. - DNA samples may solve the question behind the identity of skeletal remains found behind Burgettstown Middle/High School on Dec. 19, according to Trooper Joe Christy, Pennsylvania State Police Washington Barracks information officer.

Investigators are checking several missing persons cases in the area, but have identified one case in particular, although details on that case have not been released, since a positive identification has not been made, according to police.

"They are cross-referencing the remains with a number of missing persons," said Christy."We are pretty sure we know who the person is, based on the supporting evidence, the clothing, but we haven't made an exact determination yet."

Family members involved in that case have been contacted and police are trying to obtain a DNA sample. Dental records are not an avenue the investigators are currently pursuing, according to Christy. "I believe that there had been contact made with the family of that person," said Christy.

Christy said that troopers have not ruled out any cause of death at this point, nor were they taking the scene at face value. It will likely take several months to finish processing the DNA samples.

"Getting DNA from skeletonized remains is very difficult," said Christy. "We may have to send it to the FBI lab. We're hopeful we'll be able to make a positive identification."

Human remains found in Smith

BURGETTSTOWN - Hunters stumbled upon a badly decomposed human body Saturday in a wooded area behind Burgettstown Area Middle/High School.

Smith Township and state police were summoned about 2 p.m. after two small game hunters found skeletal remains on state gamelands along Bavington Road.

Township police said there are no missing person cases in the area. The area was secured and will be processed by a state police forensics team, Washington County Deputy Coroner Tim Kegel said.

Rural western Washington County contains thousands of acres of gamelands that are a destination for hunters. But it's not uncommon for the property to turn into a crime scene because of its remoteness, Smith police Chief Winford LaRue said at the scene.

A dog was found hanged by a hunter Oct. 27 in gamelands in East Finley Township.

A Washington man selected gamelands in Donegal Township in September 2005 to commit suicide. Nine years ago, the bodies of two missing students from Franciscan University of Steubenville, Ohio, were found murdered just beyond gamelands near Bavington.

State police have searched gamelands in the Smith area after receiving tips that David Hart of South Franklin Township was buried there after he was last seen in July 1993, when he was 31 years old.

"It's amazing. We never know what we are going to find when we come out here," said Dan Sitler, a wildlife conservation officer for the state Game Commission who went to the Smith site after being notified of the human remains.

I hope they let the public know after they discover the identify. But, the sad thing is they may not make public aware of who it was after DNA results are determined and we'll not know if the match was to one of the missing listed here on HFTM.

I know isn't it frustrating. I spent a lot of time today looking for some UIDs for updates with nothing. Even checked police press releases.

One of the earlier articles said no missing persons reports from the area yet the man who was dropped off must have been reported missing in that area unless I read it wrong.

It does take a long time for some of the DNA to be sent out in some cases.
